First block of 10 up include 3 veteran acts, Nile Rodgers, The Monkees and Paul McCartney. I've excluded all actual oldies (more than a year or 2 old) so this is all new stuff to get a good overview of the new music that excited me in 2016. As always in my charts, it's pos/highest pos/wks on chart/song/act/sales...

91 12 14 TOOTHBRUSH DNCE 220450

92 7 10 HOW LOVE BEGINS DJ Fresh & High Contrast featuring Dizzee Rascal 219800

93 8 10 OVERCOME Laura Mvula featuring Nile Rodgers 215150

94 10 13 SAY IT AGAIN Frances 214750

95 14 13 YOU BRING THE SUMMER The Monkees 209050

96 10 10 KEEPING YOUR HEAD UP Birdy 207450

97 10 11 MAKE ME LIKE YOU Gwen Stefani 206700

98 9 9 CHAMELEON QUEEN Cat’s Eyes 204950

99 9 10 NINETEEN HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-FIVE/ ORIGINAL VERSION Paul McCartney & Wings v Timo Maas & James Teej 203050

100 10 11 24K MAGIC Bruno Mars 199100

DNCE's biggest hit is at 102, Cake By The Ocean, so I marginally preferred the other Jonas hit at 91. The Macca track is a dance remix of the 1974 album track, but it has been re-imagined proper, as opposed to a half-arsed update. Bruno usually turns up in my my year-end when he releases stuff, and has just scraped in with his retro bit of fun. Cat's Eyes is more a Radio 6 track, but it's 60's-indie and gorgeous, Gwen Stefani returned with some good stuff after years away, and Make Me Like You is the first of 2 top 10's to feature in my chart.

Birdy came back in a dance groove which I approved of, and The Monkees came back with good new stuff after a gap of 30 years, all of the tracks either revamped oldies (which is how the late Davy Jones features) or they were gifted new songs by fellow younger artists a full 50 years since they debuted and had my full love. You Bring The Summer was written by Andy Partridge of 70's/80's act XTC and is joyful tuneful nostalgia for me. First of 2 on the list. Frances had another good year, this time a lovely ballad, and Laura Mvula got her second year-end Top 100 track a few years after the first, helped by the ever-present Niles over the last few years. That leaves a good dance track featuring Dizzee Rascal which somehow didn't cross-over big enough.

My pick that you need to hear:

First of 3 for Robbie, first of 5 for 80's veterans ABC, a couple from adverts (Bo and Lemaitre), Gwen's second and final track of the year, a 90's rock return as the Red Hot's get a year-end top 100 for the first time this decade, the gorgeous Kwamie Liv track joins newies offaiah and Gallant, both deserved UK chart action and just missed out for the most part due to streaming.

My favourite song so far is Trouble what a great dance song

I also love 24k Magic, How Love Begins, Keeping Your Head Up, Say It Again, Bourbon and The Girl Is Mine too!

Great chart so far John!

I'm kind of hoping to see some Medhelnia action in here, maybe I'm being a bit optimistic though :heehee:

My favourite #1's of yours are also The Pop Kids and Faded, the former especially is such a strong comeback after a few years out of the spotlight. It's nice to see The Girl Is Mine and Closer appear in your top 100, they're both great dance tracks.

Hi John!

Some good tracks appearing so far, The Girl Is Mine was a surprising hit was glad that took off eventually.

Trouble is a great reworking of an otherwise bland song, another track I'm surpised made the top 40.

Closer is really good too, hear that a lot on adverts!

Next batch, the very under-rated Max Jury has a gorgeous ballad at 71, and a country dance crossover for Audien and Lady Antebellum is at 72. FKA Twigs should have had a crossover hit by now, and I thought Good To Love was the one to do it, just lovely. The first track off the new PSB album was a dance banger, largely instrumental, and I bought the 12 inch vinyl at the Royal Opera House when they played live - first of 7 PSB's in the list. I'm a fan!

Still in my chart, and climbing up this list now it's a bonafide European smash, it's Human at 75 - I bought it the minute I heard it the day it was released onto itunes, too good to hang about on! Eurovision at 76, hooray, and the likeable Amir for France, a great pop song. The Weeknd has 3 on the list, I Feel It Coming is the first, but also still high in my charts and climbing this list fast, bound to go top 50 in the end. Daft Punk help, for the first of 2 times. A great Buzzjack SC track at 78, from Willa, and a fab comeback single from the ever-varied and fab Primal Scream, who first made my year-end in 1990. Finally, the annoyingly stroppy Frank (with Beyonce) failed to make tracks available to download or youtube, you had to buy the whole album. My policy is not to be forced to buy albums for one track (it's been in operation since I was 14) so this gorgeous ballad is one I still don't have to play and enjoy whenever I want. Your loss Frank! Get over yourself :P

It's the Aussie Eurovision track that wuz robbed of a win by the new stupid voting system at 61, fab Dami. It's the best DNQ of the BJSC at 62 (apart from my own of course! ) and a gorgeous hangover sorta-xmas track from winter late 2015 from Kim Wilde at 63, just lovely. That huge chart-topper from Clean Bandit is at 64 and still climbing, cos it still sounds great, and another Eurovision entry from Barei at 65 gave Spain a rare contender. The huge, albeit low-key cool, Ibiza is at 66, expecting it in the top 2 year-end for the UK thanks to year-long streaming (and the reason why Clean Bandit won't be, even though it's bigger and better).

ABC's second track in the chart at 67, a very orchestral, cinematic non-single off the fab Lexicon Of Love II, and Florence's only entry this year is good, but not as giant as her Number One top 100 ranked track of 2015 (Queen Of Peace). Banks' Gemini Feed at 69 is a goodie, and Betsy's Lost & Found likewise a non-charting goodie, the former a Radio One target audience, the latter a Radio Two target audience. Fortunately I refuse to fit into target audience categories :P

Completing the lower-half of my chart, this batch is led by Jeff Lynne, ELO legend returning with some cracking tracks after decades away, and 45 years since he first troubled my charts as part of The Move along with Roy Wood (Chinatown was the track). Most of the singles were listed in 2015's Top 100, but he had one tucked away for 2016, When The Night Comes. The massive UK chart-topper from the Chainsmokers is at 52 (and still climbing fast) so safe to say in total sales it will be top 30 eventually, at least.

A Robbie album track, sounding very like ELO's Don't Bring Me Down, is appropriately slightly-lower down at 53, name-checking 70's kung-fu movie star Bruce Lee, who died very young, and suddenly, to become a major cult star posthumously. The second of 3 for the Robster. That other Daft Punk collaboration from The Weeknd is at 54, and like Robbie and Closer and Redbone, at 55, all gaining sales fast and heading for the top 50. Starboy is fab, and a fab title (a Legion Of Super-Heroes name), Redbone was the name of a Native American band who sang about the Witch Queen Of New Orleans, and now a song title for the fab Prince-sounding Childish Gambino.

Cobi, a James goodie BJSC entry, a sort of semi-reggae Gospel Hozier, is at 56, while The Monkees second and final song on the list is a great song written by Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher at 57, but in a Monkees-60's-stylee, and you can tell which parts were written by Noel and which by Paul fairly easily I think (yet to be confirmed of course, but sounds obvious to me). All Saints flop comeback, commercially, was pretty decent for me, giving them a first listing in a decade with One Strike at 58. Flume just missed the 100 (at 112) with the Tove Lo combo, but make the grade with Kai, and the fab Never Be Like You. I'm still waiting for them to make that chart breakthrough! Finally, another band big on here in 2015, Hurts, still criminally ignored in the UK, saved a final single to peak into 2016 and qualify for this year's chart. Wish they would sell loads!

Hey UV thanks for the choices and comments! I got tingles when I saw Dami do her song for the first time, that's always a good sign (unless I've been sitting on my foot too long, thats just pins n needles  ) Such a shame All saints didn't get the success they deserved :(

cheers!

Into the top 50 we go with a Pet Shop Boys fest, the official single the cool Twenty-Something at 50, and the singalonga dance anthem Happiness at 46, which has still not been gifted a single release, pure madness! At 47 they did a classy retro-synth, yet contemporary, collaboration with 70's EDM legend Jean-Michel Jarre. Not only does he make my year-end 100 for the first time since 1977's Oxygene Part IV (brilliant record), but he has another track higher up! Pet Shop Boys still have another 3 to come, yay!

The quite-big-in-Europe Josef Salvat fails to gather any UK success, very annoyingly, as the fab Paradise should have charted here. ABC, being over 30, quite obviously no chance of charting but at the least the album did well, and their third entry of 5 is at 42, the lead single Viva Love, total classic ABC. The first of two for Kishi Bashi, just as last year, keeps my obscure (but very talented) fave in the 100, with another two tracks at 119 and 130. This one is my BJSC DNQ, the ambitious and sprawling EDM epic Ode To My Next Life.

Elton John keeps guesting on Bright Light Bright Light's tracks, to no avail, as he just can't break through big with his joyous old-fashioned classy pop, but at least that's the 2nd year in a row he made the grade. Another BJSC goodie from FMLYBND is at 48, and a club choon from Nero at 49 - how did Into The Night not hit!? That leaves the gorgeous Clare Maguire ballad Elizabeth Taylor at 44. Classy!

Top 40 time, and it's a right old mix of stuff, from the terrific cool Eurovision song from Poli Genova at 31, to the fab retro 70's soulfunkrap of the very young RAT BOY at 32, who needs to break it big. Tom Chaplin has his solo debut single at 33, sounding very much like a very good Keane record (rather obviously, it would though), and Kishi Bashi's mellow, and gorgeous debut single off the new album is at 34. I prob should have entered Can't Let Go, Juno for the BJSC instead of the album track, but I didn't want to be obvious!

The first of 2 mighty pop smashes for Dua Lipa, Blow Your Mind (Mwah) is more of a sales hit than a streaming hit (go figure!) but it's fab (mwah) anyway (mwah) at 35, mwah! Turin Brakes have had occasional top 100 entries over the last decade and a half, so it's a welcome return at 36 with Keep Me Around, which had a pretty current sound and should have charted. No Wyld, from BJSC, keeps mdh's profile high in the year-end, and Let Me Know is pretty exciting at 37. UK smash, European smash, that marmite song 7 Years is high in my chart at any rate, 38. It captured my mood at the time...

Royksopp also pop into the year-end list occasionally, and back they be after a year or two off, and again with Susanne Sundfor, Never Ever - but not the All Saints song, it's a fab EDM upbeat number. Just creeping into the 40, it's another BJSC, the terrific Amanacer from Bomba Estereo, top notch latin dance grooves, love it.

Nice to see Twenty-Something & If Love Was a Crime here as well!
