SONGS

02. Kitty - ❄ MISS U ❄

"If I felt any type of way it might be lonesome" - a song that shows it fully understands me even in the first 10 words uttered. Kitty for me is the greatest, undiscovered star on the planet. Her music is insane and fun and her entire identity is revealed through these glorious tracks. '❄ MISS U ❄' is probably my favourite from her, it's joyous, fierce and totally bonkers. It appears as quite a defeatest song in its opening but it's soon to be revealed anything but as she powers on through and assumes full control over song and man eventually culminating in that anthemic chorus. The lyrics of the song are so fantastic and the glittery beat is as wondrous as ever, it's trule a special moment of musical gold. I sent it to BJSC after falling in love with '•.¸.•SECOND♥LIFE•.¸.•' from her last year and i've been totally engrossed and fascinated by her EP ever since. She's a brilliant, unique talent and is probably responsible for me most anticipated album release of the year (yes perhaps even ahead of Gaga/Kanye and the likes). A true behemoth of pop/dance gold and totally genre smashing, rule breaking, mayhem.

SONGS

01. Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me

Obviously. The greatest pop song in years from the greatest pop album in years. 'Run Away With Me' is a glorious pop gem full of such exuberance, passion, sadness, hope and beauty. It's 'Teenage Dream' reincarnate and this is high praise from me. From the glorious sax(?) opening, to the dark, pulsating, sultry beats that beat throughout her opening verse, through to her dreamy, breathy, airy vocals right to that explosive, climactic, orgasmic chorus the song is perfection. The final chorus is the highlight of the album, the entire song touches breaking point but never quite reaches it and it's incredible how she holds your grip throughout it all without ever letting you go, until that final moment where the entire world is at her feet and she just let's go. It's musically matched by the lyrics. She sings of staying, running away, driving all night, kissing in the moonlight, gorgeously revealed through her passionate vocals; it's total escapism in a song and a wondrous example of how music can be the cure to

Like much of the album the song sits somewhere between total euphoria and deep, solemn sadness and that's exactly how it makes me feel with every listen. I am at times elated and on top of the world, untouchable, and racing through my emotions at lightning speed. At other times I reminice of moments where i've felt I wanted to run away, solemn moments of solidarity where no one is within reach except your own desires and fantasies and those intense nights with nothing but your own thoughts. But most of all, it always makes me feel alive. The song is filled to the brim with life and energy and while it can spur up a whole array of emotions in me, it's always a delight and I can't see myself ever getting tired of the whimsical, magical song. An utter beauty and total pop perfection in 3 minutes.

I'd run away with you

I'd have demanded a recount if that wasn't #1. A really great pop song, I don't quite GET it like you and many others do but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy it lots. A great pop track and a worthy #1!

A fantastic countdown Ball, packed with insightful commentary

No surprises there, I also don't quite see RAWM as the highest highlight of Emotion, but I'd feel conned if it wasn't your #1. I think I pretty much associate that song with you.

Great countdown, Bal. I really enjoyed reading your in depth analysis of the songs that made the cut here, your connection, understanding and love of music is as alive as ever. <3

Much love for your top 2  'MISS U' was a grower for me, I didn't point it in BJSC but SOMETHING about it made me keep it on my iPod until it became one of my belated faves from the contest you sent it to and definitely the entry of yours I've listened to most!

Run Away With Me is a moment just on its own, and (for me at least) multiplied by the moment of realizing that Carly's album really would live up to the hype, like the anticipation of something special turning into reality. You just can't help but feel proud of her for making it :snif: (and yes that is sax on the intro!)

Fantastic #1 Bal. I've been reading and enjoying your writing but haven't found an appropriate place to comment yet, Run Away With Me is such a lovely pop song that took an age to hit me properly but it's so undeniable in its beauty now, I'm glad it's reached your top spot, I wouldn't have expected anything else given the amount of love you've shown for it over the year.

Very pleased to see I'm A Ruin up so high as well, what a highlight from Marina.

'Run Away With Me' is glorious, always fills me with so much joy every time I listen to it.
No surprise at that #1 :kink: But fully deserved, I totally agree with you about how bittersweet it is but it always manages to fill me with euphoria on each listen really <3

YAS CARLY SLAYE. As just published, I liked your #1s almost as much as you did. She really is a godsend, isn't she? SAVIOUR OF POP. QUEEN RAE JEPSEN. etc. I didn't know you were such a fan, god we need to reconnect properly :(

'Good for You' I only just cut from my 50, but it really is a sensual jam. 'I'm A Ruin' is still sneaking up on my Marina rankings and DAMN IT, can't believe I forgot to mention 'Love Me Badder' in my list!! Such a good pop song.

Hadn't heard 'Shades of Blue' so I'm just listening now, a keeper for sure! Rather bewitching.

Very happy to see 'Ghosttown' so high. Madonna has always excelled with her ballads and she still managed to bring something special to this one. Really inspiring song of unconditional love and there's a real beauty in the lyrics, contrasting with the explicitness of 'Living for Love'. Safe to say it sits high and proud on my imaginary Madonna all-time list and I'm not ashamed to admit it kind of did from the moment I heard it.

I never listened to 'I'm a Ruin' until it appeared in your countdown - I seem to recall hearing it be praised throughout the year but never got round to listen to it or the full album - but it is a really beautiful song. It deals with complex emotions and the difficulty of admitting what you know is right which makes it an identifiable but somewhat uncomfortable listen, but I like that about ballads; I like to feel the emotion that's conveyed by the artist and spurred in myself. If this is what the album is like, I need to listen to it already.

Gorgeous #1! It's a grand example of current pop music at its finest and I agree it is a great mix of euphoria and poignancy.

Fantastic countdown. Really insightful commentaries and I've got a lot of music added to my "need to listen" list!
