Commentary

The chart starts with the first dose of Pep & Rash, an act that could possibly be the first to have the first and last in the hot 100 as 'Rumors' is a strong contender for this year's #1. This is the kind of song you'd expect to hear from the duo now, but at the start of the year when I hadn't heard of them before it felt really fresh. It still remains somewhat of a banger hence why it starts the top 100, but doesn't quite have the punch of their follow-ups 'Rumors' and 'Red Roses' which we'll be seeing a lot later on in the chart.

Commentary

After the brilliant effort that was 'Shotgun' I was excited to find out that Yellow Claw had returned with a new song, the brilliant 'Till It Hurts' which has all the elements of their previous hit but for me it's even better. Ayden's plea for love so hard it hurts works really well with the business of the buildup, and when it drops... it DROPS!! This is how to make good bassy trap music kids. It actually has a proper melody as well as dropping the bass which I love. Although it's not the highest trap song in the countdown, we have Fetty Wap and Major Lazer yet to appear.

Commentary

So here's the first of all ten Danaelandan BJSC entries of the year. It's quite the standard house tune and it works well, instantly having me hooked. The lyrics are really uplifting too which is always great in a song and the repeated sequence of piano chords is also a great addition. They are still yet to release a follow-up single but if this sets the standard I'll be looking forward to it.

Commentary

The long version of this song leaked last year but when it was given a proper release this year with a radio edit it really hit me. The deadmau5 production is up with his best really, I love it when he does progressive house tunes like these rather than his more experimental stuff. Sadly this may be the last time we see him in an EOY thread as he recently said he was thinking of quitting the deadmau5 alias, proceeding to then delete his facebook and twitter. The vocal on this is brilliant too, she really delivers her emotion in the song.

Commentary

Grime's been around for a while and made a few decent tracks but not until this year have a few really hit it for me, and yes this is not the only grime freestyle in the chart. So many amusing and quotable lyrics really, and the beat's great too (I remember it from a former BJSC entry, DJ XTC 'Functions On The Low'). And if you hate this then Stormzy's got a few words for you

Till It Hurts was also massive for me about this time last year, much prefer to Shotgun.

Only now Shut Up from this lot, lol, it is starting to grow on me fast now, so pleased to see it be a top 10 hit especially just because it's so different. Shutdown is still my 2015 grime anthem though.

Don't Be So Hard On Yourself is too low! Pure joy from start to finish, one of the most uplifting tracks out there, I'm a big fan of her voice too, she just sounds fantastic on the middle 8 and final chorus when she starts really going for it.

 

Here for You is now my favourite Kygo track actually, at first I thought it was a bit too subtle but it feels really delicate now which I really like, contrasts very well with Ella's fantastic vocals too.

Nah, 'Firestone' is leagues bettter than anything he's done. That'll be very high in this chart.

thing is, 'Gravity' is not one of his best ever tracks in the opinion of Dan. :P

'Hold My Hand' will be a lot higher than 'Don't...' for me, it just does the sound better.

Commentary

What a brilliant trance song this is. It was instantly one of the highlights of the album and then I grew to love it even more when it got a single release (not that a single release means anything considering A&B do nothing in the official singles chart). Zoe just has a lovely and unique voice which really works for these types of songs hence her being a frequent collaborator of A&B. I guess this song reminding me of flying to New York this Summer (for obvious reasons) is part of its appeal. I love the emotion in the song though, it's just something a regular ~sick~ banging tune can't convey. Contrary to that there'll be plenty of ~sick~ banging tunes later to come..

Commentary

EDX just keeps on proving that he's one of the best deep house producers in the scene. After appearing last year with 'Reckless Ardor' and 'Breathin' he comes back with the great 'Want You', which was good enough on its own to have four weeks in my chart but what really gave it its position is the vocal addition by BB Diamond. Previously unknown singer who has now gone on to being featured in a Shift K3Y track, so maybe we'll see more of her next year. There's just lots of great vibes in the song, and with the vocal edit still containing the only lyric from the original "you know I want you babe" it only feels like it's adding to the song. All-round great tune.

Commentary

Here's someone I didn't expect to re-appear in my EOY Hot 100. Loreen of Eurovision winning fame surprised me with actually releasing decent music post-contest and her comeback single 'Paper Light' was everything I loved about her. Fantastic vocal even though she's basically Sweden's equivalent to Sia when it comes to diction. And a catchy dancepop beat and chorus to back it up. Would be great if she could somehow represent at Eurovision again but it seems she's not on the shortlist. Oh well their entry is usually one of the best of the contest regardless.

Commentary

Years & Years decided to follow-up the brilliant 'King' (yet to come) with this, and with it being a mid-tempo pop tune it wasn't something I'd certainly love, but I did eventually love it. It's a well crafted pop song really and it was good to see a different side to them. The instrumental bit before the final chorus in particular really increases my enjoyment of this. The whole instrumental in general is brilliant and something they should do more of with their midtempos (cough, don't make more 'Eyes Shut's, that song needed the Sam Feldt remix for me to enjoy it) (and maybe they do anyway, I forgot how their album tracks sounded like now)

Commentary

This became somewhat of a surprise chart megasmash which I am really glad happened as it's a great tune. People compared it to 'Where Are Ü Now' which I got but this does the sound better for me. MNEK and Zara's voices really gel together too and I love a duet when it's done well. Not much more to say really, you all know this song and I'm tired.

Shine is definitely their best track IMO, although Sunlight runs it close.

 

Above & Beyond have been catching my eye this year, I think All Over The World is my favourite so glad that was your top 10 hit.

Never got 'Never Forget You personally. It's only ever been alright for me but nothing amazing like it's been made out to be. I prefer 'Lush Life' by far!
