Andrew's ReviewNow That's What I Call Music! 16 aka Now 16 was the winter release from 1989 and it was to be the final release from the 1980s. Now 16 features 3 exclusive bonus tracks only available on Double CD format bringing the total CD tracklisting to 35 which was the highest ever of the time.

Despite a huge selection of tracks, none of them were UK #1 hits which is a big dissapointment when you consider the #1s of the time such as Black Box – Ride On Time; Jive Bunny – That's What I Like; Lisa Stansfield – All Around The World and New Kids On The Block – You Got It (The Right Stuff).

However, Now 16 does contain music from the likes of Belinda Carlisle, The Beautiful South, Tina Turner, Bobby Brown and Cliff Richard to name a few.

Now 16 opened the way for artists like Sydney Youngblood, Richard Marx, Technotronic, Jimmy Somerville and Shakespear’s Sister. There was also a debut from Cathy Dennis who featured with D-Mob; she would go on to have further chart success as a solo artist.

But as always, there were one hit wonders, and this time round they came from Tears For Fears, Wendy And Lisa, Lil' Louis, Big Fun, Oh Well, Redhead Kingpin & The FBI and Fresh 4 feat. Lizz E.

You might say the cover was perhaps one of the most striking of all the different logo designs, as this Now 16 logo seemed to be a sign lit up at night (similar to that of Now 10) and the very firey effect from the logo is reflected in a rippled body of water beneath the sign. A truly wonderful concept and very bright. However, sadly this was to be the very last time in the series that these Now designs would be used as future Now covers experimented with different designs to replace what had come to be a familiar image in the music shops. This logo was seen the last time on Now 16.

Despite having absolutely 0 UK #1s, this is actually a very good album. The musical variety is very good, and seems to offer quite alot of different choice. There are some familiar 80s artists included, and some new talent too. There is another dissapointment about the album, apart from 0 UK #1s, because it also has a non Top 40 single which only peaked at #69.

I do like the cover though, it might seem very basic, but it is remembered for me as the last of it's kind, and I can only wonder what the designs may have been like today if that cover concept continued.

 

Artwork Rating: 7/10 Very Good

Quite pretty really, the neonlit fiery logo beautifully reflected in a pool of water below at night causes this to be a very good artwork and a fine sendoff for the 80's.

 

Disc 1 Favourite: Tina Turner – The Best

Simple really, it is Tina's best hit single, and easily the most recognised too. A stand out song from this era and still gets played a lot today too. A real anthem from a real female powerhouse.

 

Disc 2 Favourite: Technotronic – Pump Up The Jam

A floorfillers classic, a real dancefloor anthem from the late 80's. Technotronic went on to have several other hits in the early 90's too.

 

Overall Rating: 5/10 Poor

I feel this volume could have been improved upon in many ways, but it was good to see an increased number of songs but the sheer lack of #1 singles is what lets this down.

Another hard choice went for Queen and Neneh Cherry

Went with Erasure - Drama for disc 1 and Comment Te Dire Adieu from disc 2.

 

Both I discovered recently. Drama is a great dance tune, a bit early eurodance and Comment Te Dire Adieu is a rather quirky dance (I think it might count as funky house tbh) tune I discovered recently and I like the drop in it, perhaps inspired in style by Inner City - Good Life. I think its the first time I have picked one of awardinary's worst 5 from the album as my fave :lol: . I think Michael would like it though, it sounds like one of the old eurovision entries he plays in plug.dj sometimes!

 

Obviously Pump Up The Jam is brill and is a close second for me!
