Commentary

And another Danaelandan BJSC entry now, this one is probably the most obscure of them with less than 100k views on YouTube (although the 'Dark Dub' edit has nearly 200k views, it is the original mix that charts here). It spent five weeks at number one although all the songs it held from the top actually out chart it in the EOY (aside, there are only four #1s in the top 10). At seven and a half minutes long, it takes a while to get going but every second is worth it, with its haunting introduction which finally leads into a spoken female vocal. It's a very dark song, with minor chords and a deep voice choir effect plotted all throughout, and the lyrics certainly reflect that as well, but I love it for its uniqueness and brilliance. It also has a great climax and I also absolutely love the section where it goes to a major key for a while before crashing back down to reality with the chorus (if you can call it that).

Love the uplifting retro vibes of Trouble and Sweet Lovin' particularly, sound like the sort of lively dance songs that became hits in about 2006.

Have you listened to 'It's My Man' too? Lots of retro vibes going on in that, you may like.

Great song, definitely my fave of theirs of now just ahead of Attracting Flies, should have been the hit instead of I'm In Control.
I never liked Attracting Flies, glad we agree on I Remember though.

Sweet Lovin' :cheer: Really love it, my favourite Sigala track so far!

Don't Be So Shy & Trouble both amazing as well!

Sweet Lovin' will never be topped, Sigala seems to be have declined in quality since. But most people don't make a Sweet Lovin' 11/10 moment so...

Yes it is very mid 00s, and I really liked it, and hopefully it making top 75 shows that more uplifting dance like this could come back in 2017. We are due a 00s dance revival now imo.
a 00s dance revival would be great, especially the early 00s sounds like trance and funky house.

Just heard this...really good...instrumental wise a bit like the 'Morjac Theme' track you posted on the 00s dance number 1s thread.
glad you like it. ;)

thanks guys~ :D :jump:

I would imagine Kungs would be your #1 but Calvin & MK to push him close perhaps.

I hope it's Kungs tho, definitely my fave of your top 10

Most obscure clearly = best then (or nearly), I thought Maceo Plex would be more popular than that actually. Really good to see it so close to your top 10.

although Monody should be your highest entry :kink:, still, great entry into the top 20, as are Sweet Lovin and Sing Me To Sleep

Three Danaelandan BJSC entries in a row then, but this is the highest of all of them. Croatia Squad, who ironically isn't Croatian nor is a squad (being a Swiss DJ) teamed with producer and singer Lika Morgan for a great deep house reworking of 'Make Your Move', most famously done by Junior Jack but originally a Pointer Sisters sample. It's ridiculously catchy and I love Morgan's ad-libs. Musically it's not that different to other songs of this genre, but it just does it so much better. It may have flopped in BJSC but I stand by it being my best entry of the year (and that does include Avicii's 'Dear Boy'!) because everything about it is just brilliant. Released on Enormous Tunes, I have to agree that it's an enormous tune.

Alan Walker's breakthrough single made a huge impact with me at the start of the year, it really was like nothing I'd heard before and so I was very impressed that it was quickly climbing Spotify. It eventually made the UK top 10 as well and became one of the year's biggest hit singles globally. Solheim has such a beautiful voice on this as well and it's got some great lyrics. Alan Walker is definitely someone I'm very excited about now, one of the year's best musical discoveries, and he's only the same age as me so he's got a great future ahead of him.

Maceo Plex seems to be quite a popular DJ in his genre but 'Mirror Me' is one of his more lesser known singles.

I thought you'd disagree with 'Monody' being lower than Croatia Squad/Maceo Plex/Mickey :kink: but at least there is another TheFatRat song in the top 10.

Commentary

Another huge worldwide hit here, I'm still a commercial hoe to an extent so there's a few of these in the top 10. 'Lush Life' really is pop perfection though and Zara Larsson (or her writing team) may well be the saviour of pop music in 2016, having released a number of great tunes but especially this. It's got a great catchy hook and it's very upbeat, with clear influences from dance music. She's got the personality of a pop star and she can really sing too, so it was great watching this become a global megasmash. It took its time but eventually made #1 in the chart for two weeks before being kicked off by 'Piece of Me' (yet to come), and has since got another #1 with 'I Would Like' which will make an appearance in 2017's EOY.

Faded and Lush Life both excellent in many ways

This was unlucky enough to spend six weeks at #2 behind three different songs, 2 of which are yet to come. After the Mike Posner remix I was excited for what SeeB had next, and it made a great first impression. After a few listens I knew I'd like this even more and it shows. For a dance track it's so simple yet emotional which is what I really love about it. It's got a lush melody and lovely vocalist, and such a unique way of bringing together progressive house elements with their signature vocal pitching effects and chill production. The only explanation for this not receiving a chart push is that simply it's too good for the British public to handle.

I didn't think Martin Solveig would ever top 'Hello', though he came close with 'Intoxicated', then 'Do It Right' was released and that's now by far my favourite of his releases. It's got the right amount of fun in it and great punching synths in the drop, and such a good bassline throughout. I'm not excited about Tkay Maidza as a solo artist but she is great in this also, with memorable and catchy lyrics. It became one of those tunes for me that didn't get boring for ages and eventually spent 16 weeks in the top 10, a record for a #3 hit.

Breathe and Do It Right are both MASSIVE BANGING CHOONS - glad they're so high

Commentary

Amazingly it took this long for Calvin Harris to get his first #1 hit as the lead performer, but as soon as 'This' was released I knew it would go straight in at number one. It then proceeded to spend a quarter of the year in the top 3 including six weeks at #1, and nearly half the year in the top 40 making it Calvin's best performing single to date. It fully deserves its place as one of the best five songs of 2016, with its longevity proving that it wasn't simply all hype no substance. Of course with it being a Calvin and Rihanna collab, both being amongst my favourite performers of all time, my expectations were sky high... and it delivered.

People are too quick to criticise the song for the excessive use of the 'ooh-ooh-ooh'ing, but it really works in the context of this song and I love how Calvin uses Rihanna's great voice as an instrument in the drop. The drop is great too, with such a big buildup you could easily expect another all-out breakdown in the style of 'Summer' but instead it goes for a slightly more minimal approach, but creeping up on you as it progresses. Which makes it amazing for repeated listens, eventually getting 100 of those.

Make Your Move a big highlight of that contest

Faded is of course brilliant but I still think quite overrated! Certainly not the best dance song of the year like many members have posted :kink:

Lush Life I really liked before it went big but I got sick of it really quickly then, luckily she's done better since.

Breathe I never got into at all :/ decent but nothing more for me.

Do It Right is an anthem tho! One of his absolute best.

I'm glad TIWYCF didn't finish higher :P

Commentary

Now this is really brilliant. I was very hyped for what TheFatRat would release after 'Monody' and as it turned out it was another collab with Laura Brehm except she'd take a more central role to the song this time. She's got an amazing voice which really fits this type of electronic music and I love the doubling effect used in the chorus, giving her voice a real heavenly feel. The production is spectacular too, even with the song following a more typical song structure than 'Monody' it feels like just as much effort has gone into it, with the atmospheric space feel and it building up so effortlessly. It's also got such a big drop too, everything about this is big. Instantly debuting at number two, and eventually spending 24 weeks in my top 20 (one of the longest top 20 runs ever), it certainly deserves a place in this top five.

Chart History (Era Istrefi)

2016 05 Bonbon [EOY #3]

Commentary

I definitely didn't expect this to end up in my top 3 of the year, but it really is a massive fun bop. Sung by the Albanian equivalent of Rihanna this was introduced to me through BJSC where it was eventually voted the best entry of the year, though it was post-contest when it really grew on me, hanging in the middle section of the chart for a while until the

was released which shot it straight into the top 10! Eventually peaking at #5, it becomes one of a few songs that chart higher in the EOY than their weekly peak. Controversially I prefer the English version, though both are great. Unfortunately the iconic video is only available for the original, and the remake never got given a commercial push. Why I like it so much, well it's just a great sexy dancey pop song, and beats Rihanna at her own game this year charting higher than all her efforts in the EOY.

Which means my #1 song of the year is either Kungs vs. Cookin On 3 Burners - This Girl or MK & Becky Hill - Piece Of Me. The latter has a weeks advantage, spending four more weeks in the tracking period, but 'This Girl' spent 12 weeks at #1 compared to 'Piece Of Me's two. Only one of them can be declared my favourite song of 2016 however.
