#66: Declan McKenna - Why Do You Feel So Down?

Peak: 03 / Month of Peak: November 2017

Declan McKenna's Chart History:

2017 01 The Kids Don't Wanna Come Home

2017 03 Brazil

2017 08 Humongous

2017 03 Why Do You Feel So Down?

2017 87 Mind

Time for the first Declan! I discovered this one whilst listening to the album for the first time and it immediately stuck out. I had it on my playlist for ages before it became a single, and was so glad when it did! It did drop fairly quickly through since I'd listened to it for about a month already, and it must be a nominee for the weirdest video of the year, but I still really like it! You might be waiting a while for the other 2 Declans as well ;)

A little way back now but yay at Emeli Sande making it with Highs & Lows! I didn't like it as much as some of the singles from her first album but it was definitely the best thing she did this era for me. I'm still so shocked at how poorly she did commercially :o Starlight was pretty nice too but also did absolutely nothing charts wise

Yay at Declan appearing too and yay for Brazil still yet to come (it definitely remains my fave of his despite being his lowest peaker for me, oops). A shame he didn't get a bit more commercial success but I hope R1 continue to support him in the future. He's one of the most promising new artists from recent years in my opinion

Lovely stuff Pete!!

Glad you like these songs! You'll have to wait a bit for any more Declan ;) His album did fairly well so he should still get support! Thanks Josh :D

#65: Kodaline - Brother

Peak: 01 / Month of Peak: August 2017

AronChupa's Chart History:

2017 01 Brother

2017 09 Ready to Change

Another artist I had absolutely no care for before I heard this song, and even a while after hearing it. But I began to realise that this was the type of emotional song I really liked, similar to MORLAND's Skin, one of the songs of last year. I really got into this, and it spent 2 weeks at #1 in my chart. Their follow-up was nowhere near as good, but it doesn't take anything away from this masterpiece.

#1 Ranking

#29: Kodaline - Brother

#30: AronChupa ft. Lil Sis Nora - Llama In My Living Room

#31: Sophie Francis - Without You

#32: Alan Walker - Alone

#33: Captain Cuts ft. Nateur - Love Like We Used To

#34: Elina Born - In Or Out

#35: MOWE ft. Jerry Williams - Boy Oh Boy

#36. Schwarz - Home

#37. Clean Bandit ft. Julia Michaels - I Miss You

#38. Oceans - Deep Blue

#39. LVNDSCAPE ft. Mi Manchi - In My Mind

#40. The Strumbellas - Young & Wild

#64: Borgeous ft. Karmin - Young in Love

Karmin's Chart History:

2017 02 Young In Love (Borgeous ft. Karmin)

I have to admit, when I was going through my charts to compile my EOY I had no idea what this song sounded like. But when I listened to this again it made me feel so nostalgic, even if just for the start of 2017. It gave me that cozy feeling I felt when I had only just got Spotify and when I could listen to any songs I wanted in the car, and it also reminded me of the sort of dance music I was really into at the start of the year that I wouldn't even bat an eyelid at now. Therefore, it's here :magic:

Another track I discovered from My Discovery to enter to an off-site contest, this remake of a Tracy Chapman classic has both a great tropical house beat plus a world music feel which are both things I crave for in a song, therefore this was ideal for me. It probably should have peaked higher than #6 for me, clearly since it's this high and I still love it now!

#62: Chromeo - Juice

Peak: 03 / Month of Peak: December 2017

Chromeo's Chart History:

2017 03 Juice

A song still in my Top 5! I had been a massive fan of Jealous when it came out, one of the few modern songs I actually downloaded the year it came out after hearing it on Radio 2 in a brief spell in my mother's car :P Anyway, it appearing in BJSC made me remember this amazing duo, and hence I discovered Juice. This grew on me very quickly and is most certainly a slow burner, spending 7 weeks in my Top 5 already and could still break my 'most weeks in the Top 10' record! (if it hasn't already - I don't keep track :P )

Quite like that Borgeous song! Just gave it a listen and it's really nice and chilled, probably would have enjoyed it during the summer

Love Revolution too, sounds like something that would have been a big spotify hit a few years ago!

Ahhhh I love Karmin but Young In Love must have passed me by! :o Sounds amazing, I'll definitely be replaying it a lot  (I'll bat an eyelid at it in your place ;))

Why Do You Feel So Down is a fantastic track  the video is.... interesting however

Agreed  Thanks Joseph!

#61: Ryder - Nirvana

Peak: 07 / Month of Peak: April 2017

Ryder's Chart History:

2017 07 Nirvana

Another low-ish peaker here, but another song I really like! I discovered it in BJSC (from Cameron I think) and it almost passed me by on first listen - I think it only just got points in my semi :o But by the final I loved it, and it continued to grow from there, reaching the Top 10 in my Personal Chart! It should probably have gone higher as well, and another song that reminds me of my week in the Lakes (I wish I was there now :P )

#60: Vance Joy - Like Gold

Peak: 01 / Month of Peak: December 2017

Vance Joy's Chart History:

2017 01 Like Gold

Just scraping into my Top 60 is another former #1 of mine! I have to admit, I hadn't really heard much from Vance Joy since Riptide, but decided to give this a spin since it was on the Release Schedule. It very quickly grew on me, one of those songs that really gets into you and makes you sad even though you don't pay attention to the lyrics. Unfortunately after it reached my #1, like many of the enter-quickly-and-reach-#1 tracks, it fell like a stone in the Christmas period, but it's still a great song!

#59: Madeline Juno - No Words

Peak: 04 / Month of Peak: April 2017

Madeline Juno's Chart History:

2016 01 You Know What

2017 04 No Words

2017 13 Still

2017 18 Gift

So after the amazing You Know What from last year, I was certainly interested to see what Madeline came out with next, and needless to say I wasn't disappointed  Whilst this is a completely different genre to You Know What, it's really good in it's own right and it's a real earworm that reminds me of going walking in early 2017, even if she sounds really Scottish in the bridge of this song :P Her newer songs have been a little bit generic though so I'm hoping for something of this standard!

#58: Janieck - Just Wanna Be With You

Peak: 05 / Month of Peak: March 2017

Janieck's Chart History:

2017 05 Just Wanna Be With You

2017 01 Little Hollywood (Alle Farben ft. Janieck)

2018 50 Does It Matter

I had wide eyes out for Janieck's new music after Lost Frequencies' Reality was hands down the best song in 2015 (sorry Jess) and would have been a multi-week #1 had I had a chart then. His first new music (Feel the Love) didn't do that much for me, but this was a complete game-changer. Another song that reminds me of being in the Lakes, it has that acoustic/dance merge which actually works really well! And then of course he featured on the amazing Little Hollywood, which is still to come...

#57: The Afters - Eyes of a Believer

Peak: 01 / Month of Peak: September 2017

The Afters' Chart History:

2016 03 Battles

2017 01 Eyes of a Believer

Another worship song here (there's still a couple more to come) and the first Christian song to reach #1 in my chart! I'd loved Battles from the year before, and I think what made this one for me was that it had just the right mix between a general worship song and a mainstream indie/pop piece. If worship music was a chart force (barring Stormzy) this is the type of stuff I think would do well.

David Gray's Chart History:

2016 01 You Can't Always Get What You Want (Friends of Jo Cox ft. MP4, Steve Harley, Ricky Wilson, KT Tunstall & David Gray)

In mid-2016, I'm sure you'll remember the horrific death of Labour MP Jo Cox. Whilst she wasn't our local MP, this happened close to home enough to affect us quite a bit, and after her death it began to emerge what a wonderful woman she was. Whilst this track released for Christmas didn't trouble the charts, but the Jo Cox foundation appears to be running nonetheless and I wish them all the best in what they're doing. May she rest in peace.

#55: Lost Frequencies ft. Zonderling - Crazy

Peak: 01 / Month of Peak: December 2017

Lost Frequencies' Chart History:

2016 04 Beautiful Life (Lost Frequencies ft. Sandro Cavazza)

2016 20 All Or Nothing (Lost Frequencies ft. Axel Ehnstrom)

2017 24 Here With You (Lost Frequencies & Netsky)

2017 01 Crazy (Lost Frequencies ft. Zonderling)

Looks like I put this a bit too high oops. After releasing quite frankly one of the best songs ever in Reality (oooh I get to talk about this gem twice within 5 songs), he went on to release a barrage of mediocre-ness, some of which didn't even make my chart. Here With You was a real slow burner for me, spending over 20 weeks in the chart despite being his lowest charting single to date. So, in true Post-Malone style, this should have quite frankly been a massive smash. And I must have thought that at the time, with the song debuting in the Top 10 and reaching #1 the week after. It was very instant though, having a chart run of 6-1-2-2-5-11-40 to date (there have been worse, trust me :P ). The fact I then discovereed Thomas Sekelius' One More In The Crowd which is basically the same lyrics shuffled around a bit but to a better beat certainly didn't help it.
