Is it not on any playlists? That's probably why..

If one person had streamed NMSS an extra 151 times yesterday, would that have made it top 50? Or does the single person daily cap stop counting on Spotify after a certain number of plays (like it does officially?).

 

Interesting if it's the former, as then people could still technically help their songs up the charts in a big way by tipping them into the top 50 and give them that extra visibility.

I'm pretty sure the Spotify charts cap their listeners. I remember back in the early days of Spotify in Australia, there were occasional attempts to manipulate the chart through spamming plays. The streams got onto the ARIA Streaming Chart but not the in-app Spotify chart. You could get more conclusive proof if someone from a low population country gave it a shot, but I'm mostly confident that they cap listeners (probably at 10 plays).

Nope, spot on. I know anything over 0.7 plays a week per person or whatever it is don't count towards the chart, but I have no idea if say 100 plays of a track by one person all go onto it's Spotify total anyway.

 

One way to find out for sure could be to find a completely obscure song and spam play it 2,000 times or whatever, and see what happens to its total play count.

I noticed something on this note when Lady Gaga's 'Perfect Illusion' came out. At first, the day-to-day gains in its total play count (orange line below) were much greater than its 'official' plays listed on the global Spotify chart (blue line):

I would expect it got a lot of repeat plays from fans the first day, so my theory was this reflected repeat plays being capped on the global chart, but counting towards its total plays. I also recall reading around then that Katy Perry's 'Rise' was gaining enough plays to be in the global top 200, yet wasn't appearing, and Katy's also someone with dedicated fans who might have her song on repeat.

 

There are many other possible explanations (eg the difference being offline plays that don't get submitted in time for the chart, or that the 24 hour periods of the charts and play counts are really off-sync, or some sort of error happened), and it's also possible there's a cap for total plays, just a larger one (say, 100 plays/person/day), but I find this quite plausible, at least. I'd be quite interested to see the results if anyone puts an obscure song on repeat!

So what happens to capping if you say, played the main version 10 times, and then played a remix 10 times (say, Human by Rag'n'Bone Man and the Rudimental Remix)?
