I am finding it really interesting hearing your thoughts on these contests Dan, especially as they're around the same time that I started so loving hearing someone else's perspective on the ones I have so many memories of.

(was never a fan of Colours, her Botanikka entry two contests later Miss You Paradise was far better for myself but Flares is still one of my favourite early entries that's remained sadly underground)

after 50 contests, Danaelanda looks back on its participation

Back to generic dance with female vocals- for Danaelanda this contest then, we sent the beautiful Christina Walls (she was apparently on Miss Universe Canada so that explains something) with 'Carry Me To Paradise', which would become my personal favourite to date - though of course I've sent lots of songs that outdo this since. Annoyingly this would give us another DNQ when it really shouldn't have. Because for whatever reason at the time only the top 14 would go through when there was an autoqualifier, leaving 29 songs in the final rather than 31 - and Christina Walls would finish... 15th. :| To this day I don't feel justice has been served from Ms Walls but I can't really care much now when Danaelanda has gone on to much greater things since.

So what did well then? The contest infamously finished on a tie, with Dragonette (representing Numayania (RIP) (yes, there was a time when Numayania were one of the big BJSC nations, how times have changed (I love brackets (brackets inside brackets)))) winning over iamamiwhoami (which was CLEARLY the better song) which annoyed many people, especially Pavel (who was behind Eledan) who has since claimed Dragonette to be his least favourite band ever ever.

Lindsey Stirling was introduced to Buzzjack in this contest too, with dubstep meets classical 'Crystallize' being a surprise top 5 (it would probably be an obvious winner now) for Zechonia (RIP). Stirling would later finish 2nd with 'Shatter Me' for Mulgracia. Paulina Rubio on her Nth appearance got Yuxhaaq (WHOOOOO) a #4 finish, her highest to date, despite it not being as good as the other Paulina Rubio entries of that year (she seemed to be quite popular in 2012 in the BJSC).

Ashton gave us a rare Ashton club anthem in the form of 'Mellow' which just missed the top 10, which I think is really brilliant and deserves the exposure in this thread. Also a future hit from Sebastian Ingrosso would be entered and finished 13th (if it was the non-Ryan Tedder version that was entered, it probably would have got my +12, now that is a tune). And it's worth noting that taking the wooden spoon this contest was Terra Avium, with an at the time little known band called Bastille.

Here were our votes;

+12 Eledan - iamamiwhoami "play" (2nd)
+10 Ashton - Nause "Mellow" (11th)
+08 Allecian - Bright Light Bright Light "Waiting For The Feeling" (20th)
+07 Scherzland - Sebastian Ingrosso & Alesso feat. Ryan Tedder "Calling (Lose My Mind)" (13th)
+06 Kluminican Republic - DJ Andi feat. Stella "Happiness" (17th)
+05 Ingermanlandia - Orbital "New France" (12th)
+04 Zechonia - Lindsey Stirling "Crystallize" (5th)
+03 PRoJ - Antoine Clamaran feat. Soraya "Feeling You" (26th)
+02 Kylienips - Morgan Page feat. Tegan & Sara "Body Work" (8th)
+01 Ramrynia - Emma Lewin "No Excuses" (6th)

Your contest numbers are a bit off in the last 3 posts! :P

(am reading through these now, always love a good BJSC write-up ~ I hope you don't give up on this too soon :kink:)

I know the pain of missing out on the final because of the number of qualifiers tho, I could have had a streak of 20 qualifiers in a row if the switch to 20 qualifiers per semi came in one contest earlier :eyes: x (although actually probably not because IIRC there was originally an error in the semi results and 'The Lom' was announced as being a bit lower than 20th so maybe it's a good thing lel)

Avicii - Dear Boy [feat. Karen Marie Ørsted]

To celebrate 50 contests, South Danaelanda have decided to send its own president to the contest. The Honourable Mr. President Sir Tim Bergling OBE MBE Multiple Time UK #1 Artiste And King Of Music is by far the biggest selling artist of all time in Danaelanda, and he also has the biggest selling song and album in Danaelanda ('Levels' and 'True' respectively). As a celebration of 'True' being the greatest album ever we have sent our favourite album track from it, a song that really deserved to be a single but alas it was never to be. 'Dear Boy' features vocals from MØ (who here is credited as her real name) so we knew sending this was putting us at risk of getting vetoed (as she was literally #1 in the UK a week ago) but it seems the mod panel have rightfully agreed to let it into the contest and for that we are thankful.

The radio edit is linked above, because we know how racist some of y'all are with long songs, but if you love that then I do very much recommend the full version which lasts for 8 minutes.

Much to our pleasure, Avicii has qualified for our fine half-nation. We probably would've thrown a Cor-Lupus style big hissy fit if he didn't so thanks for at least preventing that. The song hasn't done well without its haters though, with some criticising South Danaelanda for going very cheap for the 50th. We don't care though, cheap it may be but it's a song that really deserves to be heard by all of Buzzjack.

Not everything went swimmingly well though as some of our favourites slid from the final, including Ethanola who shockingly finished in 33rd (HOW EXACTLY?) as well as FARC who failed to vote on time leading to a deduction that got them their DNQ.

after 50 contests, Danaelanda looks back on its participation

BJSC 41 [February 2012], hosted by Fljótavík

No lie, this could have been the contest where we finally won. We had discovered Emma Hewitt 'Colours' on the Armada Music channel prior to the contest and had intended to send it... until Hitstastic posted saying he was going to send it but had been beaten to it, before we had even confirmed (so obviously I didn't attempt to confirm it and send Antillas instead - more on that later). Eventually we'd find out that Botanikka got to it first and they would go on to win the contest. There were no hard feelings though, we'd give it 12 points.

Here were our votes;

+12 Botanikka ✞ Emma Hewitt • Colours ♫ (1st)

:wub:

This is all interesting to me...I didn't know that both you and Batidas wanted 'Colours'...actually I had it as potential for BJSC 41 along with Ria Ritchie, which I ended sending first Ria and then Emma in 42 :D

So following from our last DNQ we decided to wing it with an instrumental trance song (Airsoul's 'Asia'). Of course that also flopped too, finishing in 18th in the semi-final with the same amount of points as another unjustified DNQ - Parachute Youth's 'Can't Get Better Than This' repping Terra Avium. This contest was not particularly memorable so the commentary will be short, and I didn't even truly love the song I had sent (it missed the top 20 of my personal chart). It was notable for being our first instrumental entry though and it wasn't our last either.

So what did well then? FKA Elëdan proved that the iamamiwhoami defeat had not got them down and they went and won the contest, with 'Hyperventilating' by Ronya. We weren't such fans of this entry though and gave it no points. FKA Kopečka would finish 2nd and Mdiče 3rd, both countries that have not been active in the contest for years. Our 12 points went to FSR Rontvia for a second time just outdoing another Emma Hewitt entry from Botanikka (not doing as well as the first though). I haven't listened to those in ages though and now I'd say my favourite of the contest (that actually made the final) is the Mdiče entry, Purity Ring's 'Obedear' (which I think would win if this contest was re-run). Shoutout also to Ayah Marar's 'Mind Controller' (Sandebörg).

Here were our votes;

+12. FSR Rontvia: Mr Little Jeans – Runaway (8th)
+10. Botanikka: Emma Hewitt - Miss You Paradise (28th)
+08. Umiiruka: Aubrey O'Day - Wrecking Ball (11th)
+07. Sandebörg: Ayah Marar - Mind Controller (24th)
+06. Daehun: Rebecca Stella - Give Me That O (6th)
+05. Mdiče: Purity Ring – Obedear (3rd)
+04. Ramrynia: Alex Saidac - Stay In This Moment (7th)
+03. Kingdom of Shadow: Azealia Banks - Hood Bitch (15th)
+02. Farahtyn: Chanée – Fallen (29th)
+01. Numayania: Bimbo Boy; Chart Music – Die From A Broken Heart (20th)

Who owns North Danaelanda? Is there a Danaelanda unification movement?

King Dan I owns both North and South Danaelanda, but at the moment the president of North Danaelanda is Tronald Dump, who has built a wall between the North and South.

It is a commonly regarded fact that South Danaelanda is the greater of the two nations, and we hope the North come to terms with this.

For this contest we would return to Romanian dance and this time it would work in our favour, with the country getting its first top 20 hit (18th). The song was one of our favourite BJSC entries of the time too with it topping the Danaelandan singles chart for one week. We were so in love with the vocals of Andreea Banica (the female in the song, I admit I was confused at the time as to who was who as they don't have common English names) that we'd send her again three contests later but not to any success. To say we were pleased that we finally qualified again after a whole year of either DNQing or not partaking would be an understatement, it felt great to finally have some sort of hit under our belt.

So what did well then? Woodkid won by a massive margin for Ingermanlandia with 'Run Boy Run' (scoring 200 points), widely recognised here as one of the "best" winners though I don't really get the mass hype for it myself. A future UK #1 in Icona Pop's 'I Love It' (with Charli XCX uncredited at the time) would settle for just 3rd for Ramrynia with Greenfroze finishing in 2nd. Our favourite entry here though had to be the Axwell remix of 'In My Mind', sent by Batidas which finished in 7th - showing that Buzzjack indeed does have taste. Another great entry here came from Kylienips who sent Gareth Emery's 'Concrete Angel', which got 7 points from us at the time but would receive more now.

Here were our votes;

+12 Batidas ▲ Ivan Gough & Feenixpawl feat. Georgi Kay ▲ In My Mind (Axwell Mix) (7th)
+10 Kluminican Republic ▲ Paulina Rubio ▲ All Around The World (19th)
+08 Sangria ▲ WTF! ▲ Da Bop (10th)
+07 Kylienips ▲ Gareth Emery feat. Christina Novelli ▲ Concrete Angel (20th)
+06 FYR Vojvodina-on-the-Wold ▲ Florrie ▲ To The End (5th)
+05 Aquafina ▲ Swedish Angels ▲ Your World Is Mine (31st)
+04 Tinnmark ▲ Alina Devecerski ▲ Flytta På Dej (25th)
+03 Ramrynia ▲ Icona Pop ▲ I Love It (3rd)
+02 Numayania ▲ TAL ▲ Le sens de la vie (11th)
+01 Kingdom of Shadow ▲ Rye Rye feat. Porcelain Black ▲ DNA (29th)

BJSC 88: Results Commentary

Top 25 finish for South Danaelanda

  • After South Danaelanda qualified by themselves for the first time without any help from the North, the country's president Avicii finished in 21st with help from MØ (Karen Marie Ørsted) on 'Dear Boy'. We scored 178 points, our second-highest points total of the year after of course 'Monody'.
  • When he was asked to report on his finish he replied "while I am slightly disappointed that I couldn't give our great nation a top 20 hit, I am pleased that we got many supporters of the song".
  • Support came from many places, including top marks from Ethanola, Triangledonia, Dobago and Usfland and 15 points from Medhlenia.
  • Only Fljotavik and #Numbers received more sets of top marks than we did, getting five each.
  • It is our fifth top 25 finish of the year but sadly 'Monody' remains our only top 20 hit of those.
  • It is also the second time we have finished in 21st following this year's 'Mirror Me' (Maceo Plex feat. C.A.R.).
The mighty alliance of N DNTN and #Numbers dominate
  • After being widely tipped to be this contest's winner, N DNTN finish in first with 394 points with Raye's 'Shhh'. It is their second and most successful victory.
  • #Numbers weren't even close pointswise, scoring 343 points but nonetheless finished 2nd with Yuri and Seohyn.
  • Jadakissnia also widely predicted to win didn't quite make it but got their best finish to date, in 3rd with MssingNo.
  • Cadelicia get another big hit and so does Unovia to finish the top 5.
  • Other top 10 success come from Syndare and Singerpurear who return to the top 10, Pupok who get yet another smash, Fljotavik who brings Agnes Obel back to the top 10 (although eight places lower than she previously was when Batidas won with her), and Terra Avium who finishes the top 10 with our favourite song of the contest (minus Avicii).
  • New Lexico recycle BB Diamond from a few contests ago but don't do so well with her. The country finish in 13th behind Altyr Muunilinst (12th) and D'yermak'er (11th, and thus winning the battle of the X Factor contestants (not much of a battle anyway, Bellamia finishes 24th with their entry))
  • Botanikka send a great song from ALMA but get a slightly disappointing finish, only 17th. We gave the song 13 points.
  • Our 15 points went to Dobago who also disappointed with a 30th finish.
  • The country formerly known as Summericia get their highest finish to date, 25th. One would hope a top 20 for them comes soon if they keep up this new good entry quality.
  • Comebacks from Florina and Mulgracia finish mid-table in 19th and 23rd. Lomaja get a respectable debut position of 29th for their k-pop entry.
  • The autoqualifiers don't perform particularly well. Slutland finish 34th and the host nation Cor Lupus finish in just 38th.
  • Medhelnia finish last and are the only country to not pass 100 points. Lol.

50 Contests: A Review
after 50 contests, Danaelanda looks back on its participation

BJSC 46 [July 2012], hosted by Ingermanlandia

http://www.codrosu.ro/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Oana-Tache-Take-Control-Cover-300x300.jpg

Danaelanda were back to continue their path of success found with our then-current niche of Romanian dancepop, sending singer Oana Tache to the contest. It didn't quite work out for us though as we finished in 17th in the semi-final and would be the start of yet another long run of DNQs. We truly were the Flynnonda of our day. Except not quite as unfortunate (:kink:). Using the power of hindsight though this wasn't that great of an entry and it's one that Danaelanda tend to shove to the back end of our history books and own entry rankings. It certainly is a lot different to the sound of Danaelanda today. Annoyingly our former flop entrants Radio Killer were entered here and actually qualified this time, they should've qualified when *we* sent them :angry:

So what did well then? Aeroche got their first win with Trentemøller just one point ahead of the runner-up, #00274E who sent Isa, which in turn was one point ahead of the second runner-up, Umiiruka who sent Charli XCX before she was famous (no pun intended). Out of those three the only song I gave points to was Isa's 'Bomb' (received one point) but it's probably my least favourite of the three now oops. Also in the top 10 were Asian acts Girls' Generation and Namie Amuro who we'd be seeing a lot of over the years. And just missing the top 10 was a producer you may know called Zedd. BJSC gets the big acts before they become big y'know. Also shout out to the ever iconic 'Cash, Diamond Rings, Swimming Pools' which got 7 points from us and finished in the topp 15.

Here were our votes;

12 ∙ Herzebania ∙ Phase Spin & Matty G feat. Jolene - Let You Go (12th)
10 ∙ FSR Rontvia ∙ ATB feat Ramona Nerra - Never Give Up (27th)

"is it all in my head?"

For our next entry following Avicii was always going to be tricky, but we think Steve James has what it takes!

James is just 18 years old but is already a very successful DJ. Currently on tour supporting Martin Garrix, Matoma and Vanic playing mostly to the US where he is from (to be more specific he comes from Los Angeles), he debuted with 'Renaissance' featuring Clairity which racked up over 11 million streams on Spotify and for his second release 'In My Head' the vocals are done by RKCB (also from L.A. - not much else known about him/them(?)). In the three months it's been out it has got 3 million Spotify streams and a million YouTube plays (upload by MrSuicideSheep above), not quite as big as the previous single but we think it's better. Give it a listen and vote for us!
