Andrew's ReviewNow That's What I Call Music! 18 or Now 18 was the second and final release from 1990 and boasted 6 #1s out of 32 tracks.

Now 18 had alot of grounds to make up being only the second and yet the final release from 1990, so #1s were chosen from different times of the year. Of course, some #1s had to be omitted, and they were notably Englandneworder – World In Motion; Partners In Kryme – Turtle Power and Maria McKee – Show Me Heaven.

Despite this minor setback, Now 18 was able to include some of the best artists of the time such as Elton John, Roxette, Sinéad O'Connor, Status Quo and Kylie Minogue to name just a few of the 32 chosen.

Graduation Day had arrived for Wilson Phillips, Righteous Brothers, Sting, Betty Boo, MC Hammer - all of whom we would hear from at least once more in the series.

However, Now 18 was just a passing moment in the series for the likes of Steve Miller Band, Public Image LTD, Talk Talk, The La's, Bass-O-Matic, DNA feat. Suzanne Vega, Blue Pearl, Kim Appleby, Bombalurina and Adventures Of Stevie V.

The cover for Now 18 is really something else. Just a blue background with "18's" scattered about, and big bold text at the front. There really is no concept or theme, it seems almost like a blueprint, a sketch of what could have been a final result, but it is the final result, and not a very good one at all.

As you will notice, the 3 coloured balls used in the previous 17 covers had been removed. It was the end of an era for that design.

At this time in the series, the designers were in the experimental stage, trying out new ideas and seeing what worked best, and they wouldn't know for sure until Now 20.

I think the musical selection is very very good. I've many favourites from this album, and to order them in priority is a tricky task, but I have done, and I don't have many worst songs from the album, but some I found not a very good listen.

 

Artwork Rating: 3/10 Extremely Poor

Such a poor design here, this was still the transition phase where a new logo was still being trialled, but this design is lacking any real design or creativity.

 

Disc 1 Favourite: Elton John – Sacrifice

A personal discovery much later than it was released, but was an instant hit with me and it's received many plays over the years too! A great Elton John hit and one of my favourites from him.

 

Disc 2 Favourite: DNA feat. Suzanne Vega – Tom's Diner

Another very obscure little pop some which may have easily been forgotten. I discovered another version of this song in 1998 from dance artist T-Spoon with their version of the song titled Tom's Party. The original from DNA is much better and a very mellow song to chill to.

 

Overall Rating: 6/10 Good

Not a bad listen, certainly a good reflection of what was available at the time. I was very pleased to see an increase in #1s and in the overall quality of the music. I am still not pleased with the cover, and I wish some more imagination could have been invested to creating a more intelligent design, but other than that it's ok.

Disc 1: Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U! This is one of the best ballads :heart:

Disc 2: DNA Feat Suzanne Vega - Tom's Diner tbh only one I proper know

Overall 5/10 not a lot I know

Artwork Rating: 2/10 ~ This just lacked absolutely any original identity or creativity. Clearly a bit of a transitional phase until they settled on the iconic design that we know today.

 

Disc 1 Favourite: The La's - 'There She Goes' ~ I remember being introduced to this song at quite a young age, through one of my favourite films of all-time the 90s remake of 'The Parent Trap'. So this song makes me think of that wonderful film. Just a lovely song to relax to - very pleasant vocals, melody and instrumentation all wrapped into one.

 

Disc 2 Favourite: DNA feat. Suzanne Vega - 'Tom's Diner' ~ I feel like this is probably one of those tracks today where people forget what it's called but could instantly recognise it. The 'duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh' part is just SUCH an earworm! Every time I listen to this song I just know that it'll be stuck in my head for hours after. I enjoy the general ~vibes~ of this, it's a very cool song.

 

Overall Rating: 8/10 ~ One of the best editions we have had in ages :o There are loads of standouts on both discs; this edition onwards is where I'm becoming far more familiar with a lot of the songs and liking them. The awful design prevents this from being any higher.

Hard choice so many good songs on this album, went for Pet Shop Boys and TalkTalk
