Jake, you know us Britney fans are crazy as hell. I gotcha.
I totally get the enjoyment of the Break The Ice video, I find it equally as baffling that the video has multiple -1s.

You're baffled about people being encouraged to give a -1 to a video and they're giving it to the one that she's not in?

She's there in anime form. *.*

madge ruins it. brits bits are good i guess but it's never been a video I've chosen to rewatch and even at the time it didn't really enter my concience. I'm mainly going off that too, how much a video stuck with me and how much I'd wanna watch it again. MATM is not up there for me. BTI on the other hand is so well made and at the time it really stuck with me. Also the fact it didn't have her in it made me concentrate more on the song (which in itself is an 11) and therefore keep going back to the video.

I can get behind all of this, just the 0 comment was... horrifying. Having read your later posts I can totally see giving 'Me Against The Music' a MEDIOCRE score, just not anything approaching a zero. Cos that's crazy talk.

But her beautiful face

Doing this now and it's really tough to compare her earlier and later videos! Videos like 'Crazy' and 'Sometimes' seem so trashy now because they were aimed at a younger audience but at the time they seemed like really good videos... How to rate them? If child Umi was doing this he'd give 'Crazy' like a 10 but if I was to be really harsh in 2016 I could probably go below 5.

The only videos 'Break The Ice' is superior to is 'From The Bottom of My Broken Heart', 'Radar', 'Someday', 'Perfume' and 'Make Me'. Which is pretty spectacular coming from a stan that will always choose the real thing over an anime version.

Imagine her making a video for Break The Ice today. Britney frolicking around the North Pole having a snowball fight with her girlfriends in cute mommy North Face parkas. And then when she says "I Like This Part" she booty dances with Santa clause or some shit, idk. I can't handle momney spears on the lead single video about having an orgasm. Christ.

No are you kidding! The scene in Perfume where she's on the bed in her underwear lay with the guy is one of the hottest/prettiest moments I've seen Britney in.

Strangely enough I gave My Prerogative a great score too because of the scenes of her in her underwear on the bed.

Maybe I've got a thing for Brit in her undies :o

For me I looked at how memorable and iconic they were from when I was growing up. Even BOMT would feel weird if it were released today, but I look at how much impact it had on me at the time.

I too was a bit confused at the 'Me Against the Music' video hate as I always under the impression it had some of her most fierce dance routines in it. (I totally get Jake's reasoning behind it though).

I'm actually really looking forward to sitting down and watching through all Britney's videos. I did it a few years back for Madonna (at this point I hadn't even heard all her singles so that was my main aim) and I can tell I'll want to do it again after watching Britney's.

!! This is perfect! :')

My rate (including some vague, dull commentary cos this > BuzzRate)

09 ...Baby One More Time

06 Sometimes - this video gives me so many feels about the time it came out for Britney/the world and the terribleness is kind of endearing but the choreo and backup dancers are just amusingly bad here.

08 (You Drive Me) Crazy - this video feels kinda iconic to me? Sabrina cameo was so perfect, and I feel like everyone wanted to dance with Britney

05 Born To Make You Happy - I feel like this video was the start of Britney and co trying to make slightly 'interesting' videos with some weirder setups featured, but they didn't really know what they were doing just yet

06 From the Bottom of My Broken Heart - am I right in thinking that the "Welcome to Cedar Springs!" sign is the birth of Britney product placement? Cute video for a hilariously terrible single.

10 Oops!...I Did it Again - I actually think this video is super underrated by the fanbase and is better than 'Baby'. SO much more ambitious than a Britney video had need to be and I don't think videos like 'Toxic' would exist if this didn't. I love it, it's kind of hilarious.

09 Lucky

07 Stronger

05 Don't Let Me Be The Last to know

09 I'm a Slave 4 U - the transition between DLMBTLTK and this is... jarring to say the least. You can kinda see why this didn't have amazing success worldwide.

08 Overprotected - bonus points for Anastacianey

07 I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman

05 I Love Rock N Roll

05 Boys - Proto-ITZney was kinda cringe.

08 Overprotected Darkchild Remix

10 Me Against the Music - unpopular opinion: Suitney is probably the sexiest she's ever looked.

11 Toxic - my favourite song & video ever, and the reason I became a stan.

10 Everytime

11 My Prerogative - there is SO MUCH I could say about this video/song combo, and it breaks my heart that it's so underrated both by the fans and the general public (WHAT HAPPENED AMERICA IT WAS A BRITNEY LEAD). Like, for a time when "err, is Britney kinda going off the rails?" was just starting to become a thing, this video was absolutely perfect. She looks so amazingly sinister and so very happy at the thought of looking that way, the lyrics are perfectly creepy for the imagery, the black and white bed setup is somehow perfect and she looks beyond incredible (maybe better than Suitney, I'm not sure). Everything to do with the car at the start should be iconic, also. Amazing.

09 Do Somethin' - honestly I wish this wasn't the only video Britney directed. This is fabulous and was similarly perfect for the song and time.

04 Someday (I will Understand)

01 Gimme More - this is still dire 9 years later. The scenes where looks almost dementedly happy show some promise for a 'My Prerogative' 2.0 but everything else is just so horrid. It's just so boring even before you take into account the ugliness and so on.

06 Piece of Me

07 Break The Ice

10 Womanizer - I always found this a bit too cartoony in comparison to 'Toxic' but it's grown on me over the years. Probably her best video post-breakdown.

08 Circus

09 If U Seek Amy

06 Radar - how exactly has this video got as many views as 'If U Seek Amy' and MORE than '3'?

07 3

08 Hold it Against Me - there are parts of this video that are really crappy but there's also some properly amazing stuff to it, even if the editing can mar even those bits. The paint breakdown is sooooooooo good and so clever. Product placement is disgusting in this though.

05 Till The World Ends - why anyone thought a dance party Britney video was a good idea in 2011 is beyond me. The choreo is painful here.

07 I Wanna Go - tries a bit too hard and the mic singing is just kind of crap but some good stuff here

08 Criminal

06 Scream & Shout

05 Ooh La La

10 Work Bitch - probably better than 'Womanizer' actually

02 Perfume

04 Pretty Girls - there's some good to this as well as the bad!

-1 Make Me... - I know this seems quite overreaction-y but I really do think it'll always be my least favourite Britney video. She's done boring videos, yes, but I've never found her unlikeable in a video until 'Make Me'. It deserves the -1 for making me actually spend 4 minutes disliking Britney.

What I learned from this rate is how insanely fast Britney matured in her career. It's crazy that videos like 'Everytime' were coming out only 6 years after she started her career as such an innocent, parent-pleasing act. Jive were really brave to let her evolve the way she did - I get the impression that her progression would have been much, much slower if she'd started today. At the same time, I'm surprised she managed to last as long as she did considering just how jarring a lot of the transitions she made were. Going from the Oops! era to the Britney era was such a huge transformation with so little time between it that I am surprised people weren't just like "Nope" to it, and Britney going to In The Zone was pretty big too. I feel like it was the Blackout era which cemented her as an established, adult popstar, at which point she could have done pretty much whatever she wanted and got away with it, but we should probably be grateful she got that far.

Hope people found any interest at all in that commentary ~

You, apparently

No! I just didn't like the video for 'Perfume' because it sounded as if it was going to be similar to the 'We Found Love' video. Yeah, she was gorgeous. But, in what video is she NOT gorgeous? I rated 'My Prerogative' a 9 just for the underwear scene! And the car in the pool shit.

Fantastic commentary, Umi! Agreed about her progression and how fast it seemed. It was definitely needed though, imo. I think that may be the reason as to why I am the fan today. She seemed to grow with her fanbase, whilst still managing to appeal to a wider audience.

my-prerogative.gif

Lovely commentary, Umi! I didn't follow charts when 'My Prerogative' came out, but it was huge even though the charts didn't show that. The single wasn't available to buy, along with the charts transitioning to include download sales (hence why Do Somethin' hit the top 100 when in January, even though it wasn't even released here) But, I think it was an infamous moment for her career. It was the kiss off to her peak of not giving a flying f***, especially since she still didn't have kids to account for.

She was still America's sweetheart even up to 'Outrageous'. Her team did a fantastic job of counteracting her private life leaking out the sides of the curtain because of brilliant PR and because she was the hottest shit walking the earth at the time. 'My Prerogative' was the mark of the general public backlash in America. But, what did she do? She took a long break from music (In The Zone - Blackout is still our largest gap in time for her to not release a studio album). It was the PERFECT goodbye even though she went through immense turmoil. She completely left her teen roots behind and came back brilliantly with 'Gimme More'.

Like, you seriously can't write this shit. Her career from 1998 - 2009 is truly iconic to the world in every. single. tiny. step. And 'My Prerogative' was her for the first time telling her haters to shut the f*** up.

Everyone was talking about MP and her greatest hits freaking out about her retiring. God, I kinda miss those days even though I know she doesn't.

Umi your write up is perfect. I agree with you on so many points

I think it's inspired me to write one for mine too!
