Work would have smashed regardless, it was one of THE songs of last year. Unique as well. The biggest floor filler of last year for females too (for males it was Panda).

She needs to release another urban track I think.

I read somewhere that her next album is going to be more pop.

Then why hasn't she for 5 years?

Work was released mid week and wasn't on Spotify for a while. If she did a Friday iTunes/Spotify release she'd probably manage #1s easily if timed well. Why do you hate the good sis Rihanna so much?

Big mistake. Urban music + Rihanna would be a Spotify smash.

If Rihanna wants to get really amazing streams it'd be best for her to stick to urban singles. A Rihanna feat Quavo track would probably be a big top 2 hit.

I haven't enjoyed her music since she released Diamonds. I was the biggest stan though when she released SOS, OGITW, WHYB...

Just pointing out she's released at least 11 singles that haven't got #1 since 2012, plus a number of features with Shakira/Drake/Calvin Harris etc too...

'This Is What You Came For' debuted with over 100k sales to get to #2. It was just very unlucky to collide with the peak sales of 'One Dance'. Most other weeks of the year it'd have been an easy #1.

We could say that about lots of songs though. The fact is, it wasn't the most popular song during any of the weeks it charted.

You're not wrong but I don't see why this is a big deal when she had three huge hits last year, regardless of peak...

Basically, if Rihanna wanted a UK #1, she could easily achieve one. It's not as if Work wasn't #1 in several other countries.

Work was #1 in the US for 10 weeks, right?

Yes, and Canada and several other countries. The timing of a mid-week release and late Spotify add harmed her peak here but I don't think it means Rihanna's #1 possibilities are somehow now gone as Rob suggested.

Yep this is the point, she releases mid week, did Tidal exclusives and so on. If she wanted a UK #1, she could easily get one by lining up the release properly but she hasn't bothered to try for years.

I guess when you stream in numbers she has especially in the US why bother chasing meaningless #1's and stats.

Work was a streaming #1 hit in the UK! Think it got blocked by 7 Years in the end which obviously had far greater sales. So it's not like she's incapable of getting a #1 when that happened just a year ago.

Yeah I think the rihanna conundrum is that she releases when the hell she wants where she wants

She gave her album for free

Then she was tidal exclusive

Not to mention random mid week releases

Yes her star has fallen slightly but if she was traditional release etc I think currently outside of Adele she only woman that could realistically debut number 1

Similarly to Rihanna, Beyonce could too, but hasn't done a traditonal release in a very long time either.

Beyonce and Rihanna almost transcend music, Beyonce especially. Think its an exaggeration to say their stars have faded. Just neither as released conventional pop songs in a while, as people have noted.

Beyonce had the most talked about album last year and Rihanna the biggest club hit. Not too bad.

Beyoncé's star has probably brightened if anything, conventional single releases aside she feels more relevant than ever and her stadium tour ticket sales only prove that.

In the current climate Rihanna could definitely debut at #1. Work would've been #1 but was stuck at #2 with a messy release, yet ended up as one of the biggest hits of the year. She's the biggest female streaming force, I think, so that would help her a lot as well!

I doubt Rihanna will release until Q4 anyway, maybe even later.

I doubt Rihanna is losing much sleep about being #2 instead of #1 in the UK. Work still sold 1 million and at the end of the day she could get a #1 with a proper release as has been said. I think it's perfect to say her and Beyonce almost transcend music, they permeate society in general and always have talking points when they release. They don't have to abide by the rules and drop on iTunes at midnight on a Friday after teasing on social media for a month, they can just drop an album when they want in whatever style they want. UK charts aren't the be all and end all when you're two of the most iconic females of the 21st century. They're true artists who can make an impact on the world and leave an imprint in time, not flash in the pan trend chasers who release the same songs ad nauseam to get hits, they don't need to do that.
