I will post the next one tomorrow I am sure you all desire to know what the identity of this object of extremely cheesy dance is. :D I shall listen to it now and learn to get used to the elevated pitch of the vocal and the sheer craziness of the record

Well ignoring Katie Melua from my example, more downtempo tracks tended to do well in Q4 while people move swiftly onto upbeat tracks in Q1 as they start the new year. So tracks that were looking to be low/medium size hits a la 'Out Of Touch' or 'Hey Ya!' suddenly got more recognition.

That's just a theory anyway :P I'd imagine there are more examples of tracks that bounced back into the new year like that.

But you would think more uptempo hits were for the summer months but in the 2000s a lot of years, particularly 2003 and 2005 a lot of the dance hits making top 10 were in the first few months of the year compared to the rest.

Dana Rayne - Object Of My Desire

This is quite an interesting one to start off the new dance number 1s of 2005. Mdh was saying how it was sad you wouldn't hear anything like some of these dance number 1s in the charts these days, and here's one that is probably as different in production to any chart dance today as is possible! On the discussion on early 00s music airplay on Buzzjack, this was cited as one of the hits that was heavily influenced by The Box music channel plays, and which Radio 1 wouldn't play (apart from in the chart show) as it was too cheesy.

The song is a cover of Starpoint's Object Of My Desire, a boogie and freestyle dance song from 1985. Dana Rayne is one of the only female producers (along with Sonique) to get a 00s dance number 1, and she also sings on the record. She is an American DJ from New York. Despite her American origins the track itself sounds very European in terms of dance style and can be considered eurotrance, which was a more pop influenced form of trance that was at its peak in mid 2002-mid 2004 in the UK as a chart force with top 10 hits such as 'Tell it To My Heart', 'Shooting Star', 'Fly On The Wings Of Love' and 'Pretty Green Eyes', and top 12 hits for 'Feelin' Fine' and 'Discoland'. Such music is heavily associated with the 'Clubland' albums however Object of My Desire is not on Clubland albums such as 100% Clubland and Complete Clubland, probably because it was not released by the AATW record company.

Anyway in all other regards it does stay true to the 00s Clubland model, including having an animated video (like Fly On The Wings Of Love, Discoland and Hungry Eyes had). It is actually probably the best music video of the mid 00s imo as a result, it certainly looks well produced.

Dana Rayne had no further hits, and there were few further eurotrance hits from now on, as a result of music channels not playing as much eurotrance from early 2005 onwards and focusing on house music for dance (and a little bit of drum and bass, for which there is one top 20 example in 2005 that I remember hearing on The Box at the time). There is however another eurotrance dance number 1 by the end of 2005, which is also a cover of an 80s song.

I remember it from the time I think, and I didn't really like it much at the time, as it was too cheesy and Clublandy. Until very recently, when I rediscovered it along with a lot of other 00s dance music by looking at the archive, I still thought the same, and to me it seemed like a bit of a backward step from the house music revival of late 2004. However now I appreciate it more and I think it is a good tune despite it being very cheesy, though it still isn't one of my favourite eurotrance tracks or chart dance tracks of the mid 00s.

Just one other new dance release making top 40 that week (at #31), like Object of My Desire it is also a eurotrance song, a quite good remix of a 90s classic with a very weird video. I may remember it a bit from the time but as with most eurotrance I probably wouldn't have liked it much.

I loved it! No shame lol

XTM, Flip & Fill, Special D, Ultrabeat, Styles & Breeze, Soda Club, and those Clubland hits

I love The Key The Secret and any kind of remixes of it

I prefer though the Northstarz remix from 2005 :D

Object Of My Desire is amazing! surprisingly, I feel as though the keyboard backing in the chorus is quite current, we're used to having a temporary slow down in tempo for the chorus nowadays like the one in this track.

It's very uptempo and lively, loving the relevance of the synths, and the vocals are very passionate and fun - kind of the opposite to what we get these days, vocals tend to be more pitched and boring. Overall this is a great track, and I'm loving the video (I remember when those graphics would have been considered great).

Can't wait for more :music:

Yes XTM have another great tune in 2005, makes number 28 but its even better than FOTWOL I think.

The next song is stronger a dance tune than the Dana Rayne one for me and is one of my 00s dance faves even the video is truly awful.

The video is of course excellent. I am debating over whether to post the terrible music video for the next one or just the audio video on youtube but I guess I will have to post the music video as the rest of the dance number 1s have them

I see where you are coming from with the synths there is a little bit of eurotrance style reminiscence for me in the drop of Something Just Like This, that song could easily be remixed into a eurotrance song with more of a buildup to the drop and a faster beat.

love 'Object Of My Desire', really catchy and energetic song - it really stood out at the time for being a lot faster and with a harder beat than other dance hits.

you'd never get a dance song half as cheesy becoming a hit now

that video is quite creepy tho, did they have to make her look like a serial killer

DJ Fresh, Sigala and Imani's Say You Do was very cheesy though imo. In vocal style there's not much difference between Dana Rayne and Imani I don't think.

The Urban Cookie Collective 2005 remix video is much creepier than the Object Of My Desire video.

I didn't really like tracks with the hard beats and eurotrance production at the time probably because I had heard too many eurotrance songs over the last few years on music channels and was sick of them. I thought the growing trend towards house was refreshing at the time.

Soul Central ft Kathy Brown - Strings Of Life (Stronger On My Own)

Another one week dance number 1, this is a UK one hit wonder both for British production duo Soul Central and the American singer Kathy Brown who features on the track.

The song is an uplifting retro sounding funky house track and definitely follows on this trend from Lola's Theme, although the production is much different, being largely piano based house. Like Lola's Theme however it has strings in it, these being sampled from the 1989 orchestral influenced house track 'Strings Of Life' by Rhythm Is Rhythm. The use of uplifting strings or string samples in house songs occurred quite a bit in chart dance songs in 2005 and 2006, obviously following a trend set by Lola's Theme, strong female retro vocals like Kathy Brown's vocal style also seemed to be a feature on many house songs in the top 40 during this time.

The instrumental for the Soul Central version started off popularity in clubs as an instrumental before the vocal was added for the official release. The official release reached number 6 in the UK chart, but didn't have much longevity, staying only further 3 weeks top 40 and 3 weeks top 100 after that.

I remember this one quite well from the time, having been reminded of it again along with many other tunes by looking back at the 00s chart archive a few years ago. It was played quite a bit on The Box music channel at the time iirc. I liked it at the time, like Lola's Theme I thought it was mostly aimed at people doing exercise with themes such as being stronger in it, but I still found it uplifting, motivational and a great song too, and a refreshing change from eurotrance, which I wasn't a fan of.

The only thing for me that lets this song down is the video  . I know it kind of depicts the lyrical theme in its story of revenge, but there are hundreds of better ways to depict it than this awful video. It also sadly resorts to the mid 00s sexualised video type.

Two more great dance tunes making the chart that week

#26 Drum and bass tune created as a result of a campaign to reduce knife crime. Remember this track from the time and thought it was a good track!

#28 Another not great video, but musically a very good song imo. I think I remember this from the time and I liked the chilled vocal style, which was present in a few other dance tracks in 2005, notably those by Juliet, Deep Dish and Reflekt, which may or may not be appearing as dance number 1's on this thread.

Dana Rayne, so cheesy

Love the Soul Central track - I've actually played this a few times early on in my sets recently!

You have the next four to post and the next one is one that was everywhere at the time too - what an epic drop it has! I liked it even more than the Soul Central one at the time because of that drop (although I like both equally now)!

Strings of Life is awesome! The vocals remind me a bit of the vocals from that current track by Hifi Sean and Crystal Waters, Testify. Love the orchestral breakdown bit especially, and the constant piano is very addictive. Another awesome track!

When The Dawn Breaks is a great tune, I feel as though I remember it from somewhere, maybe it was used in an ad at some point? Npot sure, but I loved the chilled vocals and the mysterious feel to the track.

That sample was also used on the Altern 8 single “E-Vapor-8” which reached #6 in April 1992.

That is a great tune , never heard it before, I am guessing the mix of uplifting vocals and the sample in it were the inspiration for the Soul Central record.

Tbh, the modern track Strings of Life (Stronger On My Own) reminds me a bit of in terms of the lively piano and retro vocal style (if nothing else) is Bakermat - Baby. Although there is a saxophone rather than strings in that one of course!

2005 wise, I think Testify is more similar in style to a more chilled house track, Deep Dish's Say Hello. Anyway, Testify is a great throwback to what chilled house that made the charts was like in the 00s which was nowhere near as lifeless as it is now imo. Testify should have been pushed by Radio 1 imo, it was doing quite well on iTunes and could have broken into doing decently on streaming enough to make low top 40 officially if Radio 1 would have playlisted it.

Yes, that's possible - Andy Ward (of Soul Central) was a DJ in the very early 90s when that record would no doubt have been played. A great shame that their better known “Activ 8 (Come With Me)” was not a Dance chart number 1 in the 1990s as I never got to review it, it later re-charted at Christmas in 2013 after a small campaign got it in the Top 40 at #33.

Looking forward to 2005 as I really enjoyed the dance music from that year, particularly a record which may be to come from Deep Dish?
