Posted August 31, 20159 yr The Official Top 50 Biggest Selling Beatles Singles Revealed By Rob Copsey This month marks the 50th anniversary marks the meeting of two rock n roll titans: when Elvis and The Beatles met for the first and only time. To celebrate, BBC Radio 2 has revealed each acts Top 50 best sellers, as compiled by The Official Charts Company. The countdown kicked off with Sara Cox today (August 31) at 6.30am and culminated with the Number 1 songs being revealed during Simon Mayo’s Drivetime show at 7pm. The radio special is immediately followed by BBC2 show When Elvis Met The Beatles; a unique drama about their elusive meeting in Beverly Hills in 1965. At Number 1 on The Beatles' Official Top 50 is, of course, She Loves You. Released in 1963, the track - written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney - logged six non-consecutive weeks at Number 1 is the best selling single of the 1960s in the UK. To date, its sales stand at 1.92 million. Elsewhere in the Top 10, five other songs by the Fab Four have passed the million sales mark: I Want To Hold Your Hand (1.78m), Can't Buy Me Love (1.54m), I Feel Fine (1.42m), Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out (1.41m) and Hey Jude (1.11m). To date, the ballad has sold 1.27 million copies in the UK alone. Elsewhere among the Top 10 hits is A Little Less Conversation at Number 5 (sales of 828,000). The song became a worldwide hit in 2002 including four weeks at the top of the Official Singles Chart when JXL released a remix of the track, originally performed by Elvis for the 1968 film Live A Little, Love A Little. August 31, 20159 yr Beatles Observations. * - Double A Side Releases included digital track sales Does this mean that both sides digital sales are added to the original physical sales? Sgt Pepper's Lonley Hearts Club Band and With A Little Help From My Friends were issued as a single in October 1978 reaching no. 63. Looks like they are not combining digital sales with this physical single as it is listed Nov-10. Looks like they are not adding digital sales of Twist & Shout to the Twist & Shout EP. Surprised at the position of Ain't she sweet (only reached no. 29 with 6 weeks in the chart). If anyone has up-to-date sales for Free as a bird, Real love, Baby it's you and Back in the USSR then we might be able to estimate digital download sales.
August 31, 20159 yr Thought Always on my Mind and Suspicious Minds would be higher on the list. Also one of my personal favs In the Ghetto should be higher :) Way Down being released after his death is in a false position really as his passing clearly boosted the sales. Interesting list though.
August 31, 20159 yr the splitting of Sgt Pepper and Friends is a little odd considering it WAS a single and they merge together on the album pretty much - at least I can't hear the very short Pepper without starting off into Ringo's What would you think... lyrics.... Adding digital sales to EP's is more problematic, usually they were more like album offcuts, though Magical Mystery Tour is different, it's an original work of art and probably should be viewed more as an album, or mini-album, which these days would make the album charts in the absence of physical bits of 45rpm plastic - in which case the individual tracks should count as separate downloads or entire sales of all of them should count as an album sale. It's playing time and track listing is longer than many albums after all....
August 31, 20159 yr EP sales are included because Beatles MMT entered the Record Retailer singles chart (as did Elvis with Jailhouse Rock EP). The separate EP chart had been abolished the week before MMT was released. See the OCC artist singles archive for The Beatles. August 31, 20159 yr Yeah, and the same obviously applies to Elvis: they've only included the Jailhouse Rock EP because that was one of the few that appeared in the (Record Retailer) singles chart. I presume only EPs that showed on the singles chart are in the relevant OCC database. Magical Mystery Tour is only 19 minutes, by the way. I know there are albums shorter than that, but not many.

They should add all the digital sales together for both A and B sides, not just for double A sides. A single has 2 sides but a track is only one song. In the NME chart the Beatles had several EP entries. As did Elvis. These were ignored.

When you buy a digital package of tracks as a single (you still can), though, is that counted as one sale for the lead track? I think so else the B sides and remixes would chart independently, but equally just buying the lead track or a remix counts. As you can have 2 quite different mixes of a song contributing towards a track total sales, there's a good argument that B sides as part of the package should count. There's also a good argument they shouldn't if the B side is more popular than the A side, and they really should be regarded as a double A side, and it becomes problematic when new singles were issued with old album tracks or previous singles as B sides...

September 4, 20159 yr I don't really know why they bother with these lists. Where do they get their info from? During the 1960s, record charts were not based on sales of any kind. Shops supplied the big music papers with lists of 50 records that were selling in that particular shop. The music papers (themselves) took up to 200 charts from various shops across the UK & Ireland & added all those shop charts together to create their own top 100s. Devil In Disguise only shipped a little over 300k in the 60s. The above list suggests 590k. Gaining some 290k in 45 years It's Only Love sold 272k, during 1980. This list suggests 580k. Where has 308k extra come from? It's not even a well known song. The Beatles list fulls apart for the non-inclusion of the Twist & Shout E.P. (selling 650k in the 60s alone) & 5 years ago 'A Hard Days Night' was at 9. Now its 17. Quite mind boggling.

According to the 2016 edition of Guinness Book of Records Elvis is the best-selling solo artist with worldwide record sales (vinyl, cassettes, CDs and downloads) of more than 1 billion units. He has the most hit albums at 129 in both the UK and US charts. He has achieved the greatest number of cumulative weeks at no. 1 in the singles chart, 80 weeks in the UK and 79 weeks in the US. Since it says units I assume Guinness have converted 1 album into 6 equivalent singles units as they did in the past. Is it possible that Elvis has sold combined singles and albums totalling 1,000 million units?

In memory of the music legend, a new retrospective called The 50 Greatest Hits is out this week, featuring – you guessed it – 50 of Elvis’s best-known songs, including Heartbreak Hotel, Blue Suede Shoes, Hound Dog and Love Me Tender. It’s currently vying for Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart, locked in a seriously tight race with Ed Sheeran. Meanwhile, a new exhibition called Elvis On Tour has been announced, opening on November 3 at London’s O2 Arena for 90s days. The show, which follows the mammoth success of the Elvis at the O2 exhibition in 2014/2015, the new shows covers the years 1969 – 1977 and will showcase more than 200 artefacts from the Graceland archives in the UK for the first time. Elvis's legacy and monetary worth remain immensely strong in 40 years after his untimely death. Since streaming started counting towards the Official Chart in summer 2014, the icon has notched up 164 million plays across all services in the UK. Topping the list is Can’t Help Falling In Love, which has notched up 13 million plays. Released in 1961 as a double A-side with Rock-A-Hula-Baby, the song reached Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart and became his signature ballad, closing many of his live performances in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Taking second place on Elvis’s most streamed songs is 1969’s Suspicious Minds (11.5m), followed by Burning Love (7m). Interestingly, 1964’s Blue Christmas, which makes Number 40 in his sales chart, is his sixth most streamed song in the UK (6.2m), no doubt bolstered by the annual surge in streaming festive songs.
