Mostly this achievement can be seen as a result of the streaming market becoming bigger because Calvin Harris also debuted at #2 last year with “Blame” - although he did go on to climb to No. 1, something I doubt 1D will do (as they are at time of writing down at 13 on Spotify's chart).

 

As yet nobody has managed to debut at #1 on the streaming chart!

I think a #2 debut is pretty great for them even if they have fallen on Spotify, they've surpassed pretty much everyone's expectations on streaming so whatever the reason for them setting the record, the fact they actually did it is most impressive.
