Broken Bones sounds so modern and relevant because ofthe prominent organ bassline (which had a revival last year).

 

We have another organ basdline house tune near the end of 03 that I remember a lot better and also still sounds very relevant.

Yes it is not my favourite...for a more interesting 2003 funky house song, this one made number 16 during one of the weeks of the mammoth dance number 1 run of our next track. I only discovered it recently....but this the kind of epic production funky house should have imo, not the Make Luv type. :dance:

 

Broken Bones was a #1 in my personal chart (as was You're A Superstar and, by the looks of it, the next entry in this countdown). Seems there was more great dance around in 2003 than I recalled. Their album was decent too, but these two hits were the clear highlights.

Yes 2003 was a good year for dance in the charts, although by the end of the year dance songs struggle to do well in the chart.

 

I actually prefer the 2005 follow up by the same artists to our next track (that reached number 28). Both songs have a flute in.them (I suppose you could describe it as tropical trance).

This one has quite the story to it. 'Fly On The Wings Of Love' dates back to 2000 where it was a ballad (and completely unrelated to any dance music genre) written and performed by the Olsen Brothers - representing Denmark in the year's Eurovision Song Contest. It received 195 points and won the contest, yet it only reached as high as #160 in the UK singles chart.

 

The song picked up popularity with eurodance acts afterwards, with various remakes including by Danish producer DJ Cookie (2000) and German trance group Topmodelz (2002), although by far the most successful was from Spanish group XTM (members Xasqui and Toni Ten) and DJ Chucky with vocals from Annia (real name Eva Martí). The song is often wrongly credited to DJ Sammy on fan-uploaded YouTube videos due to the similar style of eurodance they share.

 

Incredibly the song spent eight weeks in the top ten making it one of the longest running top 10 hits of the year, yet it peaked no higher than #8. In the alternate reality where only dance songs are included in the chart, it spends six weeks at #1. It also became the 32nd best-selling single of the year selling over 160,000 copies and its animated music video was The Box's most played of the year. It's likely that this helped it have such a stable chart run unlike many others of its time.

 

XTM's follow up single 'Give Me Your Love' (also featuring DJ Chucky and Annia) was released nearly two years later and spent just one week in the UK Top 40, reaching #28. And that was the last we saw of them, besides 'Fly...'s numerous appearances on Clubland nostalgia compilations since.

Annia has quite a high pitched voice in it...and sounds a bit like today's Imani Williams.

 

I really disliked this up to recently because of the high pitched voice and the fact it is very Clublandy but now I appreciate it more

 

 

The flute in it is unusual for a eurotrance song (I used to think it was an Irish made song because of it (as flutes are used in Irish traditional music)).

 

Now it sounds more tropical (because of the use of pan flutes in tropical house), it is almost tropical trance (if there is such a thing)

 

I preferred, and still do prefer the follow up....which I remember from The Box along with lots of other 2005 (relative) dance flops :)

The links of XTM to Eurovision do not end with this one as the Ten brothers wrote Spain's 2002 Eurovision entry.

 

Also there will be another producer, with a similar name, DJ Chuckie, on this thread (who is not the same as this one)

The Opera Song is incredible. The vocals are great as is the production!

 

Actually this advert recently has a soundtrack which sounds quite reminiscent of the Opera Song...can't find the track it uses sadly though.

 

 

Room 5 and Oliver Cheatham - Make Luv

 

The song became popular, much as a result in its inclusion in a deodorant advert in the UK. It spent 4 weeks at number 1 in the UK and reached the top 10 in 4 other European countries. The duo released a follow up Music and You, which made number 38 later in 2003.

The original, which hadn't been a hit in the UK before, had also gained popularity through its inclusion on GTA Vice City which at the time was the biggest game of all time (I believe! I used to absolutely love it!)

 

Other tracks from GTA Vice City that gained mid-00s popularity through a dance cover included 'Out Of Touch' and 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart'.

 

'Make Luv' is a regular in my setlist.

This is an absolute tune as well, I've introduced it to my setlists recently.

 

I quite liked Will Young's out of the blue cover of it last year as well!

Haha, so cheesy but I did like this, and the Eurovision winner it covers.

It was actually the Pez Tellet remix of "Broken Bones" that was released in the UK. I loved both versions. The video is available

on YouTube but I can't post the link as I'm a new member.
