Andrew's ReviewNow That's What I Call Music! 24 also known as Now 24 was the first of 3 releases from 1993 carrying 3 UK #1s like it's predecessor Now 23 and a total of 37 high charting hits.

Such artists as Take That, East 17, Annie Lennox, Genesis and Ultravox were featured along with many others. Now 24 may have only sold in the region of 300,000 copies which was less than other releases at the time, but it was still an achievement and it was enough to earn a platinum certificate.

The absent UK #1 on this occasion was the kareoke favourite I Will Always Love You as performed by Whitney Houston from the blockbuster movie The Bodyguard. This song deservedly should have been included as it lasted 10 weeks at the #1 spot!

A number of newbies to the series from Now 24, and they included debuts from Shaggy and Robin S as well as from Shabba Ranks, Lulu, Cappella, Dina Carroll and Lenny Kravitz.

Now 24 offered "5 minutes of fame" for the following artists - Sub Sub feat. Melanie Williams, Snow, Stereo MCs, West End feat. Sybil, Sunscreem, Monie Love, World Party and The Beloved. None have been heard of since.

For both Hue & Cry and Genesis, they both had the priveledge of having their singles re-appear in the main series, having both been featured earlier on in the 80s.

A very original cover for Now 24, and it works very well having rarely seen a white background for a cover design again. At this point, it seemed that the sky theme was becoming a bit overused, although shown at different times of the day with of course different clouds, it was still the same concept, and new ideas were beginning to be needed.

Indeed, there are some good points about Now 24 but unfortunately for me, it's not as good as some of the other Nows released previously. The music selection is a good choice, but I don't believe there was much good music available at the time which would explain a drop in sales. I do like the cover as it is very plain and original and easy to the eyes.

 

Artwork Rating: 5/10 Poor

Not really grabbing my attention as we see yet another sky theme being used. Again the sheer lack of use of colours is what let's the artwork down for this volume. If more detail was added to the background in the sky it might have had a much higher rating.

 

Disc 1 Favourite: 2 Unlimited – No Limit

Robin S came close, but my real favourite is this hit from 2 Unlimited. No Limit was the most well known single by the Dutch producers and was a UK #1.

 

Disc 2 Favourite: Ultravox – Vienna

A beautifully written song, which is very atmospheric to listen to. Surprising to know it never made the UK Top 10. Such an anthem!

 

Overall Rating: 6/10 Good

Overall I like this volume, it has lots of genres feature and sounds positive throughout. Could have scored even higher if Whitney Houston had been included for her signature hit I Will Always Love You.

Vienna by Ultravox was a re-issue. I'm not sure why it was re-released. It got to no.2 in 1981 and was famously kept off the top of the chart by a dreadful novelty record,Shaddap You Face by Joe Dolce.

 

Sub Sub completely changed their sound and their name and became the indie band Doves. They had two no.1 albums.

 

The best songs are all on CD2 by Depeche Mode,Duran Duran,Genesis,Ultravox and Peter Gabriel.

Disc 1 alone makes this one of the best Now albums for the time. Vienna's inclusion on disc 2 is surprising, didn't realise it was re-released?

Disc 1: 2 unlimited - No Limit what a song still listen to it from time to time :heart:

 

I also adore Lenny Kravitz on disc 2 both excellent tracks :wub:

 

Overall and artwork wise id say 6/10

I like the silver colours of the cover.

 

Went for Young At Heart for disc 1, which was a bit of a hard decision with No Limit and Got 2 Let The Music on that album which I love too, and Show Me love and Exterminate are also very good dance tracks I think, but Young At heart I remember a lot from when I was younger being played on the radio and I really liked it. It made #8 in 1984 but imo deserved finally going to #1 in 1993 (because of being re-released after being on an advert) which cemented its status as a classic.

 

For disc 2, went with Ordinary World, one of Duran Duran's best songs imo.
