have they also got the percent of records that becomes a hit from all records released into music weeks' listings per year and number of chart hits?

if you use a mix of polyhex and zobbel.de you'll get those figures, though zobbels site lists new releases totals up to 2004 only. Music Week has a habit of counting a single more than once if it is released on more than one format. Zobbel just counts the actual amount of singles, not formats. In 2004 there were 6,127 singles released on 7,845 formats of which a mere 6 releases were on cassette single. Ten years earlier, in 1994, there were 5,047 releases on 10,129 formats of which 1,595 were on cassette.

The release figures (top 75 entries) are:

1996: 5809 (1126)

1997: 5928 (1135)

1998: 5407 (1049)

1999: 5047 (911)

2000: 4892 (847)

2001: 5078 (856)

2002: 5383 (916)

2003: 5631 (959)

2004: 6127 (984)

from the above, you can see that less releases are charting. In 1996 20% of all releases charted, in 2000 this fell to 18% and by 2004 it was 16%.

Earlier figures show that in 1979 it was 15%, 1984 18% and 1989 it was 29%, the highest ever!
