  • Happy 25th anniversary! Also, ugh, 25 years since they last released an album. I still remember being so excited to get the CD, wanting my parents to take me to the shops after school finished on Mo

  • What I Am came out 26 years ago!! A total BOP! I will give it a stream and a purchase today https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEOeClFSQ1o

  • I think Melanie just missed out on a Brit Award because she was nominated too early. There was a rule that you could only be voted in one year for an album and the Northern Star album nominations cam

She wouldn't allow it to be used in a film in the first place.

This. Victoria owns the masters of her Telstar and 19 Records era, and thus she has the power to stop any inclusion of the songs on any medium. It is known that it is her who is stopping them for going on streaming/sale.

Hell, it has even been stated by an ex-EMI employee that she tried to buy the masters from her Virgin records too in 2018/2019 to remove them from streaming as well. I think she would like the whole solo-Popstar career to be removed from existance, sadly...

So even if some folk would like to have it on streaming or attached to an add or movie, Victoria would probably block it.

For all we know, she might be the reason we haven't had any more unreleased tracks from the Spice Girls. Mel C certainly seemed to hint at it during the demos discussions around Spiceworld25...

She would need to have a pretty big change of heart for that to happen. Maybe if one of her tracks goes viral on TikTok or whatever, it might bring some positive light to her music and she might reconsider, but she is in a very different position from any of the other girls. They are all still interested in music somehow, and would probably jump at one of their songs going viral/being included in movies. Not Victoria though...

It's sad but that's where we are at with her...

I just hope she would let go of that fear specially in relation to the Spice Girls recordings.

For all we know, she might be the reason we haven't had any more unreleased tracks from the Spice Girls.

Her Likely Stories vocal wasn't very flattering, so I'd understand if she was the one who blocked its official release.

I wish she'd get over it a bit to at least let Let Your Head Go and This Groove be on streaming, it wouldn't do any harm surely <_<

I agree but you also know that as soon as it went on streaming, the gays online would go wild and the press would have a field day with it. And she doesnt want attention to her solo music at all :(

They should be available on streaming the press would move on quickly from it.

Yesterday (Nov 1st) saw the 25th anniversary of the release of two solo spice singles and a chart battle between Geri's 'Lift Me Up' and Emma's 'What I Am'

Lift-me-up.jpg

Lift Me Up

Peak: 1

First week sales: 140,000

Total UK sales: 346,000

Whatiamcover.jpg

What I Am

Peak: 2

First week sales: 106,300

Total UK sales: 234,000

I remember everyone talking about Emma's song more as it was her first solo song and music video and I already had Geri's album so I remember being excited to have a single by Emma.

What are your memories?

I remember that I side-eyed Geri hard for not stepping aside and let Emma have her moment. I really judged her character then that she would compete against her so-called ex-bandmate/ sister. And to Emma, whos the nicest lol.

Thank goodness, Emma got her number one later. Then, I forgave Geri lol.

25 years ago! :drama: :drama: It's certainly a memorable chart battle.

Sales of the #1 singles before and after her:

06-Nov Keep On Movin Five 137,000

13-Nov Lift Me Up Geri Halliwell 139,000

20-Nov She's The One Robbie Williams 122,600

In an alternate timeline, Geri vs Robbie would have been an iconic chart battle too, and it seems Geri would have had a very good chance of beating him.

Two cute songs but I gotta be honest - they are quite of their time. Just listened to This Groove and honestly I'm not bothered to listen to it again  Vicky's solo album was better!

I think This Groove is Victoria's best song personally, perfect for her tone vocally too.

This was before they were doing their thing wasn't it? Wonder if they would have seen the funny side were it when they were both "friends" or whether their egos would get in the way?

I think I Wish, Not That Kind of Girl and Like That showcase where she is best at, personally. Also, her best songs imo

This Groove is cute but it's a bit meh now to me, so I don't miss it

Yes, the were a thing in summer of 2000.

Gosh, this looks even worse that she went against her old bandmate instead of battling out with the pop boys instead. Or the Boyzone's chart battle made her lose confidence lol.

By the time Forever came out (which would have been when nominations and voting would have been starting), the industry already was very against them both as solos and as a group...

Plus, I don't think Virgin Records and the Brits ever forgave them for not giving a crap about the group right after winning that Oustanding Achivement Award... It was also after this that Virgin stopped caring much about Mel C 'successful Spice' as well...

I think Melanie just missed out on a Brit Award because she was nominated too early. There was a rule that you could only be voted in one year for an album and the Northern Star album nominations came in 2000 (alongside Geri and Spice Girls). Melanie's break through success didn't really occur until the Year 2000 where she would have qualified for a 2001 nomination however had already had it for Northern Star. I think she would have had a strong chance of winning in 2001 against Sonique had she not already been nominated in the Year 2000. I also think NBTSA or ITTY could have got a nomination for single too.

All in all though they did manage to garner a few nominations

Geri x4 - British Female x2, British Pop Act x1 and British Single (IRM)

Melanie C x1 - British Female

Melanie B x1 - British Music Video (IWYB)

By the time Emma and Victoria were releasing they simply were not doing as well as their competition singles and albums wise. It's a real shame Emma got no nominations at all, she certainly deserved some for the Free Me era.

Happy 29th to one of the most iconic albums of all time, one of the best ever by a girlband and the most successful ever by a girlband.

Let's not forget some other achivements of the album: it changed popular culture and also got the band to win Brit Awards and Ivor Novello Awards AND was nominated for a Mercury Prize, the three most prestigious music awards in British culture (The Brits is more 'industry' whereas the Ivor and Mercury are more for the music and writing!).

Astonishing really, and I hope that for the 30th anniversary they focus more on the CULTURAL IMPACT and the QUALITY of that album!
