I dare say more people would know The Man Who Sold the World than Drive-In Saturday.

We're basically trying to find Buzzjack's favourite Bowie tracks but we can't really rate every song he ever released for obvious reasons.

I say include songs that are generally know even if they weren't singles or charting singles.

Ps Taylor Jago... I hope you don't mind us debating this - I think we all appreciate you running it, regardless of songs chosen! :D

Poor Taylor. I don't think anyone could include EVERYTHING first off.

I think Suffragette City and MWSTW (maybe magic dance too, to represent his work in the iconic film) are the only two that *need* to be added now, since Cat People, Laz and Changes are added. It's just too much either. I'm all for shaving off some of the remixes at the end to make it slightly shorter.

Was Suffragette City not a single?

I don't want to meddle too much but how many singles/key tracks are missing this way? Severin, would you know?

Suffragette City was a b-side/album track only.

Same with Ziggy Stardust, Man Who Sold The World, Station To Station.

Hang On To Yourself was released under the Arnold Corns moniker and failed to chart

Any others?

The main tracks that are absent for me are...

All The Young Dudes

Suffragette City

Slow Burn

New Killer Star

Looking For Water

Blackstar

The Man Who Sold The World

The Stars (Are Out Tonight)

Love Is Lost (Remix)

Shadow Man

I'm Afraid Of Americans

...but that's purely because I'm quite fond of them, I can understand if I'm trying to be a little more objective about it why they're not in there...

ATYD - album outtake only

SC - album track

Slow Burn - U.S. single only

New Killer Star - U.S. single only

LFW - non single

Blackstar - Only charted on Fri

TMWSTW - album only

TS(AOT) - UK #102

LIS (remix) - 12" only release - failed to chart

Shadow Man - Probable Ziggy outtake, recorded for the aborted Toy album 2001

I'm Afraid Of American - U.S. single

Oh and Magic Dance was a U.S. single only

I don't know whether this would run but what I am going to do (eventually!) with a Beatles rate is have everyone give their top 10. Then the 40 songs that appear the most times would be selected for the rate. I know this adds another level to the rate but with so many essential songs that were not singles this seems the best way to do it given he's got such a vast catalogue.

Rating Bowie will always be tough. Most of his weak songs are superior to other act's decent ones, hence they are rated in comparison to his work. 3 11's is not enough!!

I am really surprised that Severin gave an eleven to Cat People. :o

Why?

It's great. At least the single version is. The album version is terrible

To be fair there were about 8 tracks I could have given the third 11 to but I figured that needed the boost more and I was playing it in the car today.

As a separate competition, (and this is entirely optional), you can name your 12 favourite songs not on the list as so:

+12: Favourite

+11: 2nd favourite

+10: 3rd favourite

+9: 4th favourite

+8: 5th favourite

+7: 6th favourite

+6: 7th favourite

+5: 8th favourite

+4: 9th favourite

+3: 10th favourite

+2: 11th favourite

+1: 12th favourite

The top 10 will be revealed during the results.

+12: Five Years

+11: Time

+10: Slip Away

+9: Aladdin Sane

+8: Watch That Man

+7: Station To Station

+6: Queen Bitch

+5: Big Brother

That seems like a reasonable proposal. Thanks for doing this, TJ.

Oh I think I've only ever heard the album version... which is the single version? The 6 minute plus one?

edit... presumably the 4 minutes version!

Yeah it's 4:13 long

Darn, it's album only everywhere!

I don't hate the other version as such, it's just not what I expected you to give an 11 to for some reason. There's no logic or quality involved, just a presumption of tastes.

Tarantino knows how good it is!

I can see why you wouldn't expect it. I've been fairly clear in my comparative disapproval of 80's Bowie but it is also the decade where I first discovered him and this came out not long after the Scary Monsters album which was the first I ever had so I'm kind of fond of it.

80s Bowie was generally a mess but Scary Monsters and Let's Dance are so good! (I know the latter divides opinions a lot)

Scary Monsters IS great, but for me Let's Dance has 3 good tracks and they're the singles.
