I wonder whether R1 would still have been playlisting Echo & The Bunnymen if they'd been together all along, rather than splitting up and getting back together? I presume Jo Whiley was lobbying quite heavily for them, I remember her being quite excited about their comeback.

 

I saw another playlist from 1998 that had Paul Weller's 'Brand New Start' on it, so if I was wrong about 'He's The Keeper' that would have been his last appearance.

The Hottest Record is what it says a song that's a huge premiere around the world some of which become huge daytime playlist staples or evening show underground tracks! Radio 1 still play Foo Fighters so that would be the modern equivalent.

 

I can see why they continued to be played on radio 1 for so long, just looked them up on spotify and their style is quite similar to the likes of Arcade Fire now, especially a song like 'Bring On The Dancing Horses'. They definitely were ahead of their time in being one of the ones to start what we would now recognize as indie and alternative rock.

Sadly I don't think there's enough English in the J Balvin song for R1 to want to playlist it. They'll only do it if it goes to #1, which it won't. Fortunately the song has already proved itself to not need R1 support.
