Sorry guys, my laptop died last night in the middle of this and I had left my charger at work.

It's clear why Kala is so far down - many of its supporters failed to contribute to this countdown!

It goes to show that every vote counts.

^^

These are all great and I either forgot about them or thought they wouldn't be eligible for genre reasons.

I think the thing with Kala is that it sounds a bit...well 2007 to me. I rarely listen to it these days any more. But it's a good album.

a bit 2007?! in what way?

what is it that makes it so dented to you because it's a record that really transcends genres, influences and looks at globalisation etc

if anything it's as relevant now as it ever was 10 years ago

It almost feels like we should do this again seeing as several people didn't vote and some of your forgot M.I.A albums :o :o

#notdedicated

Oh well, I got an album in at number 40 - don't expect to get any more in!

'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' would've been my number one, but I didn't think it'd be eligible, haha. Always hard to define 'alternative', Kanye's obviously not indie or rock at all, but then he's a pitchfork fave so it's a bit ambiguous.

Mostly because of my own taste in music has changed so much in ten years

Seeing as the Lovechart results will be delayed I will be kicking off here in a while - gotta get something to eat first :D

Some info - only 14 of that Top 50 from 2012 made this top 40.

Two Suns is the second studio album by English recording artist Bat for Lashes, released on 3 April 2009 by The Echo Label and Parlophone. The album was produced by Khan herself and David Kosten (who also worked on her debut album Fur and Gold), and features collaborations with members of Yeasayer and Scott Walker. Two Suns was recorded in segments in California, New York City, London, Brighton and Wales.[3]

Upon its release, Two Suns was met with positive reviews from most critics. Additionally, it was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize in 2009, Khan's second nomination after Fur and Gold in 2007. On 31 July 2009, Two Suns was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), for shipments of 100,000 copies in the United Kingdom.

I really took to this album and it was my album of 2009. Daniel was captivating and Two Planets and Pearl's Dream were standouts. There was oceans of Kate Bush influences and I always felt that this album was much better than the album that generally overshadowed it that year - Florence's Lungs.

Blackstar (stylised as ★) is the twenty-fifth and final studio album by English singer David Bowie. It was released worldwide through Bowie's ISO Records label on 8 January 2016, Bowie's 69th birthday. Bowie died two days after its release. Co-producer Tony Visconti described the album as Bowie's intended swan song and a "parting gift" for his fans before his death.[6]

Blackstar was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching the number one spot in a number of countries in the wake of Bowie's death, and becoming Bowie's first and only album to reach number one on the Billboard 200 album chart in the U.S.

Bowie recorded the album in the midst of an ongoing battle with cancer. His illness was only known by those very close to him and that remained so until the news of his death became public, two days after the album's release. It became apparent immediately after that many lyrics seem to come from a man who knows death is near. Like The Next Day, recording of this album took place in secret at The Magic Shop and Human Worldwide Studios in New York City. Bowie began writing and making demos for songs that appear on Blackstar as soon as sessions for The Next Day concluded. The two songs that appear on Blackstar that were previously released, "Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)" and "'Tis a Pity She Was a Whore", were re-recorded for Blackstar, including new saxophone parts played on the latter song by Donny McCaslin (replacing parts Bowie played on the original release). The title of the latter derives from the title 'Tis Pity She's a Whore, a play by John Ford, an English dramatist of the 17th century. McCaslin and the rest of the jazz group recorded their parts in the studio over a period of about one week a month from January to March 2015, and were unaware of Bowie's declining health. The song "Lazarus" was included in Bowie's Off-Broadway musical of the same name.

The youngest album in this chart - it's less than 3 months old, and sadly the only one from a person who is no longer with us.

From the second I heard the title-track back in November I was entranced by the complete genius on display and for the first time I was anticipating a Bowie album.

Each song has it's own character and it's on style hooks. The tone varies and it's quite an eclectic album.

I'm hoping that it is nominated and potentially wins this year's Mercury Prize.

Intimacy is the third studio album by British indie rock band Bloc Party. It was recorded in two weeks at several locations in London and Kent during 2008 and was produced by Jacknife Lee and Paul Epworth. Inspired by the release options available in the Internet age, the band members made the album available for purchase on their website as a digital download on 21 August 2008. Minimal promotion was undertaken in the UK. The record was released in compact disc form on 24 October 2008, with Wichita Recordings as the primary label. It peaked at number 8 on the UK Albums Chart and entered the Billboard 200 in the United States at number 18.

Bloc Party wanted to create an album that further distanced the band from the traditional rock set-up by incorporating more electronic elements and unconventional musical arrangements. As the record's title suggests, its tracks are about personal relationships and are loosely based on one of frontman Kele Okereke's break-ups in 2007. Three songs were released as singles: "Mercury", "Talons", and "One Month Off"; the first two tracks entered the UK Top 40. Intimacy was generally well received by critics. Reviewers often focused on its rush-release and central theme, and considered them either bold steps or poor choices.

An even more complex album than its predecessor. Mercury was a poor indicator of what was to be in store. An album of unimaginable strength of song writing, vocals, styles, guitar playing and programming. I really cannot stress how great this album is - even Ares and Mercury have something going for them, even though they are the weakest of the tracks.

The clarity that they achieve on Talons is the work of a band much older. Kele's vocals and melodies are seriously accomplished. One of my favourite albums ever.

Zephyrus

Glad to see Bowie feature, plus the Bat For Lashes album is good too and was close to making my list. Pearl's Girl remains my favourite of hers.

Untrue is the second studio album by British electronic music producer Burial. Released on 5 November 2007 through Hyperdub, the album was produced by Burial from 2006 to 2007 using digital audio editing software. Whilst retaining several elements of his past work, including his debut album Burial (2006), Untrue marked a development in Burial's sound through its more prominent utilisation of pitch-shifted and time-stretched vocal samples. The album also contains influences of Burial's own musical tastes, most notably the UK garage and hardcore music genres.

The album received rave reviews from music critics, who commended Burial's production and use of samples to create a unique atmosphere. In addition, several critics cited the album as an improvement over his previous releases. Untrue later appeared in several publications' lists of the year's best albums and received nominations for the Mercury Prize and the Shortlist Music Prize. It charted at numbers 57 and 58 in Belgium and the United Kingdom respectively and produced two singles, "Archangel" and "Ghost Hardware". Since its release, Untrue has been viewed as a landmark album in the dubstep genre.

Bearing one of the most original sounds of the past decade, like The XX, Burial made music to be listened to at night. But instead of the intimate songs of XX, Untrue lives in a dark world where half remembered vocal clips float through the either, where rain is only ever a few miles away and distant night trains bellow mournfully. While it featured more hooks than it's predecessor Burial it still was a world away from pop music. The dread of mid-90s trip hop was there but the magnificent detail of the production made it a much more 00s album.
