January 6, 20178 yr Shape of you is bit bland and boring. Castle on the hill is way better but im not a big Ed Sheeran fan at all. He's way overrated.
January 6, 20178 yr Shape of You is quite the bop. I've had it stuck in my head all day, easily one of my favourite tracks of his with Photograph. Unlike others here, the lyrics what put me off Castle on the Hill. It reminds me of 7 Years in the way that it pulls on the heart strings using nostalgia as a technique. I really hate he part when he describes what his other friends are doing. 'One's already on his second wife, One's just barely getting by.'
January 7, 20178 yr I've never been a fan (although I liked 'Sing') but I'm loving these two singles. Easily his two best for me already!
January 7, 20178 yr Shape Of You sounding very good actually. The other one not so much, sounds like a Mumford & Sons song (which is almost never a good thing).
January 7, 20178 yr both of the songs are actually okay but they're not anything new nor special, shape of you sounds like a soundcloud song by a barely signed / unsigned artist that is decent but rly never takes off, castle on the hill has been done before with the nostalgia and general feel and the lyrics being overpoignant

I really hate he part when he describes what his other friends are doing. 'One's already on his second wife, One's just barely getting by.' I agree with this, the lyrics are off-putting and not good. 'Tasted the sweet perfume of the mountain grass' is a personal favorite of mine for how cringeworthy it is. How quasi-deep :puke2: I feel like I'm going back to disliking Ed like I did during his first era.
January 7, 20178 yr Castle On The Hill might be one of my favourite Ed songs already :o Shame it's doing the worst out of the two songs. Shape Of You is horrific, so bland imo. It's already smashing though so fair play to him I guess
January 7, 20178 yr Well, I'm surprised! I normally can't abide his music but I actually like both. 'Castle' is far superior imo.
January 7, 20178 yr Really like both of these, 'Castle On The Hill' has the edge for me, the chorus  has potential to be one of my favourite Ed songs! It doesn't sound anywhere near as much of a hit as 'Shape Of You' though so a bit surprised it's doing nearly as well so far, expecting it to fall away fairly quickly a la Drake's 'Pop Style' while 'Shape Of You' continues to smash. 'Shape Of You' sounds so much like Sia's recent hits as literally everyone has said ~ but it manages to sound on trend while not being exceedingly basic (I mean I do still love both 'Cheap Thrills' and 'The Greatest' so sounding like them isn't a bad thing) so I'm on board with it at the moment.
January 7, 20178 yr Author Loving both of these so far, but "Castle on the Hill" does have the edge for me too. The chorus and the build up to it is just amazing, I could already picture festival crowds going nuts for it in the summer. And I love that it's about his hometown as well! In fact yesterday on our local news bulletin (I'm in Essex, so about an hour or so away from Framlingham in Suffolk, where he's from), they did a piece in Framlingham where they were playing it to residents and local school kids and they were all kind of proud and patriotic of their own, and I love that. "Shape of You" has its charms too. I can see why he originally wrote it for Rihanna as it's got her sort of beats and feeling to it!
January 7, 20178 yr Both of these tracks are EVERYWHERE right now. Heard them multiple times in the shops and on car radios etc today, I can't seem to escape them  Definitely very rare to see a song have such a big buzz around it - certainly can't remember an instance like this in recent memory! When was the last time you experienced a song being practically omnipresent and MASSIVELY popular?
January 7, 20178 yr When was the last time you experienced a song being practically omnipresent and MASSIVELY popular? Adele - 'Hello' perhaps! The buzz around these singles has been massive.
January 7, 20178 yr Probably Hello! That was everywhere around me instantly! Not too sure on both songs. I liked them on first listen but I am already getting bored of them oops!
January 7, 20178 yr When was the last time you experienced a song being practically omnipresent and MASSIVELY popular? Practically all of last year with One Dance ;)
January 7, 20178 yr I'm liking both of these. Shape Of You is relevant and a huge smash, will easily be one of the year's biggest sellers. Castle On The Hill is great because I love the idea of a song about growing up in Suffolk that sounds straight out of 2004 (specifically like Irish Son by Brian McFadden) becoming a global smash! I've been following Ed since 2009 and it's just bizarre to me how big he's become. I wish his old friend Leddra Chapman (who I discovered at around the same time) had achieved one tenth of his success :drama:
January 8, 20178 yr Shape Of You: I really don't like this, it's so bland and repetitive and sound very similar to Cheap Thrills by Sia. Castle On The Hill: This is 100x better than Shape Of You. If Ed is going to rule the top 2 for the next few months then I'd rather this be the no.1. The same concept of 7 Years though
