Even if newspapers were obliged to push only *actual* news, there's still the issue of who decides what they publish, and the emphasis they place on each story.

The Canary is the Breitbart Of the far left. No sensible person should pay it heed whatsoever.

So it'll be Queef of Peace's favourite website then...

Back in Tory La La Land:

Amber Rudd has offered Windrush folk a fabulous deal that's much better than their current status of being chucked out the country. David Lammy, who my Momentum-inclined friend considers a self-promoter (and who had no reply to my question why Jeremy Corbyn said f*** all for 2 years about this and left it to the "self-promoter" to do the right thing) had a great response:

"Home Secretary, you are mistaken. The Windrush children were British citizens when we invited them here 70 years ago, as a direct result of colonialism and empire. Their British citizenship is theirs by right and is not something that your Govnt is now choosing to ‘offer’ them."

PS the black populations of the West Indies were originally British slaves happily taken over without the right papers and accepted as (inferior) citizens. They were invited over at a time they were British subjects. So Theresa May can go do to herself, along with Amber Green, what they have both done to the Windrush generation.

Exactly zero, I'd say. ;)

Surely, when it was zero already, it couldn't decline any further. :P

It seems that the Tories broke a pairing arrangement* in order to be sure of winning this vote, I won't say they cannot sink any lower because I'm sure they'd prove me wrong.

*Pairing arrangement - when an MP is unable to attend a vote (through illness, being away on parliamentary business or even campaigning in local election, for example) it is standard practice to come to an arrangement with an MP on the other side to stay away as well. It is not a binding agreement, but it is more or less unprecedented (I can't think of a precedent) for a government to break an agreement on such a massive scale.

I only knew about the idea of "pairing" as a result of seeing the fantastic play "This House" (set during the 74-79 parliament), where this concept is key to the plot. I was under the impression that "pairing" was no longer carried out in Westminster, but I guess I was mistaken?

I knew about the concept as a result of witnessing the events portrayed in the play

There have been times when it was meaningless because the government had such a large majority, but it does still exist.

Has this been mentioned here before? If so, I missed it.

I don't think it's been mentioned here, but I certainly recall reading about it. I'd love to know what the combined basic rate of income tax / NI would be if the distinction was removed and the change was revenue-neutral. As it would bring a lot more income within its scope (interest on savings, earned income which currently attracts a very low rate of NI - I can't remember whether it's 1 or 2% -, earned income by people of pensionable age etc.), the combined rate would be a lot lower than just adding the two together. There could also be a further increase in the threshold before any tax is paid. Unfortunately, no party is likely to have the courage even to propose giving the idea some consideration as all attention would focus on the people (largely better-off pensioners) who would lose out.

I agree with the big problem that the Resolution Foundation has defined; that of rapidly increasing generational wealth inequality.

I do not agree with the main solution. Throwing more money at the housing market kind of misses the point - firstly, that we need more (some!) AFFORDABLE housing. That said, there are definitely some issues with inheritance tax that need to be sorted out, but that money shouldn't just be recycled back into the housing market.

Corbyn’s party should be benefiting from anger over executive pay, but it is struggling to capitalise

As Corbyn was a serial rebel against Blair and Brown's governments, he could be said to have been in opposition since he joined the House of Commons in 1983. For someone with so much experience of opposition, he isn't very good at it. He doesn't seem to have any sense of strategy at all.

He's a lazy hypocritical two-faced fake messiah. Labour MP's give him huge potential Tory-strangulations and he continues to say nothing much and do nothing much. Most invisible Leader Of The Opposition in my lifetime because he's frightened of losing his support if he says what he really thinks and wants (eg Brexit). And I LOOK for things political....

It's easy to vote AGAINST things if you don't actually have to come up with policies that deliver, are deliverable, and don't f*** up the economy and everyone involved. Sadly for him he DOES have to and everything he does and says to date shows he's not good at working out contradictions in his approach and in his followers with what he actually wants...

Prob best to just let Kier Starmer rule by default while he sits on the allotment with his raspberries. I promise to tune in to the TV specials!
