I think it's also down to the fast they appealed to such a young audience and a lot can change within even a year about their tastes - I know how quickly I went off "pop" and into "cool" groups like, errr, No Doubt back then.

Sadly I don't think any of their studio albums will reach those targets any time soon. To the point we might not see it happen until the 2040s, lol, unless a reunion gives their music a very impactful

It's true! No Scrubs took just 90 weeks to improve from 4xPlatinum to 5xPlatinum. It seems like it might "sell" double what Wannabe does each week. I suppose it's all down to heavy playlisting to go

I also didn’t realise 'Bag It Up' helped Schizophonic so much! I think the BRITS must have played a part, but I guess by that point having 4 big recognisable hits on it must have been the most beneficial thing.
I think it's a few reasons,

1) They were oversaturated so a lot of people went off them.

2) The media turning against them.

3) Spice buyers not liking the album enough to want to buy the follow up.

4) They had lost the 'cool' image they had for Spice so the more mature audience perhaps thought they were for children.

That and the fact that Spice was an anomaly, it's not common to have those kind of sales for albums so it wasn't going to happen again and again. I do think had they released an album in 1998 it would have had similar sales to Spiceworld.

Agree with this. I think saturation and the media turning against them really affected the public's perception of them, which is just sad cos Spiceworld was a massive hit but could have been even bigger! I don't think Geri leaving was the problem as they were already in a steady decline (for their standards at the time) and that was one of the reasons Geri left anyway, by her own admission. In fact, Geri leaving provided a boost at the time as it brought new attention to the group. Viva Forever was seen as 'the last one with Geri' so it was extra special for the fans to buy.

Yep, they should have continued to promo the album with Never Give Up On The Good Times later that summer, tapping into making it fun to be a Spice fan again after Geri leaving, and re-release the album with a couple of 4-piece extra songs. That would have brought the album up the charts and help cement them even more against the backlash. Ah well...

It shows how massive Spice was at 3m for the media to call Spiceworld a flop sometimes (1.6m) and of course it’s the second best-selling girl group album after Spice.

The idea of adding extra songs, deluxe editions wasn’t really a thing in the 90s. If it had been they would have re released Spiceworld again for the same amount of money and only added ‘Goodbye’ 😄

UK official chart website is fresh and new. Every chart has an archive for each artist. Cool!

Wow, that's a lot of information!

It even has vinyl charts from the 90s... :o We can see from the chart runs that they weren't big sellers on vinyl back then. Maybe it's the case that pop music on vinyl wasn't sought after then, so it was more of a niche purchase... or maybe they didn't press enough copies.

Spice shows a 90s vinyl chart run of: 14-21-out-37-40-24-19-13-12-32-29-out-38-out

Spiceworld only managed this: 8-25-out-32-out

Probably explains why those original pressings appeared so rarely on eBay and if they did it was with high prices.

It shows Spice Up Your Life with a vinyl album chart run. Maybe with so many remixes on it, it was considered applicable for the album chart rather than singles? Unless it's a mistake. It managed a decent chart run: 1-4-9-13-19-16-32-26-22-13-18-29-out ... if it was the album chart it clearly sold a lot more copies than Spiceworld.

No sign of Holler with a vinyl chart run even though it got a commercial release.

Finally a few missing charts are completed now.

So bad scottish singles charts was removed.

Also Next Best Superstar charted inside hip hop chart. It's a mistake for sure.
