FAQs

What is streaming?

For streaming related FAQs read this thread.

How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50'. The desktop top 50 will often update before anything else so is always worth checking if the website is not up to date.

Other useful links:

Spotify Website [top 200]

Kworb [top 200 and extra data]

LivePopBars [top 200]

Spotify Web App [top 100]

Note that the Spotify Website will usually update before external websites (Kworb, LivePopBars). Also, the top 100 via the Spotify Web App may be updated before the website.

How often does the chart update?

It should update once every day, although this is not 100% guaranteed.

How many plays on Spotify equals one download sale?

150 plays. However you cannot simply play a song 150 times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day (in terms of what counts to the chart, Spotify will let you play a song on repeat 150 times if you really want to!!). This used to be 100 plays but the ratio was recently revised by the OCC.

How much does Spotify contribute to the chart?

Streaming as a whole contributes approximately 80% to the singles chart, although this will be reduced as the new ratio comes in. Spotify counts for approximately 70% of all streaming sales, so doing well on Spotify is essential for doing well in the chart.

Why is my fave not doing well on Spotify?

Is it being promoted on one of Spotify's major curated playlists? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists, with over a million followers. Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience ('Love My Life' by Robbie Williams being a big example at the moment). Also keep in mind that it takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

Shocking that Calvin's new song didn't go straight into the top 50. Mind you it would have if you take out Drake and Ed's album tracks

'Heatstroke' is still doing worse than 'Slide' on day 1 when you take out album tracks (there's approx 20 album tracks ahead of it).

If we compare the numbers too 'Heatstroke' has 146,921 streams and 'Slide' had 198,235.

I think it's a combination of 'Heatstroke' being released too soon after 'Slide' and the general consensus that it's a weaker track.

...and Slide is just hitting its peak now, so it seems an odd time to release a new single.

Heatstroke though is very summery

Still dont understand how Spotify counts towards the charts somehow Youtube not.

Both are easy to measure and are music 'consumption'

As has been said many many times before, YouTube is VIDEO streaming.

The OCC quite sensibly have decided to only count AUDIO streams, otherwise songs would be getting big chart boosts simply because people want to watch the video.

I think Calvin is planning to release a track every four weeks now until the album comes out?
Calvins peak seems to be over chartwise, seems to have lost his way. Used to be able to release a top 3 single with each release!

He needs to release some more proper bangers, none of this slow crap

I hope Calvin doesn't lose his way in the way David Guetta has - subsequently by going down the downtempo route! I think Calvin is doing it better though. Can imagine cruising along the highway in California to "Slide" and "Heatstroke" - but then it does feel very Americanised for our top Scottish DJ!

I don't think he's doing an album?

He said he'd be releasing ten songs this year, so if he releases a new song every month that takes us up until the end of the year.

Both 'Slide' and 'Heatstroke' are great I think, can imagine them sounding great in the Summer months! I do think Slide will have more longevity, very popular track around right now. It's not even as if he's gone tropical house, he's gone proper R&B.

Kendrick as well smashing it.
