Great song. So, Sky becomes one of those dance songs that was kept at number 2 by another dance song. It doesn't happen very often. - I think 7 times in the 90s.

I've just had a look at what did keep it off, and I won't spoil it here but it's a very good dance choon that very much deserved #1 over Sonique :dancing:

Without looking, I think it was

'Lady (Hear Me Tonight)'

that kept 'Sky' off the top spot.

I thought you wouldnt like this since you said you dont like dance songs that are about the vocal a lot and this is definitely about the vocal.

Yes when I was younger I did like this it wasnt too hard dance (which I reaoly disliked at the time). It is such an iconic memorable song. My mum liked it too so it has that crossover appeal which may expain its long chart run for the time.

There was no really trance in the charts by 2002. IIO brought in an era where the music took second place to a female vocal and in 2002 many of the so called trance songs were really bland dance pop with a weedy lead vocal from a woman.

True for most of the higher-charting stuff, but there's still some brilliant tracks in 2002 to the point where I rate the year higher for dance than '01.

,
and (admittedly with a female vocal track) Take Me Away Into The Night are all spellbinding for me, sadly I don't think we'll be seeing any of them in this thread.

That song you mentioned in the spoiler is dreadful imo, really dislike it.

Having failed to resist the urge to check I have to say Sky is far superior. Not that the song in question is bad but I definitely feel it's quite overrated & not one I generally return to.

'Take Me Away (Into The Night)' is absolutely brilliant, I'm surprised it missed the top 10 actually as it was one of the best trance songs from its era.

Here's another good underrated trance song from 2002, it only made #47.

They are good. Take Me Away, in particular.

Why all the hate for female vocals? 2002 to 2006 was all about the big female vocals in dance whether it was trance around 2002 to 2003 or house from 2004 to 2006 and it worked well I think. I know Kelly Llorenna, Rachel McFarlane, Tara McDonald etc. may not be to everyones taste but I think they did well on the songs. Better them than Luciana or Princess Superstar in late 2006 to 2007 which is when things got really bad in dance music imo.

If the songs in the spoilers is correct then I love it. I prefer it to it's main rival which hit number 1 a few weeks earlier.

Because of shite like this

The ultimate in featureless, bland, weedy vocal where one is far more likely to end up asleep than "entranced".

See also True Love Never Dies, Dee Dee's Forever.

I blame Silence and Rapture for influencing all this bilge.

But that is often the way with dance music genres. Sooner or later they put a woman singing on it and a huge hit ensues.

DJ Sammys best song is Why because he uses the original vocal for that. It is still is not great by 2005 standards though imo.

So you don't mind the big female vocals like from Kelly Llorenna (I know she went too dance pop in 2003 though :( ) etc.

EDIT I see what you said about True Love Never Dies, I disagree I think that was a great tune and while the vocal on Heaven is terrible imo, the one on TLND cannot be described as weedy.

So I am assuming you didnt like the female disco vocal led house of 2004 to 2006 either then?

I do. I generally like my dance music instrumental or with well chosen samples. 2002 just reminds me of those CluBLAND cds when dance music just lost all its edge,

Jesus...I had never heard Why. That is criminal. The pace of the vocals is all over the place.

It's not weedy. It's just not very appealing to me. I cannot even remember dance music from the mid 00s because after 2001 it became fairly uninteresting to me.

So you didnt like the female vocals in house in the 2000s either like in the Shapeshifters songs etc. :o

I am guessing you liked the dance music of 2013 to 2015 :o ?

I could certainly manage without it. I'm not really a soulful vocal fan in dance music.

Not particularly. The last mainstream dance song I liked was Avicii's Levels.

What abour Rinse and Repeat, Rhymes and Chunky they didnt have soulful vocals.

(My idea of dance hell all three of these btw) :(
