I will say, though, that watching a series of held back releases debut in high positions on a weekly basis is a lot more exciting to watch. It's what drew me into the UK charts in the first place. But I realize that my personal enjoyment isn't the purpose behind the chart's existence. :P

Lol true although it does give me great satisfaction to see an MNEK style run!

I completely agree with Rich, and at the end of the day I think it comes down to this:

OA/OS is the norm in literally every other country in the world and seems to work just fine. I don't see why the UK needs to be any different. Held back releases may attain higher chart peaks, but it's nothing more than chart manipulation to make hits appear bigger than they actually are (just my opinion).

It's all down to radio adapting and record labels and music fans realising that having a top 40 hit is the new top 10 and having a top 10 hit is the new top 3. Once again I use Hailee Steinfeld as an example as she charted at #30 in the US and that is deemed as a pretty solid success by Americans on ATRL for example, whereas we'd have deemed #30 as pretty poor just because we are used to high peak position and short chart runs.

I completely disagree with that, I think it's a LOT more exciting to see a song gradually climb to its peak!

What Rich said is pretty much spot on, and at the moment it's radio stations that need to adapt better to the OA/OS strategy and start playing songs immediately rather than wait and see how they do in the charts - newer artists will just flop without radio play (the Blonde example being the perfect one), and then radio stations don't want to play them because they've flopped, so it just creates a vicious circle.

^^ Agreed, the new Bieber song not being added to radio 1s playlist is a prime example although thankfully it has been unstoppable whereas something like Focus may fade before getting some decent spins at radio.

On radio again just look at the 1998 retro playlist put up a few weeks ago in the radio 1 playlist thread and see how songs went into the BList straight away back then and that was 3/4 years after NE at no1 became the new norm.

Anybody else heard the new Sigma and Rita Ora song? Sounds like a certified smash to my ears.

Not yet but it's a shame Redemption was so struggling :(

Listening to it now. It sounds really good! Really hope it can get to #1 if Adele hasn't shoved off by then

A vast improvement to their last couple of samey sounding songs.

Listening to it now. I don't think it's a certified smash, but it might be a grower!

Why has this shot up so suddenly? Can't just be R2 support only...

All risen due to last night's MOBO Awards I imagine. Stormzy and Krept & Konan both two awards each but best song went to Shutdown.

7 Jamie Lawson Wasn't Expecting That

This is the first time I've seen an R1 live lounge actually have an effect in ages.

Shut Up seems to be more popular than WickedSkengMan 4. During release week it was WickedSkengMan 4 that got more of the attention due to Stormzy's promotion of it but Shut Up is the freestyle that will ultimately be the better selling and more casually liked of the two.
