Madonna said I remind her of Michael

21. Carly Rae Jepsen - Warm Blood

22. Madonna ft. Mike Tyson & Chance the Rapper – Iconic

23. Blonde ft. Melissa Steel - I Loved You

A song that only properly hit me earlier this year and became a huge grower for me throughout it. Blonde teaming up with Ms. Steel offered a dancefloor filler full of such energy and catchiness, I grooved to it nearly every single week as it became a club staple for me in the early months of the year. And there's reason for it, the song is techno-gold.

And so begins the onslaughts from Madonna and Carly. Madonna's begins with the HUGE 'Iconic' one of the more underrated (and dare I say in some circles hated) songs on the album but for me it's the biggest, baddest and best album track on her latest offering. Cheesy as f***, but who cares? It kick-started the tour in stupendous style and made the song come to live even more than in studio form. It's so fast paced and multi-dimensional - from the slurring speech from Tyson, through her aggressive verses, the infectious, imaginative chorus and finally Chance's frenzied rap, the entire song is a FIGHT and a FEAST and proves that the old dog still has a world of tricks in her.

Finally, before we get to the big top 20 is one of many Carly songs to feature. In 'Warm Blood' the artist takes a different turn to the songs that surround it. The dark production is the strongest element of the song, i've actually set it as my alarm to wake me up every single morning because the freaky, spine-chilling vibes are the perfect thing to rise to in the morning. It's a slow build up of a song, where she explores her inner secrets and emotions. The opening line: "I've got a cavern of secrets, none of them are for you" is the perfect rouse to draw you into the song and with the control that she has over the song she never once lets you lose interest. She is both the powerful warrior of the song and the subservient underdog, giving in to her temptations. One of the most interesting songs on an album already filled to the brim with messages, and glorious songs.

Hi Haus! :hi: I have been popping in and out of this thread to read your beautiful commentaries but not had the time to comment, so I feel as though now is a good time now that we're on the verge of your Top 10 albums and Top 20 singles. From the recap, these are the ones I like:

100. Ben Haenow ft. Kelly Clarkson - Second Hand Heart

From the second round of Madonna instant grats, 'Iconic' was definitely my favourite. I agree it's totally cheesy at parts, but it's completely what Madonna is about right now (no not being cheesy!): being the best you can be, not being afraid to express yourself and remembering to love yourself even when others don't. Looking at the crediting, it just seems too bizarre for a Madonna/Chance the Rapper/Mike Tyson collab to actually be successful, but neither of the featured acts' input seems out of place and it makes me eager to hear more of Hip-Hop-Madonna (I hope the rumoured collabs with Kanye, Kendrick and Drake that were floating about last year are true). Also, 'Iconic' was just the perfect tour opener. *.*

The only albums I've listened to from your list so far are Little Mix' and Florence + the Machine's. I agree with Regina that, in regards to Little Mix, it's only really the three singles and 'Lightning' that do anything for me. More songs like 'Love Me Like You' and 'Secret Love Song' or more R&B-influenced stuff like 'Move' would be good for me. Florence + co, however, have delivered yet another stunning album. I've not yet read too deep into the lyrics and background of the songs (which I'm aware there are a lot of detailed paragraphs on the songs all over the internet) but just listening by ear you can appreciate the beauty of the whole album. The singles have been chosen PERFECTLY and it's very rare for an album to do that these days.

So far:

22. Madonna ft. Mike Tyson & Chance the Rapper – Iconic

23. Blonde ft. Melissa Steel - I Loved You

24. Drake ft. PARTYNEXTDOOR - Preach

26. Ciara – Give Me Love

Thank you all for the comments! Into the real best of the best for me now, but i'll try and race through it regardless!

I knew you'd be the one to properly appreciate 'Iconic' It's everything you've said about it and more. Also hoping those collabs surface (and they're not too cringy ). She is still on top of her game and I can't believe she's still going so well <3

Hi Bal

Iconic is actually really good, always one of my favourites from when it was first released. It does have some very good tracks on the album but sometimes I just want less electronic and more cheesy pop goodness like True Blue or Open Your Heart :(

ILY hit me from first listen in BJSC so I was ecstatic when it started pickign up in the charts, just so energetic and joyous and some very nice vocals too. Still their best imo but they have some really good songs now which just instantly lift your mood.

Give me that sweet surrender. I'll be released.

ALBUM

10. Hurts - Surrender

Nothing Will Be Bigger Than Us / Some Kind Of Heaven / Rolling Stone

And so we enter my top 10 albums of 2015. Starting it off is a band we have liked for a while, consistently strong albums, stunning visuals and a unique style that makes their music instantly recognisable... Until of course they went a bit mainstream and dabbled with Calvin Harris... And as news spread that they were continuing this much more pop/dance sound for their 3rd album, I, like many others had my reservations. But what the album does is instantly quash those fears and doubts. Yes it is a pop/dance album, but it is pop/dance at it's absolute finest and most electrifying. Songs that make you dance like crazy and scream along to at the top of your voice. But what distinguishes it from all the other faceless albums of a similar ilk is the powering vocals of Theo, that distinct tone, so brazenly placed on top of the album's thumping beats and intense sounds.

Highlights come in the form of 'Nothing Will Be Bigger Than Us' (will there ever be a song they produce that is bigger than this?), the album's main single 'Some Kind of Heaven' and 'Rolling Stone'. The latter fits somewhere between eery ballad and dancefloor classic. The lyrics are literary gold, but it's the guitar and instrumentation that elevates the song to special status. It's a non-stop album, full of roaring choruses and ear-thumping beats and a big recommendation for anyone that might be even slightly curious as to what sound they've channeled now after the much darker, sombre albums that came before.

Set flame to the doubt

SONGS

20. Dawn Richard - ft. Aundrea Fimbres - Phoenix

Now, I don't really do Eurovision, but this song has been compared to a Eurovision smasher and if this is the sort of stuff they offer there then count me in. 'Phoenix' properly hit me a few listens in. The chorus hits you like a train, before mellowing and being brought back to life in the following verses. It's a song sung with so much power and vigour it's hard to ignore. The vocals sound silky, smooth and sensual, the music is sparkly, sprightly and joyous and the lyrics are inspirational. It's a near perfect pop song full of just the right amount of emotion, tenderness and out-right abrasive aggression. Only the most committed and dedicated artists can let go the way Dawn does in this song and it's an incredible experience with every listen.

19. Zedd ft. Selena Gomez - I Want You To Know

Judge me all you want. This is a tune and a half. I was a fan of Zedd in his previous album and though the follow-up failed to capture my interest in a similar way, teaming up with on-off-ex beau Selena worked wonders. His recognisable beats merge perfectly with her distinct vocals - it's the perfect marriage of style and.. more style. The substance is lacking, granted, but when it's as beautifully crafted as this, and as undeniably catchy it doesn't matter in the slightest. I can even groove to the breakdown and that's a rare accomplishment for a generic dance song to have with me.

I Want You to Know is really good, much better than most Zedd things I've heard! Selena's vocals on it too
I knew you'd be the one to properly appreciate 'Iconic' It's everything you've said about it and more. Also hoping those collabs surface (and they're not too cringy ). She is still on top of her game and I can't believe she's still going so well <3

It would be a wasted opportunity if they were cringy I think. Perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself, but it would be great if it could introduce Madonna to a whole new demographic. Not that I'm expecting her to get tones of chart success either, but if Madonna could get some of her coolness and respect back, that would help her a lot in pushing her career a little more. People only seem to know Madonna for "not acting her age" or being "desperate" which, in all fairness, you can't really blame them for, so if the light could be shined on her music again (and having the backing of respected artists in the hip-hop world should certainly help), that'd be great!

-x-

For some reason, I can't get into Hurts' albums as much as I want too. Every so often, they have a song which captures my interests perfectly, but then others just don't hit me. 'Devotion' is my absolute favourite - not even just because of Kylie's in-put but, on the topic of which, I'd love Kylie to release more music like this: it's so much like 'Confide in Me' (which Hurts nailed as well). In regards to their current album, 'Nothing Will Be Bigger Than Us' is just an absolute jam!

Warm Blood  Absolute tune.

I Want You To Know is a jam as well although there are many better Selegend songs from this year :kink:

Loving you is complicated

ALBUM

09. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly

The Blacker the Berry / King Kunta / u / Mortal Man

The album that got the entire world talking when it was unexpectedly released and shot to #1 everywhere. A monumental album in many ways, i'll only briefly touch on it and try to do it justice here. First up, I have been a fan of Kendrick for AGES. 'Good Kid, M.A.A.D City' is still one of the most exciting bodies of work i've ever heard. This album came with a lot more political, personal and global backing behind it. The title, which I was initially quite appalled by, makes sense when you hear the album. It's a reference to 'To Kill A Mockingbird' a book all about racism and injustice and that is exactly what this album explores. It is about the position of minorities in today's society, it is about fighting against injustice, it is about music and the power it has to change the world. The album expertly explores these themes, very overtly in moments such as 'The Blacker the Berry' but more intrinsically in the final send off, 'Mortal Man'.

The lyrics are the strong point of the album, every song is intricately made up of deep, meaningful lyrics but this also becomes one of the album's very few flaws. It is at times TOO rich, too layered, too deep that it becomes overwhelming a listen. I struggle sometimes to even start the album because I know how far it goes and it can only be heard with full attention to really soak in. Still, he is the best urban artist around at the moment and this album is phenomenal.

Never did I imagine that Kendrick Lamar would have a UK #1 album. That was the biggest shock of the year. Still underrated in my opinion he is.
