Spotify have been preparing for an IPO (initial public offering) on the Dow Jones stock exchange for some time now, they've just got a few regulatory hurdles to jump through before they can achieve that, as well as a few contractual things (such as re-negotiating their rates with the Big 3 record companies) before they can float it. They're really banking on the IPO though - as you say Spotify have failed to turn a profit in any year since it first started, and they're in a net liability position, relying on the occasional cash injection from angel investors to keep going. Spotify's a great service, but so far not one that they can make money out of.

 

There is no way Spotify will sell. It needs to get on to the stock exchange (and will eventually) but the the business is constantly expanding in to new markets and their paid subscribers are only going up. Right now they are still in growth mode and a lot of the costs they incur are all operational. One of the tech giants would love to take them over I am sure, but they would be crazy to do so just yet.
