April 17, 20178 yr The Official Top 100 biggest Hip-Hop Songs of all time Packed with classics by Jay Z, Eminem, 50 Cent and Kanye West, but who finishes top of the pile? By Rob Copsey April on BBC Radio 1Xtra marks MC Month; and to celebrate, the station has exclusively revealed the UK's Official Top 100 Hip-Hop Songs of all time. The Top 100 is, of course, based on Official Charts Company data, combining sales (physical and download) and streaming equivalent sales. At Number 1 is none other than Drake's mammoth single One Dance, which spent a whopping 15 weeks at Number 1 in 2016. With combined chart sales of 2.1 million, the track bests second place I'll Be Missing You by Puff Daddy ft Faith Evans by some 400,000 equivalent units. The highest placing Number 2 hit is in third - Eminem and Rihanna's huge track Love The Way You Lie. This chart really is all about when tornadoes meet volcanoes with big tracks such as the Fugees' Killing Me Softly sitting back-to-back with Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise. Elsewhere names such as Run DMC, Jay Z, Nelly, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Kanye West and Outkast feature on the amazing list. Luckily for everyone out there, you will be able to hear the UK's Official Top 100 Hip-Hop Songs in full once again very soon on BBC iPlayer.
April 17, 20178 yr At least from 'Trap Queen' and above are all over 1m. I've also added in which songs have sold over 600k and 400k, thanks to the BPI certifications. Two Eminem songs on the cusp of new certifications then!
April 17, 20178 yr Author What I find amazing is that a #58 hit 'Jumpman' has outsold numerous top 10s and even number ones on this list!! Just shows how streaming equivalent units have inflated sales figures.
April 17, 20178 yr Love Lockdown 😍 Forgotten classic!! Not many songs over 20 years old there!! I rediscovered "Love Lockdown" recently - forgot how much I loved it!
April 17, 20178 yr 'One Dance' isn't remotely a hip-hop song lmao... I've said it before and I'll say it again: Drake is a pop singer, not a rapper. He's both a singer and a rapper, and he makes music of many genres. The majority of his music is hip-hop, most of his hits have been the more pop / R&B / dancehall ones though.
April 17, 20178 yr ^Also all of those above Run DMC v Jason Nevins “It's Like That” have sold >1.2 million (as that was 2X Platinum certified in 2013). Some estimates: Eminem ft. Rihanna “Love The Way You Lie” 1.45 million (~1.3 million paid-for sales; 15 million streams) Eminem “Lose Yourself” 1.4 million The Fugees “Killing Me Softly” (officially 1,268,157 up to Nov 2002) Coolio “Gangsta's Paradise” (officially 1,246,306 up to Nov 2002 - although weirdly only certified 2X Platinum in 2014). Both probably around 1.42-1.43 million? Drake ft. Rihanna “Too Good” 1.087 million
April 18, 20178 yr Listened to this on the radio, so many classics in that list old and new! I think the definition of Hip Hop was stretched somewhat going by some of the songs... Not sure how Where is the Love was excluded when Shut Up was included (Black Eyed Peas)?
April 18, 20178 yr One Dance is a deserved #1 there, feel a bit guilty to say that I still unashamedly love it to this day <3 Also nice to see Trap Queen (which was great in its time) and The Monster really high! Fingers crossed the latter can go on to be a million seller.
April 18, 20178 yr Author Most of Nicki's actual big sellers were all pop songs ('Super Bass', 'Starships', 'Bang Bang'..) and presumably 'Anaconda' hasn't sold enough to make the list
April 18, 20178 yr So many classics there. I remember when Outkast "Hey Ya!" was released and that was a time of really crappy single sales before downloads were included in the charts. And now thanks to downloads and recently streaming, "Hey Ya!" could become a deserved million seller on chart sales. :D
April 18, 20178 yr Most of Nicki's actual big sellers were all pop songs ('Super Bass', 'Starships', 'Bang Bang'..) and presumably 'Anaconda' hasn't sold enough to make the list This list is clearly based on the artists and not the songs. They must be considering Nicki Minaj to not be a hip-hop artist for some reason. (Although actually having said that, BEP having one song on there while several higher sellers aren't there goes against that theory. In any case, it's clearly a massively inconsistent list, there's no way it makes sense to include 'One Dance' but not 'Starships').
