It's nice that the GH has increased so much over the year and hopefully it will keep doing so!

I was looking at Discogs recently and it seems to have picked up quite a few Re-prints and re-releases over the years across the world, so it seems like it is a constant seller.

Would be nice to know if it has broken the 2million mark worldwide yet? ^_^

Supposedly these are the certs:

UK - 2x Platinum (700,000)

USA - Gold (600,000 with Victoria's Secret plus whatever else has been sold)

Australia - Platinum (70,000)

Brazil - Gold (30,000)

Canada - Gold (50,000)

Denmark - Gold (10,000)

New Zealand - Gold (10,000)

So that is basically 1.5 million certified sales then whatever else it has sold across the world. Considering it didn't chart great in many other territories (Ireland is it's only other top 10 placing) I wouldn't be too confident it has tbh.

The album sold 1.7 million by 2007, according to IFPI

Including physical sales and streaming the GH is around 1.4 million in the U.S.

Ah nice, so that sounds good! If it doubled its sales since its release both in the UK and US, it seems like a good guess that it could stand at 3million worldwide at the very least then :teresa:

Sounds like way too much for the US tbh. No way it's sold 800k since leaving the charts.

1.4 million!? Wouldn't it have a Platinum certification there if so though?

You have to pay for certs in the US and the label aren't going to waste money paying for them. Spice is over 8m in the US including streaming sales and still 7 times plat as well.

I bet if they tour there again they certainly will update their certifications as it helps with promo/visibility and they can use those stats in their promotions too. Without a tour though, they wont waste their time...

I was reading about the certification of the GH album on another forum. At the end of 2020 the GH album had sold around 791k in digital downloads, physical CDs and streams in the U.S. and when I asked the person they said the total did NOT include the 600k from Victoria’s Secrets.

Technically if you disregarded the VS shipments the album is over 800k in its own right, so it’s not far from a platinum certification.

Also the GH was as high as #36 on UK iTunes today

Yeah VS was not registered with sound scan in the US so the 600k sales never went on their official US sales for the chart. However the RIAA take sales from anywhere as like with the UK you can get certs on shipments as well as sales. So the GH could easily be certified platinum in the US with sales and VS shipment. As Spice girls net has said above it is probably inching towards platinum without the VS sales too now.

I'm just dubious about those numbers, but I'm not sure how they compile streaming of albums in the US. 800k is a lot considering it only charted at 93 and has never re-entered the top 200 there.

Wasnt it this year that it was revealed that the bulk of streams from their music comes from the US? It makes sense for it to have ticked on over so many years... It's been 8 years and their catalogue (Wannabe mostly) gets played a lot, so I wouldnt be surprised..

I'm just not sure, but to sell 500k in eight years it would've had to "sold" on an average 1.2k per week. More depending on how much (or little) it did pre-streaming. It just sounds a bit much if I'm being honest for an album that never re-charted.

But as I said, I have no idea how they compile streaming there to begin with. I know I was surprised that Zara Larsson's So Good has "sold" Platinum there so it's not impossible.

^ According to RIAA's & Billboard's ridiculous rules, individual track sales can contribute to albums & compilations "sales". As a result, albums can get certified on their release day without having sold one copy. And if that's not enough, unlike the OCC, they do NOT weigh down the two most popular tracks from an album when counting streaming "sales".

Oh. I guess 800k doesn't sound that unreasonable then. What a mess.

wow I didnt know that! It's a mess lol

So yeah 800k does sound likely :w00t:

Yep the US just let anything contribute towards an album 'sale' so individual downloads of Wannabe will add to album sales (not sure the exact formula whether it is 10 individual downloads or the amount that make up the number of tracks on an album so would be 15 for the GH).

It is a tough line though as the US album market looks much more healthy because of it. Where as the UK an album selling 1 million copies in total is almost impossible now.

Thank you! It should be well above 1Billion!!

Yes it should. 500 million at least.

Spice will be reaching 1 billion in March
