Apparently Janet's career "died" right after the Super Bowl controversy. That's what I've read anyway - it caused so much outrage across conservative America that she never managed to recover since. It's weird if that was the case since JT was actually the one at fault (if one of them was).

She did ok after that but I don't think it helped  Radio wouldn't touch her for a couple of years anyway, and I think most if not all her music videos were blacklisted by certain channels just because of the Super Bowl shitstorm!

It was so ridiculous. I'm not exactly a big fan of Janet but the reaction to the whole incident was so extreme. It's weird how JT didn't receive any backlash yet Janet did. I know it was her boob and everything but still.

Yes Janet Jackson throughout the late 80's, the 90's and very early 00's, she was a force to be reckoned with, but in 2004 it all fell apart with that superbowl controversy, which wasn't quite fair, seeing as Justin Timberlake went unscathed, she could have carried on her winning streak for much longer and had a few more years at the top. Her Damita Jo album was so underrated and would have been huge if that superbowl thing never happened. Even it's singles would have definitely performed better if they weren't blacklisted by TV and radio stations.

She sort of bounced back with "Call On Me" with Nelly in 2006, but that didn't restore any former glory and plus that 20 Y.O. wasn't very great. I remember watching a documentary about her, and after that incident she kinda lost interest and wasn't very invested in the album, telling her co-writers to write some of the songs themselves, she just lost her edge and that's part of the reason it bombed.

Then there was the "Discipline" album in 2008, which was her last album and first with a new label. But again that didn't take off, she had a minor US hit with "Feedback", but bombed worldwide and the album itself didn't fare any better, and the songs on there just weren't up to scratch, along with this and 20 Y.O. Neither of which showed any progression in sound, just going for that over sexed image and sound, which people were already bored off and just showed that she had given up on herself. Which was such a shame seeing an artist start off with such great material with Control>Rhythm Nation>Janet>The Velvet Rope>All For You>Damita Jo. Then being reduced to the crap of her last 2 albums. Her creativity kinda just went in 2004 and she just stopped trying.

I was so glad when it was announced that she was making a comeback this year, and "No Sleep" sounded very decent and very unlike what's in the charts today, okay she may not get the success she once had, but as long as she can produce some great material and get decent album sales, then she can start restoring her Jackson legacy one step at a time.

I think Feedback only did really well because she somehow got a radio deal, which is odd given radio wouldn't touch her (as a rule) for years  Oh well, the controversy can't take away the impact she had at the height of her fame and all the influence she's had on so many artists since, all the boundaries she pushed <3

Sorry, had a surprise outing sprung on me so I'll spread the rest of the top 20 over the last bit of tonight and tomorrow!

Ciara kicks off the top 20, which is a pleasantly surprising deserved position <3 She always feels so underrated commercially, she's very consistent album wise but hasn't had much success in years (apart from a couple of top 75 singles) :( Given what she's done with no support, it's easy to imagine how big she could be with a bit of support...

Jennifer Lopez has been a fixture in pop for over 15 years and released her latest album in 2014. Her career and commercial success was revived for a while thanks to the biggest hit of her career, 2011's On The Floor, after a bit of a dry period. She's also known for being a mami chulo and slaying women who are 20 years younger than her by being one of the hottest women in pop at 46 years old.

I don't think I'm capable of writing nice things about Avril Lavigne, my distaste for the woman is well documented :P She's been famous from an early age and still acts like she's stuck at the same age... She does have some good songs, to her credit, about 3 or 4, so yay for that x

Nicki Minaj is the nu Queen of rap, which is evident from her being over 50 places higher than Iggy :kink: She effortlessly flits between urban tunes and pop bangers, meaning she has many fans across both genres and within her discography there's pretty much something for everyone.

She hasn't released anything since 2012's Lotus, but Christina Aguilera has a legacy of classics that will always see high in this I imagine. Seemingly diminished by her peer Britney Spears, Xtina just misses the top 15 whereas Britney is figthing to maintain last year's crown. Christina has a powerful voice fit for versatility, meaning she has many fans and I expect virtually everyone likes at least one of her songs.

The second highest artist to have a poshthumous entry on this countdown is Whitney Houston, who sadly died 3 years ago. Throughout the 80s and 90s, she released a horde of classic ballads as well as uptempos, and won huge numbers of fans, with many of her songs going down as classic.

Leona Lewis has majorly flagged commercially with this era, and even fans seem to be liking her stuff less. However, as a talent Leona is up there with the best and that's partly what carried her career for so long. Recent instant grat Another Love Song sees Leona at her best but moving in a new direction, so hopefully things are back on the right track soon.

Adele has been out of the spotlight for a couple of years now, with her last release being 2012's Bond theme Skyfall. It's taking a long while for her to push out 25 because of the birth of her son, but she broke records with 21 and will probably shift a fair few copies when it does come!

Ellie Goulding has had a meteoric rise from shy new British talent to one of the big pop girls! It's astonishing how far she's come, but she deserves it with all her talent. It's rumoured she could be doing the Bond theme, but it seems that her own lead single is coming so that seems unlikely. Either way I'm sure she will slay!

Just missing the top 10 is Aussie pop princess Kylie Minogue. She has a fair sized fanbase on here and had consistent chart success for a good 25 years or so, although she is sadly slowly fading into a fanbase act. She's had Spinning Around to really revive her fledging career in 2000, but can she do it again? Stranger things have happened

I'm actually surprised Leona made it as high as #14. I was looking through the rates and I didn't think she was featured in that many to warrant such a high placing. Unless I've completely missed her, I assume Amy Winehouse is the last posthumous entry to come. Would this be the first time she's charted in the top 10 in this rate since its launch? :o

Even though she has among the most consistent commercial success rate of any recent popstar, Pink is never really placed up there with the big pop girls. It's a shame really, because talent wise and musically Pink is a force to be reckoned with! To be fair though, I myself underrate her often! I never realise how great she is or how much of her stuff I like until I talk about her, hear her etc. and it all comes back to me! She can easily be the angry ex girlfriend but she's at her best, for me, with her tender ballads - particularly the underrated I Don't Believe You <3

MY QUEEN *tries to be somewhat neutral* has bbeen one of the most talked about stars in the world for this past year, between releasing her first fully pop (no country) album 1989, smashing sales records, touring left right and centre and having an ever so slightly publicised feud with Katy Perry (and Spotify, come to think of it!)... Love her or hate her, Taylor is probably the biggest of all the pop girls in the world right now! It's mind boggling to imagine the girl next door crying into her guitar over Drew who I fell in love with in 2009 would go on to become an unstoppable pop force.

*fails to be neutral x*

I don't get how Adele isn't even top10 :o

Cause she is shit.

The Regina George in sheepclothing losing to Katy. It was only right

The highest artist to get a poshthumous placement on this list is Amy Winehouse, who died 4 years ago at the age of just 27. Her second album (and final in her lifetime) Back To Black is one of the biggest selling albums ever in the UK, having shifted a mammoth 3.5 million copies, and garnered her critical success too as well as bags of awards. Sadly, the follow up never materialised, unless you count the patchy poshthumous collection Lioness. Amy was undeniably one of the greatest voices of our generation, effortlessly adding bags of soul and a real jazzy flavour to anything she performed. In her short career, Amy's legacy is wider and greater than many artists who've been around twice or three times as long as her! It's such a shame her god given talent was addled by personal problems and the monster that is addiction :(

Nobody can really deny Madonna is the most iconic female popstar of all time. Since the early 80s, Madonna's touched upon basically every style imaginable in some way or another, and nailed most of them! At her peak, she was pretty much untouchable and those levels of domination haven't really been seen since. From disco to ambience to rave to folk to country to good old pure pop, Madonna has something to please fans of any genre and had more hits than anyone could shake any amount of sticks at. She might be past her former glory, but with her glory she leaves behind a legacy that any artist could only dream of.

Just falling short of the top 5 by a mere two points is Lady Gaga. Known for her outlandish fashion as well as her perfect pop, Stefani Angelina Germanotta has been a big talking point ever since she first hit fame. Her latest album Artpop didn't hold up her commercial standard but she's coming back to slay.... And actually Cheek To Cheek didn't do too badly for a jazz album side project. She might be at her peak right now, but who knows, she could come back around again and slay even harder than ever.

Opening up the top 5 is the queen of pop/rock, who defined the last half of the 00s for me. Breakaway is THE best album of all time and sold over 2 million in the UK - that run of singles *.* She's the only one of this top 5 who's released an album this year, although Piece By Piece is far from her best (still good though)! Like Pink earlier on (to a lesser extent), Kelly has actually had consistent success (albeit much less than Breakaway) for years now but seems to get overlooked by some. As the most successful American Idol winner worldwide by far, Kelly has proven that talent show contestants can last in the music business.
