Recap for anyone that misses it as stories only last 24 hours

Globally, ‘Wannabe’ was the most streamed song of the 90s on Spotify by a female artist in 2020 (beating TLC, Destiny’s Child, Britney Spears, Celine Dion and J.Lo to name a few)

‘Wannabe’ was the first British girl group single to reach 500 million streams on Spotify. (If it continues to get approx 2 million streams per week it should hit 600m streams by July to coincide with its 25th anniversary)

‘Stop’ was certified Platinum in the UK in 2020, making the Spice Girls the only girl group to have their first 9 releases reach platinum.

In 2020, the Spice Girls became the first ever girl group to have all of their singles from their first two albums reach platinum in the UK.

‘Spice’ crossed 3 million units in the UK in 2020 and is still the best selling girl group album of all time.

Spice Girls reached over 1 billion Spotify streams in total in 2020

I’m sure Ed Sheeran is the only other artist so I guess they would also be the only group to achieve this too 👏

Posting some end of year achievements for the year 2000 (mostly solo) with a few from the group on my Spice Girls Net Insta stories if anyone's interested :)

New Melanie C interview with the iconic Zane Lowe on Apple Music had some very interesting stuff to say about the Spice Girls. How wonderful and it is soooooo nice to see Zane's appreciation for the girls, their music AND their iconic career :cheer:

Here is a round-up for anyone who cant watch this or doesnt have the time:

- His take on Wannabe is bang on, specially how he describes the intro as a HAMMER into the world (in a delightfully positive way), no intro no 4'bars, no f***ing about just straight into the statement. It's a good and fun way to describe the song and just illustrates the attitude that Wannabe put forward.

- Melanie agrees and says that everything changed with Wannabe for them. They knew it had to be the first single or it would never be released as it couldnt follow anything else. They felt aware that Wannabe could be seen as a one-hit wonder but they were very convinced that they had a great album to back it up.

- 2 Become 1, Zane describes it as being a universal song that even lads and even the most cynical music fan had to agree that it was a definite tune. It is, for him, as the song that signified their future which is very nice to hear.

- Melanie C describes the process of recording 2B1. They went into the studio and Matt Rowe was playing the piano and had the hook of the 'candle light and soul forever' and they knew that it was time for them to write a ballad and get romantic. They felt they had an opportunity here to sing about equality and girl power, which the safe sex, love and romantic message of the song translates well.

- They also played a bit with the inuendos of the song lol

- They described being in a worldwind of success as a washing machine :teresa: and the differences of celebrity back in the 90s and today with social media. Mel feels like today people are more aware of criticism due to social media, but back then she wasnt ready for the type of scrutiny she was about to receive...

- Life is complicated and she doesnt regret any of the past issues. She goes as far as to say that she wouldnt change a thing.

- She was diagnosed with depression in 2000 and also an eating disorder. She wasnt ready to talk about it back then but did it anyway cos she felt a duty to talk as a celebrity. She then regretted cos she hadnt done the work on herself first and then felt shame around it. But as time when on, she realises that she has managed to infuence people positively on these issues, and has managed to come out the other way.

- On Spiceworld, The Movie, Zane says that it was unheard that a pop band would release a movie and succeed but how incredible that Spice World The Movie was such a success for them.

- MC says that they didnt think at that point (1997/8) that the group and success would ever stop. It was pretty crazy, and she was very much 'Spice Girls for life' although she does say that other members might have had other plans (lol hiiiii Gerita B-) )

- They wrote a lot of Spiceworld in the movie set and the album was inspired by the experiences they had across the world.

- They were shocked, hurt and upset that Geri left and it was definitely the beginning of the end, but they did understand because it was really hard as they were under such pressure at the time.

- Stop's choreography is ICONIC and it is a 3-dimensional experience with the audience. The encore last year was really a high point and it is such a great song.

- In rehearsals, she would often go 'oh god we havent even done Stop, or Mama or Wannabe', as in 'ghosh we have so many HITS' lol Zane even compares them to Prince with 'I have so many hits'

- Goodbye  was such a MOMENT in their career because it signalled a shift and a clear indication that things were slowing down/changing. It is a difficult song to sing, even today. Singing it with Geri on tour was really special.

- 'Spice Girls will live on forever'

- They are very close with Victoria and she found it difficult that she wasnt there with the girls. She says that Victoria found it hard too when the pictures from the show were beamed up across the world on opening night (they really were!! ).

- She says that they HOPE that it was hard enough on Victoria to get her to come back one day :o :cheer:

- On Victoria joining again: She feels Victoria is coming around to the idea of performing again.

- On new music with the girls: THEY TALK ABOUT IT but they wont force it, it has to come naturally and if it is a thing they feel they should do, Melanie is sure they would do it.

They really just need to bite the bullet with new music, if Steps are scoring #2 albums then the girls could easily score a number 1. I feel it is the same thing as performing without Victoria, they had talks offers (in 2014 they had a contract drawn up to tour as a 4 piece as well as 2016) and eventually they just did it and look howhat successful it was in 2019.

10 new songs, 478963 formats and a promo blitz and another excuse to tour.

When she says other members had other plans was she talking about Mel B too I wonder? Mel said in one of the last documentaries that Mel B "left" a few times aswell. I'd be fascinated to know more about that hint hint memoir.

The new music thing has to happen soon or it will never happen, I'd love them to just go for it and not care about the charts and sales although I'm almost certain they'd get a number 1 album week 1.

Agree with all. Although the 4 piece tour in 2016 was apparently going to be quite small arenas as they didnt think they could pull off another big tour like in 2007, I remember reading that somewhere. Then Mel C pulled out and the rest is history lol I think after the picture at Geri's house things really changed for them, interestingly. So much so that they went on to do a massive stadium tour lol

But yeah, they should bite the bullet and do it. This year is going to still be hard to tour even later in the year. Take this time to music and reconnect as a band on that level :w00t:

Yeah of course about Mel B too as she was technically the first one to go solo ah but there's clearly behind the scenes stuff we dont know lol

They just need to make new music happen. They would do well, that's for certain. Just dont expect another 3million seller, but who cares?! It would go #1 and sell well and give them another opportunity to tour!

Part of me hopes they have agreed to an unreleased/rarities album for Wannabe's or Spice anniversary, a way to test the water. Universal could absolutely milk fans with multiple formats and on any normal week 20k would be more than enough to go to number 1. I can just imagine them holding those #1 trophies they give to acts these days and thinking ok let's get in the studio and record some music.

What a great interview! It's always a pleasure to see Melanie C being so positive and proud about the Spice Girls. Quite reassuring re: Victoria coming around to the idea of doing things with the girls again, and also the possibility of new music. Not that Melanie's comments were close to being a "yes", but it was nevertheless a positive answer, that she's at least open to the idea of it.

Like schizo_spice says, new music really ought to happen sooner rather than later... and like Mr.X says, touring isn't on the horizon for a long time seemingly, so it feels like this is the perfect "down time" moment for them to think about more music. Though I suppose with this year being such a key anniversary year, their focus might once again be purely on the nostalgia... hmm. I certainly wouldn't be against unreleased/rarities like Sammy suggests, though that does seem to be the one Spice related thing that Melanie does still have a hang-up with. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I hope this year will be incredible for Spice Girls and the fans!

We as fans need to demand new music all across social media and even emailing their management. It's the only way they will wake up to the reality that people want the unreleased stuff and the new music.

They know fans want new music. Bombarding them will just annoy.

Can you see them all writing and recording a full album? This will take months. I would love it but just cant see it happening.

Maybe an EP or soundtrack to test response would work. They must be concerned that an album could potentially flop and tarnish their legacy / brand.

Viva Forever is almost forgotten about by the general public for such a gorgeous song and so well regarded by spice fans.

I really hope the new reunion/celebrations highlight the rest of the catalogue so that masterpieces like Viva Forever and Too Much get a proper shine in the light instead of constantly rolling out Wannabe and Spice Up Your LIfe...

They could totally get Apple/Spotify to include those songs in playlists and throw backs. Get clever with it, dont just rely on Wannabe...

Viva Forever needs one proper great performance the public see. They need to find a way to get to do it in a 1 off way that gives it focus.

Strictly final 2021 or the 2nd to last song on a Glastonbury set in the dark lighters up crowd singing along the girls in tears at the end with Wannabe to follow.

Yes it needs its time to shine.

Funnily enough I wanted loads of Olympics flames lit up all over the stadium while the group sang Viva Forever during the 2012 Closing Ceremony in London.

Wannabe/SUYL was an obvious and fun choice though.

There were rumours they were going to do Viva Forever too, and also Stop, but that never happened in the end and it was probably just rumours.

AGREE that Viva Forever deserves a new performance. I could totally see it being performed at the Brits or as people say here, at the Strictly final this year. Little Mix did a performance of Break Up Song there and it was wonderful. Their 2 Become 1 performance back in the day did nothing for the album over Christmas but it was such a boring performance...

I hope they do something really special with Viva Forever at some point. It's such a gorgeous, classic song. Their best ever!
