Have you heard this one by Morjac, Snakey?

big Ibiza funky house tune, released in 2005 but didn't chart. It was on a floorfillers or clubland compilation though which is how I knew it.

No actually...it sounds great though...not surprised it didn't chart as it is an instrumental but it doesn't really need a vocal imo. It's a particular style of funky house, like Little Love by Lil Love or Cahill Trippin On You or even more recently Michael Calfan's Nobody Does it better - more chilled funky house with a progressive house structure.

Latin house tune. I think I remember the chorus of this one from the time.

The chorus of this song is sampled from 5th Dimension's Aquarius - Let The Sun Shine In (#11 in 1969). The vocalist on the Milk & Sugar remake is Lizzy Pattinson, the sister of actor Robert Pattinson.

I think I know the chorus from the Milk and Sugar version as I renember it as being quite dancey. The original is good but weird its like two songs in one, the Aquarius and the Sunshine one, I.suppose that was the progressive rock era where many songs had multiple parts.

My favourite dance song was Barcelona from this time at the time (I loved singing the chorus I remember) and I still really like this tune. Now I can see there were quite a few great tunes from this time, Summer Jam, Overload (even if it is a bit cheesy), Show Me A Sign and Wilderness.

Good to see this thread back! The big BIG one that stands out for me is 'Show Me A Sign' - something that in the wrong hands could sound horrific (basically Binary Finary's '1998' beefed up with a massive screaming pop vocal over the top) is utterly stunning, and I only paid 10p for the CD single when on clearance sale about a decade ago - one of the best 10ps I've ever spent! Really glad it went top 20 but seems unfairly forgotten now for such a trancepop banger.

Summer Jam was colossal in mainland Europe earlier in the year - 2003 being one of the hottest summers on record across the continent (remember it well!) and that probably did a lot to help its slightly belated UK release happen. Given the amount of Eurosmashes that have failed to make it in this country, I'm glad at least that one was the hit here it deserved - had it got released at the very peak of the heatwave (early August) I reckon it could have gone top 5.

Weather does help the chart performance of some songs quite a bit I think - there's two summery dance tracks in 2011 (Inna's 'Sun Is Up' and Sak Noel's 'Loca People') that charted way higher than I'd initially expected, and both were during unexpected heatwaves in April and early October that year. Wonder if the random 30 degree heat encouraged a few more purchases than had the weather been more normal during those times!

Show Me A Sign is great, probably my favourite vocal trance song that made the charts in 2003.

The Jason Nevins, U.N.K.Y. and Holly James - Heaven track was massive too, I think I remember that one from the time, although it missed top 5 too.

The next one quite literally goes doo doo doo doo-doo-doo doo doo if that is a clue.

How much were CD Singles usually at the time, would they have been less or more expensive than the 99p ones on itunes in todays money?

I wouldn't call Kontakt Show Me A Sign trancepop, it is more vocal trance. Overload by Voodoo and Serano is trancepop I would say.

Not sure but cd singles at their cheapest were 1.99 for two songs but usually dearer especially in the 90s maybe as much as 3.99

Yeah definitely vocal trance, wrong terminology on my part there.

CD singles were absolutely more expensive back then - they'd start off cheap in their first week (99p or £1.99) but soon shoot up to as high as £4.99 later on, and then when they were really desperate to clear stock they'd sell them off mega-cheap for less than a quid in a bargain bin. At the end of 2003/beginning of '04 they restructured the rules in an attempt to stop plummeting physical sales - you had a 2-track CD single for around £1.99, that usually just contained the main song and a B-side (or if it was a dance track the main song and a remix) and then a 'maxi single' (up to 40 minutes worth of extra tracks) for around £3.99, maybe £4.99 if it included the video.

For a dance fan like me, if you just wanted the song on its own (in radio edit form) you went for the £1.99 2-track. If you wanted the full extended version or a certain remix you'd heard on Radio 1, you went for the maxi, and if you adored the song in every possible way you saved up to buy both - sounds so bizarre in today's Youtube/Spotify age but this is how I used to do it right up until the late noughties!

Of course legal downloads were taking off by this point but weren't included in the chart until 2006.

Although I assume the legal downloads were released after the CD single to encourage people to buy the CD single (which would count for the chart) and I also assume that for obvious reasons many songs weren't up for legal download at all during the physical only period from 2003 to 2005.

Legal downloads didn't really exist in the UK (at least in any meaningful way) until June 2004 when the iTunes Store launched. They were gradually introduced into the UK chart from April 2005 to January 2007, initially only if a physical single existed, then a week before the physical release (when 'Crazy' became the first download-only #1) then all restrictions lifted this time a decade ago.

CD singles played a fairly big role in the charts right into the first few years of the download era, even as recently as 2010 - Kylie Minogue's 'All The Lovers' is one of the last songs I can think of that climbed the charts after the release of the CD, if only by a couple of places.

Scooter vs Marc Acardipane and Dick Rules - Maria (I Like It Loud)

Alright everybody, tie your shoes. This one is definitely on the hard side.

One of our shortest reins in the top 100 with this tune, and given that it is a hardstyle song (with elements of 2 Unlimited style 90s rave too as many of Scooter's song's had) and not very poppy it is not surprising. Dance too wasn't doing very well in the charts in late 2013, with no dance song in the top 10 from now to the end of 2003, and a few weeks after the release of this song there is one week where no dance song is in the top 40 (at the end of November).

With the afore-mentioned 90s sounding hard dance sound, it is not surprising this is a new version of a hardcore track from the 90s - original lyrics "My radio believe me I like it loud", which came from the LL Cool J song 'I Can't Live Without My Radio'.

It fits in with the covering of hardcore tracks from the 90s that was going on at the time (although this unlike the happy hardcore tracks by Flip and Fill and others, keeps its original style). Marc Acardipane and the MC that works with him, Dick Rules (not sure if that is his real name but it doesn't seem likely ), also feature on the new version as well as Scooter. Together with the doop doop doop doop-doop-doop doop doop by Dick Rules I assume on top of the hard beats of the chorus it perhaps may be a little headache inducing to some if played above a certain volume but good fun all the same imo. It has a humorous rap from HP Baxxter in his unique style as usual but doesn't have any pitched vocals.

It is the second last Scooter hit in the UK before the equally hard dance track Jumping All Over The World, but Maria (I Like it Loud) is the last dance number one we will see from this unique dance group on this thread and so we must say goodbye to Scooter here.

A personal note, I think I do remember it from the time as all of Scooter's songs were played on The Box music channel on release of course, but sadly I didn't appreciate it, it was much too hard for me, but I do like it now.

David Guetta - Just A Little More Love (Wally Lopez remix)

This was the debut top 40 hit of French DJ David Guetta (and the uncredited Chris Willis) in the UK. The version of this song that was released in the UK was this remix of Guetta's 2001 French House song Just A Little More Love. This remix may be what is sometimes described as trouse, house with trance synths, for another trouse song see the lush sounding Love Will Set You Free (Jambe Myth) by Starchaser back in 2002. However for simplicity, I will just lump these two songs in with progressive house :).

David Guetta had been working since 1984 as a DJ, hosting club nights from when he discovered house music in 1987. He released his first track in 1990 to little success and released a few more in the 90s which became minor club hits, but didn't make the UK top 100. Chris Willis who was the singer on this song is a former American gospel singer, who also appeared on Love Don't Let Me Go in 2006 with David Guetta, Getting Over You (with Fergie and LMFAO) and this years' Would I Lie To You cover with Cedric Gervais.

Wally Lopez, who created the remix, is a Spanish house music producer from Madrid who started producing records in the year 2000. He is still an active producer on soundcloud and an active DJ in Ibiza.

I may actually remember this song from the time despite it only being in the top 40 for two weeks. It's a good track and I much prefer the Wally Lopez remix to the original because of the inclusion of the trance synths.

The single cover is also very different....not sure which one was used in the UK. Anyway I went with this one as it is more interesting than the other one. The person on the cover looks like she is either enjoying the music or falling asleep

Ian van Dahl - I Can't Let You Go

Eurotrance and vocal trance were still popular at this time, although less of it was doing well in the charts by this time. The Belgian trance group Ian van Dahl had become a bit more poppy after Castles In The Sky, their first release back in 2001. This one is notable for vocal trance along with Kontakt's Show Me A Sign in adopting the climax without any words, as has been adopted by modern day progressive house, rather than the usual vocal trance big chorus.

The video features some quite slow dancing for a track with quite a high bpm. It features as most common with Ian van Dahl's videos, the group's singer Annemie Coenen.

This is the last track by this group to feature so it is worth noting what happened to this iconic early 00s dance group. The group released another single in July 2004, believe, which made number 27 in the UK chart. Their record company, NuLife, which specialised in trance, ceased to exist soon after meaning their last UK top 100 hit Inspiration was released by a small record label. It only managed to make number 87 in October 2004.

By 2008 the singer Annemie joined producer Peter Luts who used to be in Lasgo. They continued to have more progressive house/eurodance hits in Belgium, and a few in The Netherlands and Turkey too until 2013.

I Can't Let You go, I think is a great tune, a huge musical wall of big trance synths.

The next one is brilliant by the way. Way ahead of its time...its particular style was still relevant and making the charts as recently as late 2015.

quite a few non-hits appearing here now as we enter the dry period for dance in 2003, quite amazing though that what seemed like a faceless DJ we'd never see again turned out to be the biggest dance producer in 2009-12 - although 'Just A Little More Love' is quite a bit different to the sound he is generally known for today.

I don't recall those Scooter and Ian Van Dahl songs, will have to give those a listen later.

This is the original Just A Little More Love, a bit closer to his original sound than the remix that was a hit in the UK

I am sure you have heard of the next one though. I remember it quite a bit from the time. What a difference in quality between the next one and that artists' much inferior last UK hit in early 2005 though.

Scooter vs Marc Acardipane and Dick Rules - Maria (I Like It Loud)

This was awful. Truly, truly awful.

David Guetta - Just A Little More Love (Wally Lopez remix)

This one I love and still feel is one of his very best hits to date. It had his heart and soul in it and a fantastic little remix. Would have been a huge huge hit had it been a few years later and I think it has aged very well. I play this in my DJ sets from time to time.

Ian van Dahl - I Can't Let You Go

I don't remember this whatsoever!!

I don't think Maria (I Like It Loud) is too bad, its a fun enough hardstyle track, I wouldn't say it is the best of Scooter's output though.

The only tracks I dislike from 2002 to 2006 are

Discoland, Sunrise, Poison, Yeah Yeah (dislike this the most), Put Your Hands Up For Detroit and Truly Madly Deeply.

After 2006 things go way downhill for me for 2007, but there are still a few dance gems from that year.

Edited by 🚡🚟🍥-♨🎪🚘🎉🍥

Maria joins the list of dance #1s I've seen performed live (Scooter's UK tour in 2008) - love or it hate it, shouting out those "DOO DOO DOO"s together in a huge arena was pretty epic for me as a nineteen year old :D

This video is of the Manchester gig, I was at the Birmingham one a day before. Slightly terrifying that this was almost ten years ago...
