Thanks so much everyone for all the lovely comments

Liam - I agree! I'd say it's my second favourite on Revival after Good For You, really good song. Not even close to being the worst of the year like has been said.

Jordan - Oh yes, Only Human really should've happened, but I blame radio for that, snubbing her after two #1 singles :(

Callum - I wouldn't be able to do it without a playlist I kept adding songs to over the year I don't think :heehee: but I love counting this down and reviewing all the songs!

5 James Bay

I've mentioned already how I discovered James Bay - through his support slot on Tom Odell's tour in February 2014. That day, I picked up a free demos CD of his, and interestingly, all three of those songs ended up in my EOY top 250! Collide at #210, If You Ever Want to Be in Love at #86 and Let It Go still to come. When I first heard Hold Back the River later that year, it was love at first listen, and eventually it went to #1 in my chart. It's still to come in my songs EOY also!

I was of course very excited for James' debut album Chaos and the Calm, and it didn't disappoint, heading straight to #1 in my album chart. He's notched up five top 10s in my chart now and I saw him live at his own headline show at Brixton in October, which was a great evening and it's not hard to see why he's one of the breakout stories of the year. I'm really looking forward to what's still to come for James, hopefully a BRIT Award or two in February!

Still going up in 10s for now, we'll slow down a bit when we get to the top 50!

2015 had a new record number of #1 singles - 38 within the calendar year, and 37 of them are eligible for this countdown (Louisa Johnson will be carried to next year, and You Don't Own Me/Rest Your Love were #1s but peaked after the cut-off point so won't be reflected in their chart runs), plus two from the tail end of last year. Unsurprisingly, as we've only lost one so far, we're gonna start losing them thick and fast now, with four dropping out in this section. The second #1 of 2015, and the first #1 debut of the year, came from Rachel Taylor. Iz sent this to me as his BJSC potential and it was love at first listen. It swept my top points for that contest and has remained a favourite of mine to this day.

Also a #1 debut, Sarah Harding's first solo single was a clear #1 before it was even released. Threads got almost universally negative reviews in the Girls Aloud forum, but of course, the three Girls Aloud mods (myself, Jay and Adam) were all loving it, and it brought an end to the record breaking six weeks Conrad spent at #1 with Hold Me Up! It tired on me quite quickly sadly but I'm back to enjoying it nowadays, a completely whacky debut for Sarah but I'd have been disappointed with anything less! http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/uploads/group_images/of_18_icon.gif

Conor Maynard completes the #1s in this section with his two 2015 singles. Talking About came first, in one of the busiest chart weeks of the year for me, fighting competition from Ulrik Munther (Nån gång), Carly Rae Jepsen (I Really Like You) and Cody Simpson (New Problems), debuting at #1 as part of an all-new top 4. Talking About ends up lower than all those songs bar New Problems however, which finishes just one place lower. Talking About is one of the surprise flops of the year for me, getting Radio 1 a-list support but failing to crack the UK top 40. Royalty also debuted at #1, on a slightly easier week, but had a worse chart run. I still quite like it though and it didn't deserve to flop as badly as it did in the official chart.

On the topic of New Problems, it's Cody's highest placed track, leading to his lowest EOY chart position since I started doing these lists in 2012. His yearly peaks have been #3 in 2012 (Wish U Were Here), #11 in 2013 (La Da Dee) and #16 in 2014 (Surfboard). I heard New Problems live in May 2015 when I went to see Cody, and on that night also, I re-discovered a song from 2012 that I quite liked at the time but totally forgot about afterwards. As a result of him being a support act for Cody, Hey L.A. by Ryan Beatty saw a huge resurgence in my chart, achieving a peak position 31 places higher than its original one. The song is a typical teenage guy pure pop song, similar to the Jesper Jenset song in the last section where it's not anything original, but it does what it does really well. It was a nice surprise hearing it live as I thought he'd totally blank it, having moved to a more acoustic direction since.

Moving away from #1s now, we see Ariana Grande and her soundalike Pia Mia placed next to each other. Interestingly, they both debuted on the same week in my chart, both left the chart the same week, and spent most of their chart runs side by side (you can see the first five weeks above). Focus is a great song for Ariana, it's basically Problem part 2 but that was #7 in my EOY last year so it can't be a bad thing haha. Pia Mia didn't manage to outdo Do It Again in my EOY with Touch, but the latter remains a great generic pop track and one I wish would crack the UK top 40 :(

One Direction make their third highest appearance with album track Love You Goodbye at #76. The chorus features stunning vocals from Harry Styles, proving that he's my favourite for more reasons than just aesthetic ones lol. You can discuss the song in the One Direction forum. Finally, closing out the section we have another track from Ulrik Munther, the first of his three 2015 singles to appear. Närmare himlen is the opening track on his third album, and was an instant highlight of mine, with a catchy chorus even if I don't understand a word of it  The song was just impacting my chart as the cut-off point occurred so its position is slightly lower than it may have been if it impacted a few months ago but nonetheless, Ulrik has two songs still to come so it's been a good year for him.

PS: Also check out the Katy Perry forum. She's not released anything this year so can't shoehorn a link in :')

PICK OF THE SECTION

I'm still so glad I gave you such a great discovery in Porcelain, that's what it's all about so seeing that come up is excellent. Keep going with the writing too, you're almost doing as well as me.

68 Zedd - Papercut (feat. Troye Sivan) - 9-9-18-28-32-33-X (6 weeks)

69 Nathan Sykes - Over and Over Again - 2-… (1+ weeks)

70 RHODES - Close Your Eyes - 1-3-10-19-23-33-X (6 weeks)

After a #1 heavy section in the last post, only one features here, and we kick off with it at #70. RHODES' album was one I picked up on a whim, having enjoyed his Birdy collaboration Let It All Go. It turned out to be a real treat of an album and Close Your Eyes struck a chord with me when I first heard it. It didn't have good longevity however, but it definitely deserved that week at #1.

This section sees two of my favourites collaborating with DJs to create dance songs. First up is Troye Sivan, who collaborated with Zedd on the third single from his album True Colors, entitled Papercut. I only checked this out due to Troye's name being attached and the length of the song, 7:23, almost put me off entirely. Long songs are very very rarely something I can get behind. Papercut however doesn't even slightly drag, and Troye's vocals really bring the track to life. "You're so pretty when you're mad" is my favourite lyric  The other dance song in this section comes from Arty, who enlisted the vocal talents of Conrad Sewell for single Braver Love. It's totally generic and that kinda song can be quite boring to me these days so it really is all down to the vocals in this case, and Conrad delivers as always.

Troye appears again just above Papercut, with my BJSC Halloween spin-off entry BITE. The song features on the WILD EP and on the deluxe edition of album Blue Neighbourhood, and quite frankly it not being on the standard edition is ridiculous. The production on the song is top notch, creating quite an eerie and scary atmosphere, while Troye recalls his first experience of a gay club in the lyrics: "kiss me on the mouth and set me free, but please don't bite". It's got a very dark sound to it, not one you'd expect from him either, but it works so well.

As one fifth of The Wanted, Nathan Sykes only made my chart with two songs - We Own the Night and Show Me Love (America), with the latter giving him and the group a peak of #16. His first solo single didn't make my top 40, but follow-up debuted straight at #2 following his X Factor performance. The song is a gorgeous refined ballad, showing off his voice really well. So much better than the nice but dated Kiss Me Quick. On the topic of flops, Union J had the first song to be the #1 best-selling of the week, but not #1 overall when they held the song off streaming services at the very end of 2014. You Got It All is a lovely ballad and became their highest charting single in my chart to date. It charts in this EOY because it impacted after the cut-off date for 2014.

Hilary Duff appears with yet another album track at #66, her last appearance in the countdown. The collaboration with Big Time Rush singer Kendall Schmidt is about meeting a stranger and sharing a taxi ride together. Very romantic. Also a non-single, S Club 7 impact my EOY chart with previously unreleased 2001 song Rain. The song was used in their TV series Viva S Club but never got released, leaving fans crying out for a release in the future. It was added as the only new song to the 2015 re-issue of their Best greatest hits album. It missed #1 two weeks running because of Britney and Iggy's Pretty Girls, which was released the same week.

The two songs left were both huge UK #1 hits, and both peaked at #4 in my chart. They're also huge Rob (Robot) faves and I'm expecting him to have a go at me for them being so low and call me a Little Mix hater :kink: Black Magic had a bit of a slow start for me but I now find it irresistible and it's without a doubt one of the biggest pop tunes of the year. The chorus is very catchy and the video is top notch! I'd say it's my second favourite single of theirs, behind How Ya Doin'? (with Missy of course). Ellie Goulding's Love Me Like You Do is also one of the defining hits of the year, spending four weeks at #1 in the UK. It had a very good run in my chart too, spending five weeks in the top 10 and 11 weeks in the top 40 overall. The Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack song was instant for me and the way it builds is all part of the magic.

PICK OF THE SECTION

Some fab picks here Joseph! Hilary relevancy *.* Also nice to see Threads make an appearance (even though it is worse than Kimberley's album)

71 Conor Maynard - Talking About quite catchy but weak at the same time, deserved its chart succes I think

77 Pia Mia - Touch very good but prefer DIA

78 Ariana Grande - Focus this was great for a while but got old a bit quick for me. Problem was much better

80 Conor Maynard - Royalty same with TA

61 Union J - You Got It All their weakest song I think but still good. lol at its chart run

63 Ellie Goulding - Love Me Like You Do  100% chart success deserved

64 Little Mix - Black Magic

65 Arty - Braver Love (feat. Conrad Sewell) good track

68 Zedd - Papercut (feat. Troye Sivan) good track from True Colours, still not his usual high standard though. I expect this is here bc of Troye featuring in it :heehee:

• never got into that Arty song despite me loving a lot of his previous efforts, oops.

• 'Papercut' was definitely the standout of Zedd's otherwise disappointing album. Troye's got a nice voice too, I'm getting into 'Wild' now too even with it having already been and gone from the R1 playlist.

Love Me Like You Do & Black Magic both highlights of last year in the pop department.

Braver Love was quite good as well even if I never loved it.

Hi Joseph.

4 Years & Years

Just ahead of James Bay are his fellow critics' choice nominees, Years & Years. Funnily enough, the first time I heard Hold Back the River was also the same time I heard Years & Years' Desire, the first track I heard of theirs (excluding Sunlight). I really liked it and didn't in a million years (& years :basil:) expect them to top it by such a margin not once, not twice, but three times with the follow-up singles. King gave them a second hit in my chart and Shine their first #1.

I wasn't so keen on Communion when I first heard it but it hit me with a second listen. King, Shine and Eyes Shut are easily the best three but there's so much to enjoy. Eyes Shut became their second #1 in my chart and has spent over 20 weeks there to date. These three songs are all still to come in my songs countdown also! I saw Years & Years live at Brixton last October and really enjoyed it, the energy was high and Olly's vocals were on form (they aren't always). There's no-one like Y&Y in the chart right now and their breakthrough year has been deservedly huge, really excited for what's still to come from them!

Hi There Joseph

Black Magic is too low, just such a good pop track imo. So happy they're doing so well in the charts at the moment because their music is the best it's ever been.

Glad to see LMLYD at a similar position to mine, I really did like it but everyone seems to have it so high on their lists. Glad she got another massive hit though this era, her music sounds more polished now but I think poppier suits her.

51 Demi Lovato - Cool for the Summer - 2-3-9-11-17-18-27-24-28-31-34-39-X (12 weeks)

52 Fifth Harmony - Worth It (feat. Kid Ink) - 13-23-26-38-X-32-22-17-16-14-7-14-20-26-36-X (14 non-consecutive weeks)

54 Justin Bieber - Love Yourself - 30-3-5-… (3+ weeks)

55 Isac Elliot - Lipstick (feat. Tyga) - 9-6-10-14-22-28-32-X (7 weeks)

56 Mitchel Musso - The In Crowd - 1-2-2-8-14-28-31-X (7 weeks)

57 Skrillex & Diplo - Where Are Ü Now (feat. Justin Bieber) - 30-24-22-17-23-30-32-X-25-33-36-X-37-X (11 non-consecutive weeks)

58 Isac Elliot - Just Can't Let Her Go - 6-9-5-2-5-7-13-16-24-33-X (10 weeks)

59 Reed Deming - Satellites - 10-17-27-36-X-1-2-4-7-11-12-18-26-33-39-X (14 non-consecutive weeks)

60 AURORA - Half the World Away - 22-2-6-14-… (4+ weeks)

Heading up the top 60 is AURORA, the singer of 2015's John Lewis Christmas advert song. I was unfamiliar with AURORA before I heard Half the World Away but I really liked the track, and John Lewis advert songs have a very strong hit rate with me, particularly Tom Odell's cover of Real Love for the Monty the Penguin campaign in 2014. This one isn't as good but it continues the now four-year streak of the advert songs reaching my top 3 (Gabrielle Aplin peaked at #3, Lily Allen #2 and Tom Odell #1).

Two BJSC entries of mine in this section! The first one comes from Reed Deming, who has reminded me that I actually lied about Want Me More being his highest placed song at #109 :') Satellites, while it doesn't match the EOY #3 high of previous single Crash Test Dummy (Broken), still performed pretty well and peaked at #1 in my chart. It DNQ'd in BJSC sadly, when I sent it a year ago  Jakob Karlberg provides my other BJSC entry in this section, and he performed much better with debut hit Fan va bra. It became a top 20 hit, just about, when I sent it in the 8th contest of last year. The James Bay lookalike (not letting this go) serves up a catchy pop track with a lot of charm involved.

Also a kind-of BJSC entry, having been entered to BJFestivalen by me in the middle of the year, Isac Elliot's Just Can't Let Her Go managed to squeeze into my EOY last year. It continued to impact in 2015 and I felt it was significant enough to include here! The 1D reject is a solid pop track, the closest he's come to matching debut hit New Way Home (EOY #13 in 2013). The lead single from his third album, Lipstick, finishes higher here because it's had a greater impact within 2015. The Tyga collaboration has a slight early 00s vibe to it, another solid track from Isac.

Another artist who features twice in this section is Justin Bieber. First up is the song that basically reinvigorated his entire career - Where Are Ü Now. It started life as an emotional ballad called The Most, before Skrillex & Diplo remixed it into the monster hit we know today. It had a low peak in my chart and was a huge slow-burner but I can safely say I've not felt bored of it at any point. It's also the highest non-top 10 hit in my countdown! The third single from Justin's Purpose album is at #54, just a few spots above. Love Yourself is Justin's third UK #1 and is still riding high in my chart despite not hitting the top spot (yet). Love Yourself is likely to remain eligible for 2016's EOY countdown at this rate so expect it higher there!

The filling sandwiched between the Justin/Isac double is Mitchel Musso's The In Crowd. This is a slightly random song to have reached #1 in 2015, considering it was at that point 5 years old. Mitchel starred in the ghastly Disney show Hannah Montana (I saw it way too many times through my sister :(), and like basically every Disney star, decided to release an album. The In Crowd struck a chord with me from first listen after I bought the album in CEX for £1 just to give it a try. It faded quickly in my affections, hence a brief chart run, but that first week at #1 was 100% deserved despite the randomness of the entire thing.

We close off the section with two huge pop songs. Fifth Harmony's Worth It was their big breakthrough smash worldwide, taking them to the top 15 in the US and the top 3 in the UK - apparently the first US top 20 from a girl group since The Pussycat Dolls with Jai Ho :drama: Worth It is extremely catchy and Kid Ink's rap is fun whilst not entirely necessary. The former X Factor USA contestants are joined by judge Demi Lovato in this section, who is just one place higher with Cool for the Summer. The huge pop song was kept off #1 by Conrad Sewell's six week reign with Hold Me Up, but managed a very good top 40 run and gave Demi her most successful solo hit in my chart (Somebody To You is more successful overall).

I'll begin the top 50 counting down in groups of 5 to slow things down a tad! (and these essays take ages when it covers 10 songs lmao)
