Commentary

Bob Marley isn't someone I expected to have another chart hit but clearly he suits tropical house as this is a proper bangin' remix. Spinnin' signees LVNDSCAPE and Bolier make it sound amazing and it was great seeing it become a UK top 20 hit also. Gotta love the whistling too, the whole thing is a brilliant way to bring a Bob Marley song up to date and make it sound fresh and exciting.

Danny is back again and 'Ashes Of Love' is by far his highest entry here. I've kinda said everything there is to say about him already, but this song just outdoes 'Super Natural' by a fair amount. I like the production and vocal more, and the short key change in the middle really elevates this. He really set himself a high standard with 'Broken Flowers' but this is almost as good, and so different too.

This was a huge hit single in the waiting... but of course it never got pushed in the UK. :| Felix Jaehn knows how to make a great dance song or remix and for this occasion working with Alma who he introduced to us, she's got two solo top 40s in my chart largely off the back of this (and also from 'Karma' being sent to BJSC) so she's someone we're watching now. I love her vocal, and it has a great message too, actually pulling the 'I'm stronger now' pop trait better than quite a few pop singers (*cough* Katy Perry). Jaehn's production also is brilliant as always, and this is a bit of a step forward for him from his usual tropical house so I like that too.

Commentary

Galantis came back with their biggest hit single to date and also the best performing in my chart. It's a really fun dance song which we don't get too much of in the chart anymore, with one of the catchiest melodies of the year and great production to back it up. I wasn't expecting them to outdo 'Runaway' but that's exactly what happened here.

No Money and Is This Love are both really fab

Also like the Felix Jaehn and Danny L Harle songs too :D

This got sent to BJSC just as it was taking off on Spotify which certainly helped with its big debut on my chart, instantly going in at #4 where it would peak. It ended up just making the UK top 40 as well though sadly never took off on sales or airplay. Tropical dance really has been the flavour of the year and I can't complain when it's done this brilliantly, with such a lovely vocal too.

Commentary

Kungs had two huge hits in my chart this year, 'This Girl' of course is yet to come and a big contender for the EOY #1 but this was released as the follow-up. It took a while to really get going for me but I ended up loving it, also helps that this wasn't a second-rate 'This Girl' clone like 'I Feel So Bad' was. It's just a great chill-out summer song, even if most of Jamie's vocals are indecipherable, so a huge shame that it didn't even crack the UK top 100.

Commentary

Cheat Codes had their big breakthrough this year with sex anthem 'Sex', featuring lyrics such as "do it in the shower, pussy power" :') . It's an undeniable jam though and deservedly a big hit in the UK. It didn't quite make the top 10 in my chart unfortunately but it now gets the honour of being the highest song in this year's EOY that peaked outside the top 10. I really like what they've done with the song and made it their own, which puts this well above 'Let Me Hold You' for me.

Here's another BJSC entry now and one that I sent, this one unfortunately flopped in its semi-final but finished mid-table in the Rejects. It's a brilliantly made house instrumental that for me is even better than his 'Fast Car' cover, and was unlucky enough to spend five weeks at #2 behind 'This Girl' by Kungs.

How do you set the chart btw?
it's based on points calculated from my weekly charts; #1 = 100 points down to #100 = 1 point.

I actually don't mind One Dance really, 15 weeks at #1 was ridiculous but I'd rather it happened to that Drake song than pretty much any of his others!

In the Name of Love is great! I like the new sound he's got, definitely back on track for me after the huge generic misfire of Don't Look Down. Animals remains his best, a rare instance of me actually liking an instrumental song :o (well, almost instrumental)

It was quite funny seeing people losing their minds over Drake spending 15 weeks at #1 though, I enjoyed the reign myself as that kind of thing doesn't often happen. Although I would've liked to see Kungs get a few weeks at #1 which he would have if it were 1:150 at the time :(

I loved Don't Look Down also but In The Name was a definite improvement. Animals was of course huge in my chart also.

No Money and Is This Love are both really fab

Also like the Felix Jaehn and Danny L Harle songs too :D

good to hear~

thanks guys~ :D

The Ocean is excellent, feels weird now to think that it was a UK top 40 hit actually because nothing ever came of it in the end! I guess it ended up being a bit of a Joel Adams where it got on all the Spotify playlists but they didn't send it to radio :( shame really, wasted potential.

Is This Love is actually a bit of a jam, I found it really weak at first but the whistling is rather infectious!

Is This Love :music: Still to appear in my EOY, such a great dance remix!

Bonfire took a while to grow on me, but it is a great collaboration!

No Money is amazing as well :music:

Trouble, This Is What You Came For, The Ocean, Is This Love, TheFatRat, In The Name Of Love, Piece Of Me. Good EOY chart, Thermos. :)

Edited by DalekTurret32

Hi Dan

Yay at the Is This Love remix popping up, I always forget how much I liked that 'til I hear it on the radio again or something, the whistling as you mentioned is incredibly infectious and I love the whole vibe of the song, was really wishing it would get top 10 officially at one point but now it feels a bit forgotten already :(

Sex is a bit of a jam but the lyrics sort of turned me off, they were bit too much almost  Loved the drop though so was a bit disappointed with how boring the follow-up was in comparison, enjoying Are You Sure from KKA at the moment though, the return of Conor Maynard is upon us!!

Making some vague predictions, I'll go...

1. This Is What You Came For

2. This Girl

3. My Way

4. Do It Right

5. Trouble

(total stab in the dark with Do It Right btw - I do recall it having some very impressive longevity in your chart, though)

I still don't understand why these labels give songs like The Ocean a big Spotify push but no radio push, could've been a big hit otherwise.

I'm not big on Are You Sure, it's all a bit been there done that though I do like it.

umm... My Way has already been  fairly low down too as it only had 10 weeks in the chart tracking period.

Do It Right is a definite contender for top 5~

thanks guys~ :D

I still don't understand why these labels give songs like The Ocean a big Spotify push but no radio push, could've been a big hit otherwise.

I think there's an element of stubbornness to it really - I've seen that Joel Adams has turned down like 14 major label record deals in the past year  just keen to show how an independent label can get a song to go viral or whatever, ignoring how they could've made even more impact (and money) by simply sending the song to radio

Rihanna and Drake had the amazing 'What's My Name' which made my EOY top 10 in 2011. Five years later it was about time they released the sequel (ignoring 'Take Care' as Drake was the lead on that) and it was as good as I expected. It's such a jam and exactly what Rihanna needed to launch the 'ANTI' era with. I don't care if half the chorus is nonsense words when it has such a good rhythm. Sir Drake is great as always too although the WMN verse remains far better. It was good to see this become a massive official and streaming hit anyway just to show that she's still relevant as ever (that Rih reign...). Oh and that's not the last we see of Rihanna, could she get the EOY #1 with Calvin Harris??? :o
