BJSC 85~

*************************

Medhelnia have spent the last few months entering song after unsuccessful song after unsuccessful song. It's been irritating to say the least. Entry after entry after entry I've been extremely emotionally invested in and hyped up, only to get my hopes brought down again and again with low scores and poor finishes. To be quite blunt, at this rate, Medhelnia will certainly not be remembered for being the best new nation of the year. We've entered two dance tracks to the main competition, one with more of a pop influence, and one that just flopped so doesn't even deserve any more info being told about it. We've also entered into three spin-offs - all have been began with extremely high hopes, all have ended with the country feeling dejected. You get the idea. Medhelnia have basically, in summary, been a pile of s***.

However a change may be on the horizon. Our track for BJSC 85 has pop influences, a slightly electric (lol) beat, and strong indie vibes throughout which create a stunning mix of alternative indie and blissful summery pop. Many know what it is, many will have heard it for different reasons, but all we can tell you until the confirmations thread opens is that BJSC 85 is going to be the potential end to the DNQ streak, the competition where Medhelnia potentially shine and finally show their true colours.

Am I right? This remains to be seen. And I've wrote far too much.

Yeah a lot of the time it's pot luck, I've been unlucky too :heehee: sometimes it's "wrong semi syndrome" which is just a shame, but on the other hand the more entries you send, the more likely you are to get a hit with one :o I wouldn't take BJSC too seriously though.

Can't wait to hear your song - you've been so supportive of me in what will be my first contest so I hope you do extremely well this time! :)

Yeah that's it, I don't really take it that seriously but I feel sometimes the competition is so intense - like people actually have genuine expectations as to what people choose and vote for and I think if this element of pressure didn't exist in BJSC we'd see more variety, like for example you're probably expected to enter something from the dance genre, Dan too etc., meaning it's kind of hard to leave your genre people ascosiate you with.

I can't really explain it, I just do it as a bit of fun and when I don't have anything decent lined up I won't enter, but I feel as though some people really take it seriously and try and pick things that they'll do well with and songs that they are expected to enter, and tbh I couldn't be more arsed as to how well I do, but for this competition I've managed to find something that is probably going to (hopefully) do well, and I love myself, so that's why I'm hyping it etc.

You probably still don't understand it, but what I'm trying to get at here is that people enter songs they know will do well, not what they love themselves which irritates me as it's gone from being a competition of songs entrants love, to songs they think people will love in some cases.

Soz if this doesn't make any sense aaaa

Mdh, you only debuted in 83! You have only DNQ'd twice. I went from 5 DNQ's to a win followed by 12 more Q's. Keep your chin up!

I'm associated with rock and I leave that all the time. And I always encourage variety. I've tried to make my entries varied for years.

That's not to say your rant doesn't have some merit, some people get wholly into the competitive side, but as far as I'm aware everyone does enter songs that they're very invested in. Which makes the emotions involved stronger. It is worth thinking that people do enter songs with their hearts, we all trust each other to do that as proving against it is impossible and there's no evidence to suggest it.

Best of luck to you, you will qualify soon I am sure.

I'm sur you'll do well soon enough. I threathened to quite after BJSC80 as well and afterthat I gathered 3 top 3's in a row, so maybe this complaining will help you out as well
I am sure you will do well MDH, even though I have two DNQ'S in the last two contests just like you I think, just got to keep trying, Good Luck :D

Yeah lets hope so :D I guess everyone has their time eventually

I definitely always try to send something that'll do well but it's never a song I'm not fully invested in! (except a few times in the spin-offs, but they don't really count for much)

I have tried variety in the past but to varying degrees of success, sending TheFatRat got me my best position to date but I also nearly came last in the semi once with something I wouldn't normally send. I guess people send (sub)genres that they're known for most of the time to be safe (and I admit I do this too - this month's entry couldn't be more Danaelanda if it tried!!!).

I'm sure you'll get a qualifier soon anyway, in Danaelanda's early days we gave up after DNQing once (with our 2nd entry, we were fortunate enough to qualify with entry #01) before returning a few months later and never left since :D don't lose hope like we did.

I can honestly say that I know where mdh is coming from, there have been times where I felt that I was just gonna up and out from the contest (most notably when Pixel Fix DNQ'd, but that was for other reasons other than the DNQ).

Variety is normally a good thing but it's also a good thing when you send something that seems to attach to your heart. I think my best example (and best moment) would be sending New Politics. They're a band that I've loved for a pretty long time and since I was in Rome during the first day of confirmations, I ended up picking them despite having 15 potentials for that month. Needless to say that became a breakthrough for me.

Keep sending what you love but keep being competitive. Those who peak too early end up giving up too early. All this only means you have something to work for.

Yes I think the best way to prepare for a DNQ is with a song you love, or at least for me anyway, although I'm not sure this is a common opinion. I'm not too sure of sending a song I don't like that much and to then have it DNQ is just pointless really. I mean I could send a song I think would do really well but not myself loving it that much, it would be good to slay of course but I think I would rather continue to send songs I love and hopefully I can do well again like with Ghost and Rush eventually and if that means I have to go through a line of DNQs then I'll take that too

I'm sur you'll do well soon enough. I threathened to quite after BJSC80 as well and afterthat I gathered 3 top 3's in a row, so maybe this complaining will help you out as well

 I should try that tbh

i got my first win with a song that i confirmed out of COMPLETE panic (i'm talking v last minute), it was 5 years old at the time when i sent it and no-one (not even i!) thought it would win, but i'd grown up with it and loved it so u should honestly just send something u can get rly behind

Thanks again guys for more advice :D I'm just gonna go for it this time tbh, not caring what people think, if it flops it flops at least I like it

Yes this is exactly the attitude I have with my entries :kink: hope you can do well all the same.

BJSC 85 ~ PARADE OF LIGHTS - FEELING ELECTRIC

It's different. It's indie :o, it's summery glorious upbeat pop with some great lyrics that belong on Facebook profile pictures. It's the best we could do. MEDHELNIA 85. Tbh I'm being overoptimistic but I really hope y'all like this!

Medhelnia have spent the last few months entering song after unsuccessful song after unsuccessful song. It's been irritating to say the least. I think I see the issue here-

DON'T GET YOUR HOPES UP TOO MUCH. Take it from the absolute best, I used to have optimism at one point- but those filthy BJSC voters (the ruthless animals that they are) have since ripped it right out of me. There is now a black pit in my stomach, where my optimism used to reside

(haven't heard your new entry yet though so your high hopes may well be justified in this case, but i heed you this warning solely for your benefit!!!)

(but no seriously you'll be fine~ not everyone strikes gold right away)
