December 31, 20159 yr Author http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ohCVOH85L._AA300_.jpg #006 Foals “What Went Down” iuQQIawCqBA Debut: 21st June 2015 CR: 21-09-01-01-01-01-02-04-05-07-10-16-26-32-40-46 (16 weeks) Unfortunately nothing ever quite matches up to the raw energy and power of album-opener and title track “What Went Down”, which builds and peaks when Yannis howls through the distorted chorus When I see a man, I see a liar. They still maintain their unparalleled consistency with at least 1 single peaking at #1 of each studio album so far.
December 31, 20159 yr Author #005 C Duncan “Garden” MC-q1ldXNSY Debut: 28th June 2015 CR: 42-31-19-11-05-03-02-01-01-03-06-09-14-18-27-34-39-45-48-50 (20 weeks) The dreamy highlight from 25 year old Scottish singer/songwriter Christopher Duncan’s debut LP Architect, was without a doubt “Garden”. Moving along at quite a pace, and filled with layered vocals and harmonies that glide effortlessly in amongst the electronic production without becoming overshadowed, Duncan delivered the perfect song for summer 2015.
December 31, 20159 yr Author http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm82/TheMagicPosition86/rsz_pretty_pimpin_zpslr6kilcx.png #004 Kurt Vile “Pretty Pimpin” 659pppwniXA Debut: 28th June 2015 CR: 47-32-17-09-05-02-01-01-01-02-04-05-05-10-15-22-28† (17 weeks.. so far) 35 year-old Pennsylvanian Kurt Vile founded the band War On Drugs in the mid-2000s but departed soon after their first album Wagonwheel Blues was released in 2008 to pursue a prolific solo career with sixth album b'lieve I'm goin down.... released this year. Lead-off single “Pretty Pimpin” is a self-penned ode to the depressing inevitability of growing old (notice a theme in this Top 10. :P ) and not quite recognising yourself anymore, a wry and rather humorous look at what most people go through in their late 20s and early 30s - wryly noting that despite becoming a stranger to his self-perception his clothes were still 'pretty pimpin'. December 31, 20159 yr Author http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/812MkD5KecL._SL300_.jpg #003 FKA twigs “In Time” Debut: 16th August 2015 CR: 47-29-17-07-03-01-01-01-01-02-04-04-08-14-21-29-36-38-38-34† (20 weeks.. so far) Tahliah Barnett remained on top form in 2015, and in the summer dropped the fantastic M3LL155X EP (pronounced: Melissa) from which the clear highlight and de-facto centrepiece was the epic “In Time”. Though the themes of the song about a strained relationship aren't particularly unique, with Tahliah’s powerful chants of In time, you’ll be doing me right… you’ve got a goddamn nerve set against the ominous trap flavoured drum loops that flit in and out, and the towering lead synth that warble through the track - we have one of the most captivating singles of the year. December 31, 20159 yr Author http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31TUrQg5uIL._AA300_.jpg #002 Jamie xx ft. Romy “Loud Places” TP9luRtEqjc Debut: 29th March 2015 CR: 39-22-11-07-04-06-04-03-01-01-01-01-02-04-08-14-20-25-32-37-45-46-48 (23 weeks) He started the countdown at 100 with “I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)” and very nearly topped it too with the wonderfully simple “Loud Places”, which essentially serves as an unofficial the ‘xx’ single featuring as it does Romy on vocal duties. Idris Muhammad is the main sample here from his “Could Heaven Ever Be Like This” single and it is used to excellent effect lifting the melody in the chorus as Romy’s melancholic vocal follows Jamie’s beat on a song that fuse together a brilliant blend of mainstream pop, left-field UK garage influence and sobering lyrics that speak of the (often) relentless futility of attempting to find that special someone. December 31, 20159 yr Author #001 of 2015 Grimes “REALiTi” N9XKLqGqwLA Debut: 15th March 2015 CR: 29-14-06-01-01-01-01-01-02-04-05-06-08-08-10-12-17-22-27-31-36-42-48-49 (24 weeks) There was pretty much no doubt what would be number 1 when I ran the spreadsheet - blitzing the competition since the spring it has been Grimes’ “REALiTi” that has led the race for much of the year after spending 5 weeks at the top in April and May. What was cast aside as a ‘rough demo’ that was part of an abandoned project actually sounded like a rare gem which espouses Claire Boucher’s mainstream ambitions (every morning there are mountains to climb) without compromising on her artistic integrity, it is full of dreamy pop melodies and synths that dance around her heavenly vocals. Thankfully it was saved and eventually became part of the pop album of 2015 when it was remastered on Art Angels and still has lost none of its original charm or originality on its fully mastered version that sits on that LP. Grimes has once again SLEIGN me in 2015 like she did in 2012. A handy Top 100 list coming up in a bit..

January 1, 20169 yr Very much approve of Foals/Chemical Brothers/C Duncan in your top 10, and a number of other great songs and artists in there too. Going to have to investigate a few of the less well known songs that rate highly in your countdown (including Bicep, who I should know given that they're local to me).
