When You Believe (Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston) | 7.28 Beginning the top 20 with a bit of a shock in the shape of one of the biggest name collabs ever, the track from 'The Prince of Egypt' bows out very early. It received a mix of high and very low scores which explains its position, and this also reflects its critical and commercial performance. The song was awarded the Academy Award for Best Original Song but is perhaps too saccharine for the casual listener here. We lose another collab, this time with George Michael. The song was originally performed solo, but Michael's vocals were added on in time for the song's release of Whitney's greatest hits album. It was originally set to feature MJ so who knows how much better or worse it might have fared with him!
August 11, 20177 yr Not gutted about that bottom 3. 'Step By Step' and 'Exhale' would be there for me and 'Love Will Save the Day' wouldn't be far behind. Solid averages already though! Surprised to see 'When You Believe' out already, however, this rate was so strong that it would probably be quite low for me too. It's a lovely song though and their voices work together so well. 'If I Told You That' is the first casualty for me. I know I gave it a 7 but that was because I hadn't heard the song before the rate. I'd say I'd give it one of my 10s now; a 9 at the least. I've had it on repeat since; such an infectious chorus that partly-disguise some quite heartbreaking lyrics and, again, Whitney's vocals work so well with George's. I love the bit near the end where they slow the pace of the vocal with the "Would you be there for me?" verse. Not at all surprised to hear MJ was originally meant to appear on the song - I find George's vocal sounds quite like him at parts. Got to say that the collab trumps on the solo version.
August 11, 20177 yr I have step by step a 10 !! The bridge is pure fire !!! You can stay! *.* Ooh I'm astonished to see When You Believe so low. :o I'd have assumed it'd be one of her better known and loved songs here. If I Told You That is decent, but not a huge loss to be out this soon.
August 16, 20177 yr 'If I Told You That' is one of my ultimate Whitney favs. Seeing it so low is heartbreaking :(
September 23, 20177 yr Author I know it's been some time rFcnGLFGbL8 17. Where Do Broken Hearts Go | 7.86 18. Queen of the Night | 7.52 LET'S DO THIS PROPERLY NOW. Next up we lose the fifth and final single from The Bodyguard soundtrack. 'Queen of the Night' is an uptempo, rousing, pop-rock number with atttitude, sass and everything we love from Whitney. It is overshadowed by many of the other songs on the soundtrack but it packs its own punch and delivers with every listen. It charted in the UK but was never released as a single in the US and so was ineligible to chart, which is a shame because it soared on radio airplay at the time. And we also say goodbye to Broken Hearts, a song that at the time Whitney didn't even want to record and later she went on to say she "hated the song". But commercial success proved to override this, and it eventually went on to become a #1 single for her, so all love was not lost, becoming her seventh consecutive #1 - a record still to be broken to this day. It's a pretty safe, yet emotional ballad with Whitney's silky vocals littering the track with glorious moments throughout.
September 23, 20177 yr 'Where Do Broken Hearts Go' suffers from being butchered on X Factor numerous times. I like the verses but the chorus, whilst nothing wrong with it itself, just reminds me of all those X Factor performances and I can't shake that off. 'Queen of the Night' suits Whitney so well but I've just not revisited the song enough to give it a better score than I did.
September 23, 20177 yr Where Do Broken Hearts Go is lovely but for me it doesn't quite reach the heights of some of her other ballad singles!
September 27, 20177 yr Author Anytime you feel danger or fear, then instantly I will appear tXKZxrdPUU8 15. I'm Every Woman | 8.10 16. Didn't We Almost Have It All | 8.09 We're already up to 8.xx averages! The second single from 'Whitney' starts the 8.00s and notched up a Grammy nomination for song of the year back in 1987. Spending a few weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, it was a massive success for the artist, and showed a perfect calm after the storm of the single that came before it. Funnily enough, Entertainment Weekly published a list of Whitney's greatest songs following her death, and this ranked #16 there too, so I guess we have strong, reliable opinions here! I'm Every Woman is an iconic song, known to many and a signature song for Whitney despite it being a cover version from Chaka. It reached the top 5 in the US, while Whitney herself was at #1 with another song (still to come) and cemented itself as a worthy cover version. She pays homage to Chaka towards the end of the song and it remains an empowering anthem sung with vigor and warmth from Houston.
September 30, 20177 yr Author I've been searching for something like this h9rCobRl-ng 13. Million Dollar Bill | 8.38 14. Run To You | 8.32 Another Bodyguard track now, Run To You wasn't a huge sales success for Whitney but it did come from an already massive selling album and did moderately well considering this. Nominated for the 1993 Academy Award for Best Original Song, the music video features a pure, angelic Whitney running through the clouds alongside clips from the parent film. We also lose Whitney's official final single from a studio album, and the last song released in her lifetime before her death. Written by Alicia Keys, performed on X Factor, a rousing party track with a beautiful sentiment it combines many aspects of what made classic Whitney great. It was a moderate hit for her, and has become a bit of a staple hit in clubs since. All-in-all it was a positive and refreshing vibe for her and a worthy song for her to bow out on.
September 30, 20177 yr 'Didn't We Almost Have It All' and 'Run To You' are both absolutely breathtaking, and 'Million Dollar Bill' was such a triumphant comeback for her!
September 30, 20177 yr I love the album version of QOTN , so much better than the single remix. Yes !! The album version is a funky rocky En Vogue Free Your Mind style stomper. The single remix ruined the song. Same goes for My Name is Not Susan, totally muffed it up by remixing it, when it was perfect already ! I love Where Do Broken Hearts Go & Didn't We Almost Have It All. Out far too early !
