Matoma's been great, I loved False Alarm though it's only half as good as Running Out (feat Astrid S) in my opinion, I wish that had been the hit. You can also thank him for saving The Vamps careers :P

Joe and Jake deserved the Eurovision floppage if I'm honest, it was a poor entry. Saara Aalto is apparently thinking of doing Eurovish for us so hopefully she gets given a good song and saves the UK from eternal floppage :cheer:

I only know Donny Montell for Harry thirsting for him throughout the entire year tbh  his song wasn't very memorable.

Be The One was a great Dua Lipa song, though I liked the two UK chart hits even more.

Thanks Dan! :D I think I listened to Running Out once when it came out, it did sound pretty decent, and iirc Astrid S performed it when she supported Troye Sivan live but I could be totally wrong there  I will be forever grateful for him saving The Vamps' career tbh :')

I love the Joe and Jake song but I do think we can do even better next year, Saara would be excellent although I expect 2018 is more likely for her to enter for us

I wouldn't have thought the Donny song would be your kinda thing anyway I must admit! :heehee:

Rest assured, both Dua's UK hits are much higher!

Rise is very forgettable. It worked well as an Olympic related song but it doesn't sound like a proper single.

PILLOWTALK is so much better than what I expected from an ex-1D member, seeming that I've never properly got into any of their songs.

Heathens is the only Twenty One Pilots song I've enjoyed. Not the best from the Suicide Squad soundtrack though.

The Sound is a brilliant track. It actually reached number one in my chart. It was also their first song in my chart, however it debuted alongside Love Me. I'm delighted it did well officially too.

Sexual has been one of the surprise hits of the year. I got bored of this one quickly. Dyo has some better features from her Ms D days.

The Sound is one of the best rock tracks of this year, so anthemic and joyful, a huge improvement on what the 1975 have done before. Very pleased to see it here - I'd forgotten that you liked it!

I agree with all of what you've said! It's full of joy, really stands out amongst most hits these days too so it was great for it to become such a long-runner in the chart. Thanks Iz! :D

121 DNCE - Cake By the Ocean - 29-18-17-4-10-18-29-X (7 weeks)

122 Trevor Moran - Let's Roll - 1-2-3-8-16-23-27-35-X (8 weeks)

123 Benjamin - Hold On - n/a

124 Charli XCX - After the Afterparty (feat. Lil Yachty) - 35-5-11-15-20-… (5+ weeks)

125 All Saints - One Woman Man - 9-16-26-26-X-20-23-34-X (7 non-consecutive weeks)

126 MØ - Drum - 5-10-18-28-35-X (5 weeks)

127 Daya - Sit Still, Look Pretty - 25-36-X-33-18-18-7-14-22-30-X (9 non-consecutive weeks)

128 Fleurie - Hurts Like Hell - 18-7-13-18-26-39-X (6 weeks)

129 Daniel Skye - We Got Us - 17-9-12-21-31-X (5 weeks)

130 HomeTown - Roses - 25-6-19-32-X (4 weeks)

Actual Eurovision songs are done for a little while but the connections keep coming, and here's one at #130. Just a couple of days ago, it was announced that HomeTown singer Brendan Murray will be representing Ireland next year at the contest! I must admit, I don't really stan HomeTown like I have with many boybands, but I really love Roses, more than that chart run suggests. Brendan takes lead vocals on this track, and he shines with his unique voice and tone. Really lovely track, and whilst I'm not bothered about the fact HomeTown have already gone on hiatus, I'm interested in what Brendan has to offer going forward for sure.

Roses is jointed by a few more tracks that only spent a single week in the top 10 in this section! Right above it is the debut hit for Daniel Skye. We Got Us popped up on my iTunes recommendations and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. It's his second of three songs in this countdown, with only Smile still to come. Fleurie's Hurts Like Hell is just above, and I found this track through watching a show called Containment on E4. The subtle, emotional track was playing over a sad scene, and I loved what I heard so I Shazam'd it and downloaded it!

Daya's debut hit in my chart was a really slow burner, initially peaking at #25 in its first run in my chart, and even then that was a fair while after I first heard it in BJSC. It eventually got a boost into life when it began to take off in the US, and Daya's album, also titled Sit Still, Look Pretty, gave it that last push into my top 10. It's a really quirky pop track and it's a shame it's not become a hit in the UK! MØ makes her first appearance of four at #126 with Drum, a great track but definitely not as good as Kamikaze, Final Song or Cold Water, all of which are still to come.

Also representing the top 10 in this section are Charli XCX, All Saints and DNCE. After the Afterparty was another great song from Charli, whose album SUCKER impressed me hugely last year with a really good run in my chart, peaking at #1. It gave her a sixth top 10, although didn't match the #1 peaks of Fancy and Doing It. All Saints achieved three top 10s this year, and the first to drop out is instant grat, and later third single, One Woman Man. The song is just one example of many on their Red Flag album that shows off how great their harmonies are. DNCE make only one appearance in my top 250, with debut single Cake By the Ocean. The song took a short while to grow on me but ended up with a very respectable peak of #4.

The final two songs in my chart have had complete opposite fortunes. Benjamin's Hold On didn't make my top 40, although it was never pushed as a single and it has received what you could call good "trickle sales" over the year, and it's the second highest track not to chart. It's only one place below the first #1 of 2016 from Trevor Moran. Let's Roll cruised to an easy #1 in the first week of January this year, with a mammoth play count that week, but it tailed off quickly considering and I've barely revisited it since, so it's an odd case. It's the lowest #1 in this countdown and the lowest a #1 has ever been in one of my EOYs before! :o

Recommendation

Thanks very much again Pete! :D Seem we're opposites when it comes to Sigala :o

Yeah, seems like we prefer different styles of music when it comes to him :D

Anyway, nice to see False Alarm here, my favourite Matoma song! Nice to see Just Like Fire here as well!

oh my godddd R5!!! they were my obsession a couple years back, been to see them twice and met them both times, they are pretty awesome  good to see the fooo conspiracy in here a couple times as well! and then obviously the 1975 and twenty one pilots are such faves  excited to see what else is going to appear here!

Oh lmao I was gonna write my typical write-ups for all the songs I know but you've posted so much since my last post I'll have to do the short versions lmfao!

157 | David Guetta ft. Sia & Fetty Wap - "Bang My Head"

Great track from a great album featuring big stars. Guetta never fails to deliver!

156 | Katy Perry - "Rise"

Disappointing is an understatement. Had big hopes but they got crushed by this nonevent. :(

155 | Avicii & Conrad Sewell - "Taste The Feeling"

Great song but maybe a tad forgettable. Guetta & Zara had the better Fifa song tbh.

154 | Gwen Stefani - "Make Me Like You"

This new Gwen era has been strange but it's still been nice pop music. Nothing extraordinary for me though.

153 | Meghan Trainor - "Me Too"

Meghan's best song to date. Deserved to do so much better. Such a fun song!

147 | Zayn - "Pillowtalk"

Showed exactly what he's capable of and in my opinion it's probably better than most of what 1D has released.

145 | Sigala ft. Imani & DJ Fresh - "Say You Do"

Fun and simple. I love this and it makes me extremely happy whenever I hear it! Imani has the sweetest voice.

144 | Nathan Sykes ft. G-Eazy - "Give It Up"

Was really surprised to know this was by Nathan Sykes lol. Groovy and cool but ultimately forgettable.

143 | Twenty One Pilots - "Heathens"

Really cool! 21P came, saw and conquered this year for sure. Didn't expect them to follow-up 'Stressed Out' with two even better songs! Dark and edgy as well!

140 | Dua Lipa - "Be The One"

This was apparently my No. 1 played song on Spotify this year lol! I love it and Dua is easily my breakout star of 2016! Wish this had smashed!

136 | P!nk - "Just Like Fire"

Cool but I grew tired of it quickly like I usually do with P!nk songs. Generic and brings nothing new to the table.

134 | Joe & Jake - "You're No Alone"

One of the UK's best Eurovision songs in a while - only really beaten by Molly in this decade at least. Cute but faced some hard competition this year.

133 | NEIKED ft. Dyo - "Sexual"

Omg I played this so much when I first discovered it. It never fails to make me happy and it's really one of the surprise hits of 2016 for me.

131 | Matoma ft. Becky Hill - "False Alarm"

I love Becky Hill. I love Matoma. What could go wrong? Nothing. This is amazing.

127 | Daya - "Sit Still, Look Pretty"

I like this a lot, but definitely prefer 'Hide Away' to this. It's a fun song to sing to though.

125 | All Saints - "One Woman Man"

Possibly my favorite comeback of the year because I so was not expecting them to release anything as good as they did!

124 | Charli XCX ft. Lil Yachty - "After The Afterparty"

Possibly my least favorite comeback of the year lmao. Horrid and definitely not what I was expecting after the smash that was her last era.

121 | DNCE - "Cake By The Ocean"

Feels a bit like this year's 'Shut Up & Dance' for some reason. I enjoyed it for all the same reasons but also grew tired of it for all the same reasons lmao.

Hey Alanna! Thanks for commenting :D Oh wow, that's great! :o I was very late to R5, hence Smile only just appearing this year, but their album was a pretty solid listen!

The comparison between Shut Up & Dance and Cake By the Ocean is quite good actually, although I must say I prefer the latter to the former quite significantly!

119 Lady Gaga - Perfect Illusion - 23-3-7-17-35-X (5 weeks)

120 Jorja Smith - Blue Lights - 7-12-26-38-X (4 weeks)

Finally we get to our first section which is 100% top 10 hits! There'll be loads more of these now as only two non-top 10 hits are left to appear. 2016 wasn't a great year for BJSC for me, I didn't discover anywhere near as many songs in the contest as I normally did, but two of my favourite discoveries appear in this section. The first is at #120, courtesy of new artist Jorja Smith. Blue Lights is a well-written, inspired track which stood out in the contest for all the right reasons. The Dizzee Rascal sample at the end fits in well also - a very surprising discovery but a great one nonetheless. The other BJSC song is at #113, courtesy of Mike Perry. The Ocean crossed over into being a chart hit regardless so I'd likely have heard it eventually but it was pretty instant when I heard it, people say it's a weaker version of Alan Walker's Faded but I must say, I prefer The Ocean! Shy Martin's delicate vocals really complement the production well too. I guess we can count Sabrina Carpenter's On Purpose at #111 as a BJSC track too, but I discovered it before it was sent and even briefly considered it myself! The track is great anyway, a huge pop chorus with great production.

Speaking of BJSC, I've never really done THAT well in it myself but my biggest hit, by far, came in 2013 when I sent Australian DJ tyDi. He returned this year, and collaborated on two new tracks with two different artists - BOTH of whom I'd sent to BJSC as well! :o The first was Olivia Somerlyn on a song called Only, which didn't make much of an impression on my chart but nonetheless was a nice song. The second was a collaboration with Greyson Chance, the first artist I ever sent. Oceans was released earlier this year, and soared to a top 5 peak in my chart, Greyson's first top 5 since his 2012 #1 Sunshine & City Lights. Greyson achieved two further top 5s this year, both of which are still to come!

It divided opinion when it got released in September but I always liked Lady Gaga's Perfect Illusion. Weird pronunciations and a strange structure definitely alienated a few people and I wasn't sure at all on first listen but it roped me in by the second, a very solid track and my favourite from Joanne too. Sadly it didn't hold up too well in my listening habits though and it fell quite quickly. Just above Gaga is Years & Years with their final appearance this year, courtesy of the re-issued Desire, now with added Tove Lo. Desire ended up at #139 in my EOY last year so it's done one better this time round, although it fails to match the EOY #10 peak of Eyes Shut. Nonetheless, it got a new peak in my weekly chart and a couple more weeks in the UK top 40 so I'm glad it got re-released.

When I read that Hollyoaks star Twinnie Lee Moore (aka Porsche McQueen) was releasing music, I was a bit worried. Soap stars turning into musicians doesn't exactly scream "great music", but Twinnie surprised me with her debut single Cool. It's a lovely laidback country-pop song, absolutely nothing like I expected but in a good way! Oh and I was stood behind her at Lucie Silvas' gig in January :o Also a surprise hit for me was Millionaire by Digital Farm Animals & Cash Cash. I listened once and wasn't really fussed but it grew on me with repeated listens and I ended up finding it totally irresistible! Nelly is certainly capable of bringing the jams when he wants to.

The final two songs come from tracks that I would have loved to be chart hits but sadly didn't end up that way. Jennifer Lopez released the Meghan Trainor-penned Ain't Your Mama in the middle of the year and despite it getting decent international success, radio snubbed it in the UK. Once again, if she were a younger/more "relevant" artist, it would've been huge I'm sure. Finally, whilst I did like the Jonas Blue cover of Fast Car, I must say I prefer the Tobtok version, which of course never became a hit in the end  River's vocals suit the track better than Dakota's and I like the more laidback production. Nonetheless, both versions are good, this one just has the edge for me!

Recommendation

Hi Joseph

Ain't Your Mama is actually kind of amazing, JLo has been kind of rubbish for about five years straight now unfortunately but I enjoyed that track quite a bit. I bet it could've been a hit if it got proper support too as you say.

I was massive on Perfect Illusion for the first couple of weeks but I did get sick of pretty quickly and I do now find it one of the weaker tracks from Joanne. Saying that, I love how high energy it is and of course the key change is life changing.

I think I would rank Drum as MOs second best for me now behind Kamikaze which definitely had a catchier tune. I've never been huge on Final Song or Cold Water though, both are overrated but especially the latter!

:D

My favourites of the last few lots *_*

The Ocean and Fast Car will both be appearing in my EOY top 50 :music: Also loved the remix of 'Desire' better than the original.

Hey Josh! :D Thank you for commenting!!

Ain't Your Mama is such a bop  J-Lo's not really been up to her previous standard since Live It Up, although that track is my favourite of hers :kink: really should've been a hit :(

Oops think you may be disappointed over which MØ songs do the best in my countdown then :kink:

Millionaire is amazing :music: really gets in your head!

Desire is nice as well, but I don't think Tove Lo adds a great deal to it :(

Thanks very much Pete  Tove doesn't really add much to Desire I agree, but it gave me a chance to revisit it so I can't moan at all!

101 Demi Lovato - Body Say - 27-5-7-15-20-27-32-X (7 weeks)

102 Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello - I Know What You Did Last Summer - 16-33-X-22-20-19-20-27-36-X-39-X-8-5-8-16-22-30-34-X (16 non-consecutive weeks)

103 Selena Gomez - Kill Em With Kindness - 26-15-13-10-13-17-21-29-X (8 weeks)

104 Niall Horan - This Town - 24-5-9-14-17-23-28-38-X (8 weeks)

105 Greyson Chance - Hit & Run - 38-4-8-17-31-40-X (6 weeks)

106 OneRepublic - Wherever I Go - 35-20-4-9-15-23-34-X (7 weeks)

107 Kelly Clarkson - Piece By Piece - 8-10-22-29-38-X (5 weeks)

108 MØ - Kamikaze - 8-19-33-X (3 weeks)

109 Christopher - Heartbeat - 20-8-11-18-… (4+ weeks)

110 Allie X - That's So Us - 29-3-7-13-18-25-33-X (7 weeks)

I'd heard a couple of Allie X songs through BJSC at various points before I heard That's So Us, and none of them really made an impact on me, just standard blogpop to my ears. I listened to That's So Us not expecting to like it, but it's a really quirky pop track with uplifting lyrics and a catchy hook, so it soared right up to the top 3 in my chart, a well deserved chart peak! Christopher (Nissen) makes his first appearance of two in the entire countdown, with Heartbeat at #109. It was the fourth single from his third album Closer, and only the second song of his at the time that I'd really paid attention to - the first is still to come! It's a really nice ballad, not sure my chart run really does it justice actually.

MØ pops up again with Kamikaze, which is actually a 2015 song really but I first heard it when she supported Years & Years on tour earlier this year, so it counts towards this year! It's a great track, again my chart run is quite harsh for it, I like it a lot more than those three weeks suggest! Kelly Clarkson delivered an emotional stripped-back performance of her album's title track Piece By Piece on American Idol earlier this year and as a result, it received lots of media attention and well-deserved praise. The 'Idol Version' is the version that I charted, a beautiful and touching track, my favourite Kelly song in quite a while! Just above it is Wherever I Go, my favourite OneRepublic song to date. I wasn't totally sure how much I liked it at first but it grew on me rapidly and it became their first top 10 hit in my chart.

Hit & Run was yet another grower for me. Greyson's new music is a massive departure from his debut album and prior EP, so it took a bit of getting used to, and I remember previewing Hit & Run on iTunes when it came out and being really disappointed, so I didn't buy it. When I eventually got around to listening to the EP, it grew on me with each listen and I really wish I downloaded it at first! On the contrary, it was no surprise to me (or anyone else I'm sure) that I really liked Niall Horan's debut solo single. This Town is a really lovely acoustic track, although like PILLOWTALK, it didn't quite live up to 1D's best tracks.

The final three songs in this section are all from artists who are no stranger to my chart. Selena Gomez has enjoyed her best era to date by a mile, scoring four top 10 singles out of four and a #1 album. Kill Em With Kindness was the fourth and final of those singles to be released, a great choice I thought, really catchy track and always stood out to me as an album highlight! Her former fellow Disney star Demi Lovato is just two places higher with "buzz single" Body Say - quite why she never pushed this properly is beyond me, a really solid track and very different to her previous singles, in a good way. Finally, Shawn Mendes makes his first appearance in my countdown, in collaboration with now ex-Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello. The song took a while to peak with me, it's definitely his weakest single for me, but it's good still and it's a huge shame it didn't make the UK top 40!

Recommendation

Body Say <3 <3 <3 will be appearing in my chart too, think it's my fave Demi song now lmao

Grew to really like Kill Em With Kindness and Kamikaze is fab *.*
