November 20, 20159 yr You mentioned Justin Bieber's transformation into credibility. Really reminds me of the one Justin Timberlake went through in 2002/2003 with his album 'Justified'. Largely through the help of accessible singles produced by 'cool' producers like The Neptunes and Timbaland just like Bieber has through Skrillex and Diplo. Each had a single producedced before their debut album which was a sign of things to come - Girlfriend for Timberlake and Where Are U Now for Bieber. Similarites are really uncanny.

November 21, 20159 yr Author Thanks for that Colin. Even allowing for the fact that downloads make it easier to have multiple chart entries, it is a remarkable achievement for Bieber. Who'd have thought it when his "ten singles in ten weeks" performed so poorly?

They made all their previous singles available again (don't forget singles were deleted once they had stopped selling), so people filled the gaps in their collection. I remember it well.
November 21, 20159 yr I seem to be the perennial sourface with chart stats, but in the olden days they were achieved with actual singles, as opposed to album tracks charting individually, so I just can't get worked up about Bieber and Adele multiple charting (this is going to become more and more the norm with big names in the decades to come). As I mention elsewhere, had there been streaming and downloads in the 60's, The Beatles would have had the entire top 12 or 14 every year with each new album, their EPs sold enough to make the singles charts if they had not been disqualified (and therefore they too would have charted as individual tracks) and their B sides would have done the same as they were as good as the A sides (which is what happened in the USA), and all of them would have hung around as long as the albums remained popular (which was invariably for a year or two). For 7 years they would have completely dominated the singles charts and pushed out whole legions of songs from charting. Had they been as cheap as they are today, one might even speculate that Beatles sales would have been WAY higher as records were very expensive relative to income. So, yeah, of note, but...
November 21, 20159 yr NOTE -- ADELE -- It looks like - next Friday - she will either equal or beat Justin Bieber's Chart Record of 8 Top 40 Hits by a living Artist. We will see. This is highly unlikely, she'll probably only have 2 songs in the top 40 this week (maybe 3 at a very big push). Were the album available to stream she could well have matched Bieber but as it isn't, she only has the iTunes cherrypicks to go off for all of her album tracks, and 'When We Were Young' is the only one of those that will definitely shift enough to go top 40. 'Million Years Ago' could make the sales top 40 but probably not the overall one. The rest will likely not even be top 40 on sales. (Note how most of Bieber's new entries last week were not top 40 on sales, and even 'I'll Show You' which was top 20 only scraped in on sales).
November 21, 20159 yr Popchartfreak - I know that it is far easier for a big Act to sell a lot of 'Singles' now, than in the past. Unfortunately, people who write Chart Trivia can only comment on how the Charts are each Week. The fact that some Chart Feats are easier for today's big Acts, is not really an issue. I just write about what goes on in the Charts - as does Simon, (Suedehead), & Alan Jones etc. As you say, there is 24/7, 365 Days a Year availability of Downloads. In the 1960's, 1970's, 1980's etc. an Act could only Chart if a Single was still in the Shops. Now a 'Single' can Chart forever - as long as people want to buy it. Streaming is also helping today's big Acts stay in the Singles Charts for longer. That's why we see Adele, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith etc. stay in the 'Singles' Chart for longer than Acts from previous Decades As a result, if we give 75 Points for No.1 down to 1 Point for No.75, to every Hit from the Download Era, we are already seeing more & more of the UK's All Time Singles - based on Points - taking over the All Time Top 100. The UK's Top 30 All Time Singles (Points Based) is already filling up with Hits from the past few Years. Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud is the 2nd All Time UK Single, based on Points - beaten only by My Way by Frank Sinatra, that scored so many due to Charting for 124 Weeks. November 21, 20159 yr Author Indeed, we have to accept the chart rules as they are, whether we like them or not. As I have mentioned in past commentaries, the top ten longest consecutive runs in the top forty contains one song from 1961 (Stranger On The Shore) and nine from 2012-2014. The two songs that were in second place a few years ago (FGTH's Relax and I Love You Because by Jim Reeves) are now joint eleventh.
