Official Top 20 Biggest Selling Singles Of All Time By Female Artists

By Rob Copsey

If there’s one thing the Official Singles Chart would be pretty dull without, it’s female singers, so let's count down the UK’s Official Top 20 biggest selling singles of all time by female artists.

Leading the way is a woman whose pop career spans over 50 years: Cher. Her Number 1 hit Believe, which spent seven weeks at the summit in 1998, has sold 1.82 million copies in the UK (excluding streams). It's somewhat fitting Cher should top this list; her latest reinvention as a prolific social media/anti-Trump activist has introduced her to a new generation and she does have one of the longest careers in the music business – her first hit was over 50 years ago.

Behind Cher is another celebrated voice – the late, great Whitney Houston. Whitney, who passed away in February 2012, spent a whopping ten weeks at Number 1 with I Will Always Love You, taken from the soundtrack of hit movie The Bodyguard. The track, which was written and originally recorded by country star Dolly Parton, has sold 1.638 million copies in the UK alone.

Catching up to Whitney fast, it's a more recent entry from Adele, who places third with Someone Like You. The track, which has sold 1.637 million, took over the world in February 2011 and logged a total of five weeks at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart.

Coming in fourth is another one of the world's most recognisable voices - Celine Dion with her global smash My Heart Will Go On. Released in 1998 as the theme to Titanic, the song spent two non-consecutive weeks at Number 1 in the UK and has sold 1.58 million to date. Celine makes a second entry on the list, at Number 9 with her 1994 single Think Twice (1.37m).

Oh baby, baby, you knew Britney had to be in here somewhere, right? And here she is completing the Top 5. Her debut single …Baby One More Time spent just two weeks at Number 1 in 1999, but it sure shifted plenty of copies while it was there. Its sales tally stands at 1.56 million – it sold over 460,000 copies in its first week on sale.

Elsewhere in the Top 20, the Spice Girls feature twice with their 1996 chart-toppers Wannabe (1.38m) and 2 Become 1 (1.14m), as does Rihanna with We Found Love (1.41m) and Only Girl (In The World) (1.16m).

The oldest song on the list is Jennifer Rush's 1985 hit The Power Of Love (1.45m), while the most recent goes to Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe, released in 2012 (1.35m).

I don't We Found Love and Price Tag really count as they feature menton but slay ladies.

I am glad Mariah's Xmas song made the list. I hate the majority of her material but that song is incredible.

Well done to Cher and Spice Girls. I am shocked Carly Rae is here but well done to her :)

LOL Price Tag higher than Blondie - Maria which is comparable hit to Cher - Believe lets say? Big LOL

It's so strange to see all these incredible women in this list but no sign of Madonna.

Lol agreed although she has the title of 'Best Selling Female Artist in the UK', a much more prestigious thing to have...

Leona was 21st when they did a top 40 in 2014. A few shimmies around in the top 20 since then but the biggest change is Mariah jumping up 6 places from 24 to 18, sending out I Feel Love by Donna Summer. Not sure how well Leona does on trickle sales.

I bet quite a few of those do well on trickle sales, Torn and Can't Get You Outta My Head are two you still hear on the radio and used on TV relatively often.

I'd expect of that list Whigfield to be one of the next ones to go, I feel like the four below it will keep picking up more trickle sales while it will stall.

This is what I'm guessing the rest of the million sellers in the list look like:

01. Believe - Cher (#1, 1998) 1,820,000

02. I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston (#1, 1992) 1,638,000

03. Someone Like You - Adele (#1, 2011) 1,637,000

04. My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion (#1, 1998) 1,580,000

05. ...Baby One More Time - Britney Spears (#1, 1999) 1,560,000

06. The Power of Love - Jennifer Rush (#1, 1985) 1,450,000

07. We Found Love - Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris (#1, 2011) 1,410,000

08. Wannabe - Spice Girls (#1, 1996) 1,380,000

09. Think Twice - Celine Dion (#1, 1994) 1,370,000

10. Never Ever - All Saints (#1, 1997) 1,360,000

11. Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen (#1, 2012) 1,350,000

12. Hallelujah - Alexandra Burke (#1, 2008) 1,300,000

13. Price Tag - Jessie J ft. B.o.B (#1, 2011) 1,220,000

14. Can't Get You Out of My Head - Kylie Minogue (#1, 2001) 1,190,000

15. Torn - Natalie Imbruglia (#2, 1997) 1,180,000

16. Saturday Night - Whigfield (#1, 1994) 1,180,000

17. Poker Face - Lady Gaga (#1, 2009) 1,180,000

18. All I Want for Christmas is You - Mariah Carey (#2, 1994) 1,170,000

19. Only Girl (in the World) - Rihanna (#1, 2010) 1,160,000

20. 2 Become 1 - Spice Girls (#1, 1996) 1,140,000

21. I Feel Love - Donna Summer (#1, 1977) 1,100,000

22. Bleeding Love - Leona Lewis (#1, 2007) 1,100,000

23. Diamonds - Rihanna (#1, 2012) 1,100,000

24. Roar - Katy Perry (#1, 2013) 1,100,000

25. Firework - Katy Perry (#3, 2010) 1,080,000

26. Rolling in the Deep (#2, 2011) 1,080,000

27. Fame - Irene Cara (#1, 1980) 1,070,000

28. I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor (#1, 1979) 1,060,000

29. Jar of Hearts - Christina Perri (#4, 2011) 1,060,000

29. Bad Romance - Lady Gaga (#1, 2009) 1,040,000

30. Fight For This Love - Cheryl Cole (#1, 2009) 1,030,000

33. Don't Cry For Me Argentina - Julie Covington (#1, 1977) 1,000,000

Adele's 'Make You Feel My Love' could well be an all but confirmed million seller by now, too.
