Far too low for #2! At times it is my favourite of the three :o Jessie's moment to shine with 'When She Loved Me' is the single moment that makes me cry more than any other scene in any film  beautiful film and now the remaining two need to steal victory!

Below Monsters Inc and Up.. lmao.

Great top 7, but TS2 is far better than Buzzjack is making out. I don't think any Toy Story film would fall short of top 5/6 for me.

7. Up (2009) - 8.555555556 (More 11s)

Up, Up & Away: 11 (Slick), 10 (Joe, SamJudd, Jonjo, Ultraviolence1989, Chez Wombat, Dandy*)
Down: 0 (bipolar angel), 6 (Josh)

Rotten Tomatoes: 98%
IMDb: 8.3/10

Plot Summary: Carl Fredrickson is a little boy and a dreamer who idolizes the adventurer Charles Muntz. When he meets Ellie, who also worships Muntz, they become close friends. However, Charles Muntz falls into disgrace, accused of forging the skeleton of the monster of Paradise Falls. He travels in his blimp to South America to bring the monster back alive, but is never seen again. Eventually Carl grows up and marries Ellie. They promise each other that they would travel together to Paradise Falls and build a house there. Many years later, Ellie dies and Carl, who's lonely, refuses to move from their house despite the offers of the owner of a construction company. When Carl accidentally hits a worker that damaged his mailbox, he is sentenced to move to a retirement home. However, he uses many balloons to float his house in order to travel to Paradise Falls. Adventure ensues.

My thoughts: Aah, where to begin with this, such a beautiful, soaring epic of a film. Directed by Pete Docter (still yet to put a foot wrong in his Pixar directed films), Up continued the quite daring and experimental take Pixar were doing in the latter half of the 00s, and it definitely worked to their favour, as Up was another roaring success and became only the second animated film in history after Beauty & The Beast to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture.

Up is a bit of an unconventional story for Pixar - it's protagonist being an elderly man is representative of this, an elderly protagonist is particularly rare in films and even more so animated films. I remember when I saw the trailers with an old man and a house of balloons, I was a bit stumped as to what on Earth they were trying to do, but it works so well here and is definitely a risk paid off, as it shows us a unique approach to the film, which just couldn't be done by someone younger in the main role. Up is simply divine in so many ways, the opening five minutes are one of the most perfectly done, sad and poignant sequences in animation - a life and relationship and sad death established so quickly and instantly pulling us in is a trademark to Pixar's ability to tug on the heartstrings. And the rest of the film definitely contains just as much heart and emotion - taking on the classic adventure genre, but Carl as the protagonist reframes it in the sense that it is a 'last' adventure/ultimate dream adds to the heart and urgency of the story (the theme of death and nearing the end of life is not sugar coated here, it's a sensitive theme that's handled extremely well). Carl's main journey of course is gradually forming a new 'family' who he is hostile to at first but soon learns they are just like him - Russell who is eager, but we learn has family issues and is something of a social outcast, Dug, the only one of Muntz's dogs wanting to be 'good' and Kevin, the rare bird. They all serve for some comedic antics together, but ultimately resemble society's outcasts in every day and how they can unite and prove their worth despite their differences (and indeed, the society 'everyman' or idolised hero is portrayed as villainous here). This subject is tackled a lot in films and children's films, but this feels fresh - mainly due again to the variety of characters and situations of them that are brought together.

It really can't be said enough how much heart there is in Up, it's so so deep and different for a children's film, that it will moves me to tears every time  And outside of that, there's still a sense of fun. So many old fashioned air fighting action going on as well and the animation, particularly with the balloon sequence, is particularly noteworthy in this case. If anything it's too low, you are dead to me bipolar angel :P

Choice scenes:

If you do not cry at that, you are stone cold.

Choice quotes:

Carl Fredricksen: Hey, let's play a game. It's called "See Who Can Be Quiet the Longest".
Russell: Cool! My mom loves that game!

Dug: I was hiding under your porch because I love you. Can I come in? (<3)

Carl Fredricksen: This is crazy. I finally meet my childhood hero and he's trying to kill us. What a joke.
Dug: Hey, I know a joke! A squirrel walks up to a tree and says, "I forgot to store acorns for the winter and now I am dead." Ha! It is funny because the squirrel gets dead.

Charles Muntz: Adventure is out there!

That 0 from bipolar angel takes the piss. Up is utterly fantastic through and through (NOT JUST THE OPENING).
Up <3 shouldn't be above Toy Story 2 :kink: but what a fantastic adventure! Totally unique and while it goes drag for a bit towards the middle/end the goodness from it more than makes up for that.

6. WALL-E (2008) - 8.794117647

A sprouting herb: 11 (Joe, Lee Wallace, Johnkm), 10 (Jonjo, Ultraviolence1989, Chez Wombat, Dandy*)
Endless garbage: 4 (Emily Haines), 6 (HarryEzra)

Rotten Tomatoes: 96%
IMDb: 8.4/10

Plot Summary: In a distant, but not so unrealistic, future where mankind has abandoned earth because it has become covered with trash from products sold by the powerful multi-national Buy N Large corporation, WALL-E, a garbage collecting robot has been left to clean up the mess. Mesmerized with trinkets of Earth's history and show tunes, WALL-E is alone on Earth except for a sprightly pet cockroach. One day, EVE, a sleek (and dangerous) reconnaissance robot, is sent to Earth to find proof that life is once again sustainable. WALL-E falls in love with EVE. WALL-E rescues EVE from a dust storm and shows her a living plant he found amongst the rubble. Consistent with her "directive", EVE takes the plant and automatically enters a deactivated state except for a blinking green beacon. WALL-E, doesn't understand what has happened to his new friend, but, true to his love, he protects her from wind, rain, and lightning, even as she is unresponsive. One day a massive ship comes to reclaim EVE, but WALL-E, out of love or loneliness, hitches a ride on the outside of the ship to rescue EVE. The ship arrives back at a large space cruise ship, which is carrying all of the humans who evacuated Earth 700 years earlier.

(Sorry IMDb's 'summaries' were all stupidly overly descriptive here)

My thoughts: Without a doubt the most daring, unique and experimental film Pixar have ever done, and indeed summed up very nicely the interesting direction Pixar were going in in the late 2000s. I didn't entirely 'get' it at first (I do believe this would be something of a challenge for very young children, not the least because of the themes, more on that later), but a few watches later and I definitely can see why it is the joint highest rated Pixar film on IMDb. How daring it is can be seen in just the film's opening - there is no dialogue at all and no particular plot established, just a trash robot doing routine checks on a desolate wasteland that we soon learn is our planet in the future. It would be a challenge to make a character that can't speak and traditionally can't FEEL as our main protagonist, but any doubts about this are soon put to rest and the scenes with WALL-E storing the plant, longingly watching the Hello Dolly scenes (Live action film fuses with animation quite seamlessly here, something that Pixar hadn't attempted prior to this), his friend cockroach and even just his vacant expression instantly make him make a big connection with the audience watching. As well as Sci-Fi, Romance hasn't always been a genre that Pixar had focused on much unless as a small side plot and the romance between WALL-E & EVE is so perfectly and adorably represented here and while I feel they made EVE a tad TOO personality filled for a machine, it's still a wonderful contrast of opposites and a brilliant underlying theme for the action that follows.

The second half of the film is very much an in-your-face action-Sc-Fi adventure as WALL-E finds the mothership and continues to protect her. It's not as finely done and intriguing as the scenes set on Earth, but it's still very enjoyable and the trademark sense of fun, that leads to an all round fight with humanity's future at stakes. In purely macrocosmic terms, it's the highest stakes battle in a Pixar film yet and is definitely handled with the right amount of drama and robot fighting action you'd hope for. Of course, the central romance still being prevalent through this, including a wonderful scene where the two robots float around the stars. There is of course a darker sense to this as the film does attempt to relay a sense of worry of where mankind is heading with these fat lazy slobs, completely reliant on technology, adverts and hoverchairs to even get up, that are supposed to resemble us. It is the standard Sci-Fi critique of the impact of technology and consumerism really, including the twist where certain machines aren't proved to be as much man's friend as they thought, but it is quite well done and certainly not covered before - the desolate uninhabitable state of the Earth only further cements this message, the film also cleverly uses of nostalgia such as old films and candles and even plant shoots are presented as beacons of hope. You could possibly write a whole thesis on themes of WALL-E but it's midnight on Thursday so I don't really have the energy to go into them. Above all, it's certainly tough for a children's film to do all this and make it accessible to all ages and the film deserves credit for managing both halves excellently. Overall, certainly a film that will always stand out in Pixar's back catalogue as a sign they can still be incredibly innovative after all this time.

Choice scenes:
- The entire first sequence with WALL-E inspecting the trash heaps and standard earth items (like a bra mistaken for glasses) is so hypnotising and brilliant, the best scenes are definitely when he is watching the Hello Dolly sequences and seeing the light in his eyes when we realise his inner desires.
- WALL-E becoming unresponsive and not recognising EVE after the mothership lands on Earth at the end, and then the moment of realisation is so... (it's Pixar, you have to expect one tearjerking scene)

Choice quotes:
- Not really any. Just like it's protagonists, this film is less reliant on dialogue so much stronger for it's visuals and actions.

I'm glad Wall-E and TS2 are out, Toy Story isn't perfect and that's the weak link of the trilogy, and I wasn't overly taken with Wall-E THAT much because I couldn't relate that much to the characters, but to be fair though, I've only watched it once.

Up is beautiful, perhaps the best plot of any Pixar movie because of how, ahem, grounded in reality the setup is. Very watchable film and filled with some brilliant humour and emotion.

Both in my top 3 Pixar films of all time. 'Up' is extremely cute. A great character driven movie. 'Wall-E' is just astonishing from start to finish for me. Such a unique and daring concept, so beautifully executed. Probably my favourite Pixar film, visually. It's amazing how Pixar can make you feel so much feelings to something so inhuman.
I love Wall E so much. It's such a special film. It's so clever how Pixar managed to create such an emotional connection with robots that cant speak. Truly masterful.

5. got stodybsbjng (1995) - 9.25

Smart people: 11 (HausofKubrick, Chez Wombat), 10 (Joe, princess_lotti, Slick, SamJudd, HarryEzra, Jacob Alan, Ultraviolence1989, Dandy*)

Dead to me forever -____: 5 (bipolar angel), 6.5 (Josh)

Rotten Tomatoes: 100%

IMDb: 8.3/10

Plot Summary (though I'm not sure why you'd need this as I'm pretty sure you've all seen it ;o): A little boy named Andy loves to be in his room, playing with his toys, especially his doll named "Woody". But, what do the toys do when Andy is not with them, they come to life. Woody believes that he has life (as a toy) good, until Andy's mother gives him an action figure known as Buzz Lightyear, who does not believe that he is a toy, and quickly becomes Andy's new favourite toy. Woody, who is now consumed with jealousy, tries to get rid of Buzz. Then, both Woody and Buzz are now lost. They must find a way to get back to Andy before he moves without them, but they will have to pass through a ruthless toy killer, Sid Phillips.

My thoughts: Well, this is a turn out for the books. Despite finishing second last time and in many of the polls conducted on here, this time, Toy Story can't go higher than 5th, with even one of it's sequels beating it out. I'm...not sure what happened here, and I'm very disappointed in you all as this is in my eyes BY FAR still Pixar's golden film and 5th is NOT GOOD ENOUGH :(

Sigh, well there is little else to say here really. The film that started it all for Pixar as well as the first ever CGI animated film and one who's visuals, tone and style influenced animation for decades to come and is still widely regarded as a bonafide classic up to this day (and was recently declared the top animated film of all time in a Channel 5 countdown, authority!!11). I have a lot of personal memories of this film and it is my favourite ever film and never fails to cheer me up when I rewatch it. There is no amount of essay writing or choice quotes/scenes (the whole film k) I can do to justify this film so I will instead post a load of gifs for your pleasure:
