I just can't begrudge Portugal of all countries winning when this is the first time they've ever managed above 6th. Total Leicester City moment!

On one hand its nice for us to finally win, but with this song? I know taste is subjective and I know a lot of people that liked it, but seriously... we've sent great songs before that went completely under the radar. The televote especially is jarring, I smell a bit of a sympathy vote for him

No question. Absolutely was.

Music is music. Whether he meant it or not, he basically said that only the type of music HE makes is real music. That's plain disrespectful, any music is real music and said 'disposable' music has saved MILLIONS of lives and made millions of people happy.

Can we just remember English is (at least) his 2nd language, he must have been in shock after winning and he was just expressing how happy he was that people connected with a song he was so passionate about, he wasn't slagging off any other specific song, he was commenting that his preference wasn't big staging and he preferred the focus to be solely on the music and the meaning behind it. A bit unnecessary maybe but hardly worthy of public outrage.

Lovely song as well, not my first choice for a winner but reminded me of music from disney films, really enjoyed it.

Anyone wanting to indulge in some 'disposable fast food music' is welcome to join me in listening to this classic:

Also, the entirety of the top 3 got their best results ever!

This is really quite nice for the sake of the contest, especially that triumphant return for Sunstroke Project (even though Run Away is still better, it's more than they deserve for providing such fun to Eurovision).

I called Portugal inept when it first surfaced. It sounded like any number of songs that would have come bottom of the mid-00s semis. Yet somehow this one picked up a whirlwind of traction in a contest that was mostly upbeat in the end. It's going to be a weird one looking back, but I guess that's very fitting for Portugal, they've never really played by any Eurovision rules about what's popular.

"If one day someone asks about me

Tell them I lived to love you

Before you, I only existed

Tired and with nothing to give

My dear, listen to my prayers

I beg you to return, to want me again

I know that one can’t love alone

Maybe slowly, you might learn again

My dear, listen to my prayers

I beg you to return, to want me again

I know that one can’t love alone

Maybe slowly, you might learn again

If your heart doesn’t wish to give in

Not to feel passion, not to suffer

Without making plans on what will come after

My heart can love for the both of us"

Looking at the lyrics, this could pass as an Ed Sheeran album track! He says his music is real music, but it's just as cliche and predictable as every other pop song out there, if not more cliche.

In summary, he's chatting total contradictory bullshit.

Nah mate he knew exactly what he was saying. "Fast food music" is not something you mistranslate.

There were so many people who would've gotten much better results if sympathy/pity vote existed in Eurovision. Oh and Austria would have never finished last with 0 points this year.

The song was gracious and stood out massively. This was largely what made this win possible. I doubt people were like 'oh it's nice, let's vote him and make portugal win'. Have you all seen the reaction to the song here or anywhere?! You either love it or despise it.

That's not what he said at all? He didn't say his preference wasn't for big staging and he preferred the focus be solely on the music and the meaning behind it.. what a reach

He said it's a 'victory for real music, music that actually means something..' total snob.

UGHHHH

So pissed. Worst winner in the 63 years of Eurovision. His awkwardness feels so forced and his elitist speech at the end sealed it all :/ I can't believe THAT won on televotes and jury, I was thinking that Bulgaria could smash the televote and snatch it. Moreso OG3NE being BLOODY 11TH when I bet on them beng top 10 :')

Good points though: us top 15 (I hoped for more but 15th for us is basically a win) as well as Azerbaijan, Netherlands and France, plus Romania being top 10.It would have been lovely for Blanche to snatch top 3, Moldova were awful and it was embarrassing how they whored out that epic sax guy who was never even funn. Best of all, Spain last!!!!!!!!!

No, he said (verbatim cause it doesn't quite make sense):

"I want to say that we live in a world of disposable music, fast food music without any content and I think this could be a victory for music with people that make music that actually means something.

Music is not fireworks, music is feeling. So, let's try and change this and bring music back, which is really what matters".

It's Eurovision. For me, his song won because it sounds like something from La La Land, Portugal have never won before and the public ran away with the emotion of giving it to a country out of pity and 'for the heart of it'. It was 100% not the best performance or song of the night.

Look, I really think that left a bitter taste in the mouth and I'm with you that it's a poor end to what should be a celebratory occasion but I just don't think you can be as absolutist as that. Sure, people were really captivated by the sincerity and the timeless 50s style jazz song but that isn't unable to be squared with "good song" because really, one person's "good song" is another person's "bad song" and all the variations in between.

When you get down to it, being able to measure all those 26 (and even 42) different songs ought to be impossible because taste and music are just so impossible to quantify and measure objectively so but we do it every year in the spirit of friendship, togetherness and unity and stuff like the Portuguese weirdness winning is just what Eurovision is all about. Fine, you don't have to like it but if it won both the televote and the jury vote then, by the very nature of its win it can only be because it was the best performance of the night!

I mean, I was not the biggest fan of this song I think that's fair to say but when I saw it in the semi I think at last I got it. It's just got that timeless quality and feels like a song you've known for years when you hear it even though it's a brand new song. And whilst I've got a bit of egg on my face over Portugal I have absolutely NONE over Italy's comparative flop! Sometimes "things just happen because they happen" is a piss poor reasoning for something (no shade to whoever said that, I'm just feeling pretty unashamedly smug about that right now, it'll wear off by morning!).

I just can't begrudge Portugal of all countries winning when this is the first time they've ever managed above 6th. Total Leicester City moment!

I'm freezing cold here in this shade  But I stand by that sentiment, even though I was clearly wrong about Italy. Sometimes things do happen for no apparent logical reason, at least in my life they do all the time!

There are many Eurovision results in history that I look back on and can find no logical or understandable reason for their underperformance, like Lucie's televote result for example...really struggling to find any meaninfgul reason as to why that incredible performance could only rack up 12 points.

Italy, however, isn't one of these situations, the performance really didn't come alive on stage like I imagined it would, it didn't feel anything like the winner aura I got from it at the London preview party. But as somebody else said, a large bunch of excitable Eurofans spurred on by the odds are going to give bigger cheers and support to certain songs than others, whereas the reality is often very different.
