Saw this tonight and believe ALL the hype! Gaga is everything she's being praised for, so so natural and effortless in everything from the beginning "normal" stuff to the actual drama of the film, all of it feels almost like you're actually watching her rather than her acting. She acts like a seasoned veteran and she NEEDS that Oscar, there's one scene in particular where I was just screaming in my head give her the Oscar.

Bradley Cooper is equally as incredible, perfectly captured all the facets of a really interesting character and you felt a range of things for him as well as Ally throughout rather than them both just fitting a certain mould for the film. He has Best Actor on lock surely, like of course Gaga was absolutely incredible but he was so brilliant so that he didn't get outshone by the Star in the title, he's just as much as the Star. Both of them are utterly incredible leads who more than deserve the Oscars, their chemistry as a pair is electric too from the first time their eyes lock.

Cried a good few times throughout the film, both happy tears and sad ones! If you are even a casual Gaga or film fan you HAVE to see this, utterly incredibe and I was incredibly struck and affected by it. I'm going to have to watch it again when it comes out properly for sure.

Cooper better be good and win! He's been deserving of an Oscar for a while now!

I think the high praise and people getting caught up in the hype set the bar too high. Firstly, from a feminist point of view I found the story difficult to connect with, Bradley Cooper was absolutely incredible, but his character I found very difficult to relate or sympathize with in the way I think the film wanted the audience to. I appreciated that the film highlighted the issues with substance abuse but he was relentlessly horrible to Ally throughout, mostly rooted in jealousy, bitterness or snobbery moreso than his addictions, so when films (often directed by men) romanticize these kinds of destructive relationships or abuse cycles it always confuses me a bit. Lots of people found this romantic and I respect their opinion if that’s how they felt, but the whole ‘Love and stand by your man whatever the outcome’ wasn’t clicking for me.

Gaga was good for the most part and I think, when she's singing in the film she can really emote and on a powerful level that many singers only wish they could - it's clearly where she feels most at home - the final scene she did brilliantly for example. But her still acting still needs a lot of work in my opinion, where I feel like you can see her thinking about her every move. The plot itself was cute but I felt like it was something I've seen quite a few times before, Walk The Line and What's Love Got to Do With it for example effected me more overall and they have the same story. The music is mostly great, although the underlying message that pop music is inferior annoyed me a bit. Shallow is actually one of my least favourites on the soundtrack and I loved the one she performed on SNL and the snippets of other songs on the album I can’t wait to hear in full.

No more Halsey cameos pls.

(Don't hate me Gags stans, I did like it and I LOVE her, I just saw a few problems that I felt I had been overlooked by some)

Plotwise the pop music snobbery was probably my only issue, but I think it was fitting to the type of musician that Jackson is, it felt "real" to his character so I get why it was there. That was my favourite part about both characters, that they felt very real. They were flawed people in a flawed relationship trying to pick up the pieces, not these unattainable glamorous celebrities who were far removed from real life, and I think Gaga feeling natural to me really lent itself to that. I suppose it also makes a valid point about the industry, particularly today, that you often have to be a certain way to succeed. I suppose (I definitely have to spoiler this lmaoo

it mirrors Gaga herself a bit, making pop that didn't always show her full vocal talent (I suppose Ally's debut was her The Fame) and then the end was sort of a "moment" for Ally at Jackson's memorial in the same way that Gaga had serious moments later in her career like the Super Bowl national anthem and Sound Of Music tribute at the Oscars.

I may well be caught up in the hype as a stan, but now that I've seen the film, pretty much all the praise they're heaping onto Gaga, Bradley and the film makes total sense. I found myself, when formulating a post of my opinion, thinking of quotes I'd seen and it was hard not to just parrot them as some of them put it so perfectly (even though I tried my post is still probably an amalgamation of a lot of those :kink:).

There is one better definitely song than Shallow and I'm hoping that goes down as the "moment" of the film, it's a toss up between the two for me. I do ADORE Shallow and think it's really powerful but I feel like maybe when the soundtrack is out and we have them all in full, it'll be one of those where there's a lot of faves that creep up on me. I got great vibes from a good few of the ones we only heard bits of and I can't wait to hear them all properly!

I get that aboot actors like GaGa eho think about eevery movement. You KNOW they are acting and are laboriously trying.

They come across like this,

Not expectin much from a GaGa flick tbh

It's (idk whether to spoiler this but will do anyway in case people don't want anything, this isn't anything to do with plot just the song)

very 90s Whitney power ballad, totally timeless. That's the best comparison I can make, it doesn't sound dated or trying too hard to be Whitney though so it's not a comparison I'm making to drag it down or anything! It sounds very much like those huge Diane Warren power ballads but it was written by Natalie Hemby and Hilary Lindsey who are more known for country hits. I suppose it's got a fleck of that because it has the real heart and honesty that country has, but it's not a Joanne sounding song. It's bloody fantastic anyway and absolutely knockout!

I need this to sweep these categories over award season:

Picture

Director (I loved Bradley's direction in this film SO much, possibly the biggest surprise of the film for me)

Actor

Actress

Cinematography

Sound mixing or editing (idk the difference but the one that the music related films do well in)

Song (either Shallow or INLA with both getting noms)

Editing

Also on top of wanting those wins, I hope it can get nominations in supporting actor, Screenplay + a few more techs as well

Does Gaga have a genuine chance when it comes to Best Actress? Just thinking about her getting it has me legit emotional.

Definitely! The race atm is her vs Glenn Close, with Olivia Colman a potential spoiler if she goes lead for The Favourite. I think it's all gonna come down to whether ASIB is an unstoppable awards sweeping box office smash or whether Glenn's overdue narrative will be so prevalent that it'll stop Gaga from winning

I think she's very likely to get a nom and if she's snubbed for a nomination at this rate it would be beyond shocking (like I think the reaction will be double the amount worse than Amy missing in 2016 and that snub got some hella strong reactions)
