Hey everyone, I’m Alpha. and I’m your host for this, the 8th Heat of Super Eurovision III. As my previous username O Mie gives away, Eurovision has been a passion of mine for a fair few years now and was the reason I joined this forum in 2013, so I’m delighted to be this week’s host. And with that introduction out of the way, let’s see what we’ve got in Heat 8.

This week’s countries include: perennial underachiever Portugal who managed to turn their fortunes around this year by picking up their first win and breaking the points record (and I think they would have done so even under the old system) in the process, remarkable stability in the form of Hungary with 7 consecutive qualifications and to a lesser extent Serbia who have been unlucky enough to miss out on a place in the final 3 times despite never finishing lower than 11th in a semi, and everyone’s favourite mid/late 90s superpower Croatia whose results have been rather less spectacular in recent years. As for Armenia what can I say? Qele Qele, Jan Jan, LoveWave, Fly With Me, what a spectacular run (look, just forget 2013 ok….)

Please PM your votes to me Alpha. (remember the dot!) by 23:59 on Monday 14th August and the results will take place the following evening. None of these countries have a complete set of 10 entries so please rank each country’s entries starting with 12 then 10, 8, 7 etc. as far down as it’ll go for that particular country.

Buzzjack, start voting now!

When Armenia get it right they get it SO RIGHT (and even so wrong it's right on occaision) and for all that they've got a tendency to send utter rot, Portugal ought to be a pretty interesting four-way fight between Vania, Flor de Lis, Suzy and Salvador.

And I might as well nail my colours to the mast that I am supporting Oro for the winner of the whole of Super Eurovision. The live version especially is utter beauty

You know, I was thinking the eventual champion of Super Eurovision should come from this heat too!

Bring it Kati *.*

HERE I AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM

First thought was 'Why is Rob singing 'The Promise' in the Eurovision forum, is he drunk?' but then the penny dropped!

Got 6 votes in so far, but it would be great if we could get to double figures! Reminder that the deadline for votes is 23:59 tomorrow (Monday 14th)
Voted too now, none of these are amongst my favourites, I only really love one or two from each country. Hungary are pretty consistent though, whereas Portugal and Armenia either get it very right or horribly wrong.
So all of portugal's entries in this list are spanish

I'd like about three qualifiers from each of Armenia and Croatia, just the one from each of Hungary and Portugal and give me five from Serbia (but my god, 2009 might be their only misstep but it's probably the worst song of everything here)

Thank you so much to everyone who submitted votes yesterday! We've now got a very healthy 11 sets of votes which is fantastic. If anyone else wants to vote you've got 12 hours left
OMG I have NO recollection of the Croatian entry 'Celebrate' from 2011, no whatsoever!

Hungary, Portugal, and Serbia have some absolute gems.

One song up there is apparently the second most played song on my ipod ever !

So after 14 sets of votes I can now say that voting is closed!

Thanks again to everyone who has taken part, it's been fascinating seeing the results change as different sets of votes have come in over the week. Just to whet your appetite, the highest score received was 132 (an average of 9.43 per voter) and the lowest was 44 (an average of just 3.14). To find out the rest of the results I hope you'll check back in later as I count down the results starting from 6pm UK time (about 4 hours from now if you're not in the UK)

I think the lowest score will be "Cipela" ("Romanca" is dreadful too but Croatia had one less song to give points to and I think the Serbian entries are rather Buzzjack friendly aside from this one major dud..) and the highest, my guess is either "Qélé, Qélé" or "LoveWave".

OMG I have NO recollection of the Croatian entry 'Celebrate' from 2011, no whatsoever!

How does one forget those dress changes though?! :o

Right here we go, and up first is:

ARMENIA

9th // 51 points // 2013 ► Dorians - Lonely Planet

8th // 57 points // 2011 ► Emmy - Boom Boom

7th // 64 points // 2015 ► Genealogy - Face The Shadow

6th // 65 points // 2014 ► Aram MP3 - Not Alone

Nothing too surprising here as Armenia lose all their male representation as well as their only non-qualifier in the real thing, Boom Boom. Just 6 points behind Boom Boom we find Lonely Planet which very nearly scored the lowest amount possible but picked up a bit of steam at the end to avoid that embarrassment. Face The Shadow is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, but it clearly is an entry that was created for the symbolism rather than because all the individual voices work well together, so it is rather messy. And finally we lose Aram MP3 at this early stage. I thought people quite liked this one but I suppose that it got lost in the field. That’s fine by me as I don’t think it’s aged particularly well, despite only being 3 years old.

Top 5:

2008 ► Sirusho - Qélé, Qéle

2009 ► Inga & Anush - Jan Jan

2010 ► Eva Rivas - Apricot Stone

2016 ► Iveta Mukuchyan - LoveWave

2017 ► Artsvik - Fly With Me

This leaves 5 very strong and popular entries left in the running but there’s only room for 2 of them to qualify from this heat directly so who has to lose out? Did Buzzjack prefer Armenia’s more recent offerings or were the classic trio of 08-10 more to our collective taste?

I think Lovewave will qualify, but who the second one is really open I think. Maybe Jan Jan over Qele Qele

Final results for ARMENIA:

5th // 85 points // 2017 ► Artsvik - Fly With Me

And it’s Armenia’s most recent entry that falls at the final hurdle. This is one of my favourite tracks from Armenia and I really appreciate its subtleness and the build up to the final moments. That being the case, it did take a while for me to appreciate it fully so I definitely think it’s possible for Fly With Me to grow on us all even more and place higher in future contests.

Second Chance

SC // ?? points // 2009 ► Inga & Anush - Jan Jan

SC // ?? points // 2010 ► Eva Rivas - Apricot Stone

And it’s consecutive entries Jan Jan and Apricot Stone that have to slum it through Second Chance. Both put up a good fight but ultimately fell short. Will either be able to make it through as a wildcard?

Direct Qualifiers

DQ // ?? points // 2008 ► Sirusho - Qéle, Qélé

DQ // ?? points // 2016 ► Iveta Mukuchyan - LoveWave

Which leaves up with a top 2 of Qéle, Qéle and LoveWave, which did very well and picked up high scores almost across the board. I would probably have preferred Jan Jan to be here but I have to agree that these are both fantastic entries. LoveWave in particular is a demonstration of how to use staging to maximise the impact of a track and that instrumental section is just *.*

Fly With Me deserved better, but two well deserved qualifiers
