South London rap prodigy Nadia Rose has taken fifth place on the BBC Music Sound of 2017 list.

The 23-year-old, who has won praise for her whip-cracking, witty wordplay, hails from Croydon and is the cousin of grime artist Stormzy.

The annual award aims to showcase the best new artists of the coming year, and is voted for by 170 DJs, music critics, radio producers and writers.

"That is epic!" said Rose on learning she had made the top five.

"Being on the longlist was an honour. This is just... wow. I really wasn't expecting that."

Rose, who began making music in her spare time while working in a betting shop, has scored viral hits with songs like Skwod and Tight Up.

She describes her sound as "really bassy, full of fun and full of energy".

'Tight Up' sounds really good, and of course she was the vocalist of Kideko & George Kwali's 'Crank It', great to see her make the top 5 :D

Well hello there R1 discussion thread!

For those who are new to this thread, this is basically the place where we discuss Radio 1 and all it's good things including TOTD's and many other things. Look out for my weekly posts of R1's Best New Pop show hosted by Cel Spellman every Sunday, it does get quite a bit of discussion.

And to kick things of with the TOTD's this year:

TOTD 2nd January: Nadia Rose - Tight Up (feat. Red Rat)

TOTD's in the first week are normally from BBC Sound Of artists, a bit awakard this year because you hear the TOTD's on the first from Clara's show rather than Adele's show and that the fact that a Sound Of artist will picked over Major Lazer & Nicki Minaj or Ed Sheeran.

Here's the full 2017 Sound Of list:

· Anderson Paak

· Cabbage

Thought I was going mental by hearing this constantly! Bloody irritating now, they still play it consistently even now it's been off the playlist for months?

I thought Snakehips would've been Top 10 too considering that is still hammered

Good to see Fade in the Top 20 though!

6. Protoje - Who Knows (feat. Chronixx)

Yeah, I'm not surprised either to see it so high up the list. I've mentioned it before, but for a song that wasn't even a hit, Radio 1 seem to be obsessed with it, and I still hear it pretty much once a week on R1, it all seems a bit bizarre! They do get like that with certain tracks though, a couple of years ago it was M83's 'Midnight City'.

Interesting that there's so little rock or indie representation in that Top 20, just 'Stressed Out' at #4 and 'Good Grief' at #19. I'm sure five years ago there would have been many more guitar-based tracks in the higher regions of that list.

A couple of schedule changes to remind you and that is Annie Mac is on maternity leave so MistaJam is filling in for her on Monday-Thursday and Danny Howard is doing Friday night's. Both will continue their other regular shows.

Also some changes to the Residency shows:

BBC Radio 1 today announced the new line up for BBC Radio 1’s Residency - the strand that brings listeners the biggest names in dance music, from the underground to the arena - with Deadmau5, Jessy Lanza, Eats Everything, Helena Hauff and Metrik joining the Residency team.

Radio 1’s Residency incorporates two shows on a Thursday night between 10pm-midnight, and midnight-1am, featuring some of the freshest DJs and producers from the UK and around the world.

Kölsch and Will Atkinson will continue to form a part of the line-up of DJs on rotation, as will Logan Sama who continues with an extended slot.

The new line-up marks the end of Steve Angello, Oliver Heldens, Heidi, George FitzGerald and Louisahhh’s regular slot on BBC Radio 1’s Residency.

The new line-up is as follows:

1st Thursday of the month, beginning 5 January

10pm - Deadmau5

12midnight - Will Atkinson

2nd Thursday of the month, beginning 12 January

10pm - Kölsch

12midnight - Helena Hauff

3rd Thursday of the month, beginning 19 January

10pm - Logan Sama

12midnight - Jessy Lanza

4th Thursday of the month,

beginning 26 January

10pm - Eats Everything

12midnight - Metrik

Deadmau5 says: "I am very excited to bring mau5trap and friends to BBC as part of the Radio 1 Residency. You can expect a selection of songs I’m playing out, songs from artists I like, songs from my label, songs not from my label... maybe even songs from me. See you on 5 January!"

Jessy Lanza says: “I’m thrilled to be a part of the Radio 1 residency line up for 2017. I can’t wait to share the music I’m listening to and excited about.”

Eats Everything says: “I'm pretty speechless that I have been asked to host my own show on Radio 1. It's fairly surreal and a bit of a shock. My first actual introduction to dance music was the Pet Shop Boys show on Radio 1 in the very early nineties and I have been listening to Pete Tong since I was 13 - so now to say that I might see him in the Radio 1 Canteen and perhaps share a cup of tea with him after we have clocked in is mindblowing. I promise to try and bring good music, some questionable humour and a silly accent to the airwaves.”

Rhys Hughes (Head of Programmes, BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra) says: “I’m delighted to welcome Deadmau5, Helena Hauff, Jessy Lanza, Eats Everything and Metrik to the Radio 1 dance family – yet again illustrating we are the high water mark of global DJ talent.

“I would like to thank Steve Angello, Oliver Heldens, George FitzGerald and Louisahhh for their contribution over the last year. I would also like to personally thank Heidi for her fantastic dedication to Radio 1 over the last eight years.”

Yeh only 4 in the top 20 for me - Twenty One Pilots, Lukas Graham, Christine and Bastille.

I for one love Protoje and am happy it's in the top 10 - great song from an underplayed/supported genre. Radio 1 have always had their own mind when it comes to music support and I think it's a good thing and they don't always support 'hits', again a good thing!

Interesting to see in such a dominant year for them little mix are nowhere to be seen

TOTD 3rd January: Jorja Smith - Carry Me Home (feat. Maverick Sabre) (BBC Music Sound Of 2017 Artisit #4)

Sad to see Oliver Heldens depart from the Residency, his show was really good! And Heidi! :o feels like she's been around forever!
