August 22, 20177 yr Author Seen three of these and this would be my ranking: 1 Marion Cotillard 2 Julie Christie 3 Ellen Page Cotillard - This is one of my favourite performances of all-time, it's amazing how she managed to portray one woman throughout different stages of her life. There was heaps of emotion in her singing scenes and I just found it one of the most captivating portrayals of a character I've ever seen  Christie - She was probably runner-up in the real Oscars too and it's not hard to see why. It reminds me of Julianne Moore in Still Alice or Judi Dench in Iris where some of the scenes just tear your heart out. I'm not that familiar with Christie's older films but it's a shame she hasn't done much of note since this either. Ellen Page - Perfect for this role but the role is a bit light in comparison to the other two so I have had to rank her a bit lower. She seemed so promising at the time though so it's also a shame we haven't seen her do many good films since (Inception aside really...) :( In terms of snubs, I really think Keira Knightley could have made it in if she was pushed supporting. She hardly has a big role so it wouldn't be category fraud and she was just as good in this as she was in her actual two Oscar nominations (if not better!). A bit of a shame Ronan was the only acting nomination from this film when McAvoy, Knightley and Redgrave all nailed it too ! :( Helena Bonham Carter would have been in my top five too but she probably never stood much of a chance in reality despite the Golden Globe nomination. She's so underrated though, 2 Oscar nominations does not do her justice at all. It's a bit gutting that Depp stole the attention here because they made a great duo in the film but she didn't get half the love from the awards
August 23, 20177 yr The performance that Cotillard gave is probably one of the best of all time, so it's a good thing she won! Her performance is really quite something. The confidence she oozes, the big emotional scenes and the subtle ones are all splendid as well!
