24 Louisa Johnson - Best Behaviour | 17-1-2-4-6-10-13-18-24-30-X (10 weeks)

UYvbITY.jpg

Honestly the above tweet sums up my views on this track pretty damn well. Louisa Johnson followed up her proper debut single with the "fucking tune" that is Best Behaviour in March this year, and it was released on my birthday! It gave Louisa her fourth #1, an impressive statistic for someone with such a limited discography so far. Best Behaviour was an instant hit to my ears, but I never thought the public would take to it unfortunately. It was a shame to see this proved right, even if it was expected. Best Behaviour has everything I want in a hit - a catchy hook, brilliant production and plenty of charisma. It even had good radio support and was added to Hot Hits UK. So why didn't it take off? I'll never really know. It's a shame that it basically brought Louisa's career to a halt there and then, she deserves way better and I hope things improve for her in 2018.

23 Charlie Puth - How Long | 12-1-3-5-5-7-10-15-… (8+ weeks)

Not quite making his highest EOY position to date, How Long is nonetheless Charlie Puth's highest entry this year. I remember first hearing this outside the Hard Rock Café in London, while I was waiting to see Manel Navarro perform an acoustic set there. I couldn't stop playing it on repeat, despite being well aware that I was using up my mobile data! Upon its first full week, it gave Charlie his second #1 in my chart after We Don't Talk Anymore. Initially I found it hard to separate How Long and Attention in quality, and whilst I definitely adore both, How Long is my favourite. They're both relatively similar in sound, without one being a carbon copy of the other, and I think it's great to hear Charlie progressing his debut era's sound.

22 The Vamps feat. Maggie Lindemann - Personal | 1-2-4-6-9-11-… (6+ weeks)

The final Vamps song to appear this year, Personal is their most recent release. It's the lead single from Night & Day (Day Edition), due out some time this year, and features Maggie Lindemann. Unsurprisingly, Personal debuted at #1 in my chart, extending The Vamps' record for most #1s to 13, and giving Maggie her first chart-topper. I loved Personal from the word go. Maggie's an exciting new artist anyway but she sounds particularly great alongside Brad, and the chorus is very catchy and infectious. The video's lots of fun too, and Brad and Maggie have tons of chemistry. I thought it could be another chance for them to nab a streaming hit, but their label seem to have learned absolutely nothing from All Night's global success. A shame, wasted potential for sure.

21 Benjamin - Bad Luck Love | 1-2-3-5-7-12-17-21-25-36-X (10 weeks)

He dominated 2016 with his debut album Fingerprints, but Finnish popstar Benjamin has had a much quieter 2017. Despite his high activity level on Instagram, Benjamin has only released one track in 2017. On the bright side, it was a cracking track. Bad Luck Love stormed to #1, despite only being available for half a week, scoring my birthday #1 of 2017. It was Benjamin's third #1 in my chart, following his introductory hits Young and Restless (EOY #3 in 2015) and Unbreakable. Bad Luck Love has a darker sound to the carefree pop of the Fingerprints album, but Benjamin still excels when it comes to the hooks and melodies in the track. I'm hoping he's working hard on album 2 because I need more of his pop anthems in my life!

2 FO&O

Swedish trio FO&O have seen a number of guises over the past few years. Felix, Oscar and Omar were initially a four-piece with extra member Olly, and the band was named The Fooo (their initials). Before long, they became The Fooo Conspiracy, presumably to avoid any confusion with another notably popular band :kink: Their single My Girl was their first hit in my chart, peaking at #7, but it was a bumpy ride throughout the rest of 2017. Summer Love didn't chart and Who Doesn't Love Love charted at #20.

Nevertheless, I was very intrigued when they were announced as participants in Melodifestivalen 2017. By the time the event arrived, they'd lost Olly and renamed to FO&O (pronounced "fo and o"). I heard their track for the first time when it was performed live in the third heat of MFest, and it was an instant hit to my ears. Gotta Thing About You is still to appear in my songs countdown so I'll discuss it more later, but it's a cracking pop song and I was pleased it eventually made it through to the final.

A couple of months later, FO&O released a new album - their first in three years - featuring many of the singles released since then, with or without Olly. New single So So Good had hinted at a mature pop sound similar to that of Carly Rae Jepsen's E•MO•TION, and sure enough, most of the album followed in that vein. Highlights beyond the singles include Loop and Teenage Talking. The final few songs on the album are noticeably less mature in sound. Their debut single Build a Girl closes the album, while pop anthem Buzzkill is the penultimate track on the album and is actually my overall favourite after Gotta Thing About You.

Looking forward, it's hard to see what's next for FO&O. The boys seem to be on a break from performing together, which normally spells disaster for a pop group but the boys still see and tweet each other so I could see them reuniting before long - let's hope anyway! Felix is taking part in Melodifestivalen as a soloist this year, so I have high hopes that his track will be as strong as Gotta Thing About You.

20 Manel Navarro - Do It for Your Lover | 40-5-2-6-11-9-17-23-31-38-X-31-9-19-29-X-15-8-16-25-36-X (19 non-consecutive weeks)

The highest actual Eurovision track of the year! Spanish entrant Manel Navarro rose to my attention in early January last year, when I stumbled upon his track Candle. Within a week after, Do It for Your Lover's release had been announced, as well as Manel's intention of competing in the Spanish national selection for Eurovision. The song was instant for me, with its laidback vibes and catchy chorus. I didn't have any hopes for it going to Eurovision, but nevertheless the song was a mainstay in my playlist in the month leading up to the selection. Manel smashed his performance, but controversy ensued when the public's favourite Mirela lost to Manel through a tiebreak from the judges. This led to one of the most uncomfortable scenes I've watched on TV - with the crowd rioting after Manel won. Sore losers, huh? Nevertheless, Manel went to Eurovision.... where he finished last. Hey, I can't say it was undeserved - that bum note was a bit of a buzzkill and the song didn't translate all that well to the big stage anyway. Nevertheless, it returned to my top 10 after Eurovision, and once again after I met Manel in October. Four stints in the top 10 is a record among songs, except Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You which re-enters every year. Do It for Your Lover has been one of the defining songs of the year, and it's a shame that it couldn't make it to #1, blocked by Daniel Skye's ON, which dropped out down at #44!

19 Justin Bieber & BloodPop® - Friends | 5-1-4-4-8-10-13-19-24-31-32-34-X (12 weeks)

One of the most successful artists in the history of my chart, Justin Bieber has appeared in every EOY chart of mine since I began them in 2012. 2013 aside, he's made the top 100 every year too, and has three EOY top 10 hits. Unfortunately, this is not the year that he scores his first EOY #1, but Friends puts in a good showing, very easily being his biggest hit of the year. Friends stormed to #1 in its first full week, holding off competition from CNCO and Little Mix's Reggaetón Lento. It gave him an eighth #1 single, the most for any male soloist in my chart. Aside from the mature lyrics and superb production from BloodPop®, Friends came at just the right time in my life and the lyrics really hit the right spot. A coincidence of course but it's rare that I can relate to any song quite like this when it came out. A brilliant effort from Justin and I'm gutted it didn't add to his now impressive #1 haul in the UK.

While Katy achieved her first #1 in my chart this year, it's actually #2 Swish Swish that's her highest track, quite comfortably too. Swish Swish was initially released as an instant grat track from Witness, and took flippin' AGES to be pushed as a proper official single, so it ended up having an exceptionally long run in my chart. It debuted at its #2 peak, blocked by Mike Perry, The Vamps and Sabrina Carpenter's Hands in a week where the entire top 5 was full of new tracks. I was sceptical of Swish Swish at first, as I've never been all that big on the house kinda sound that Swish Swish takes inspiration from, but Katy's spark really brings it to life. Nicki's rap is my favourite part though, she's on top form with plenty of quotable lyrics. Shame the video wasn't any better, it's one of the worst of the year oop.

17 Little Mix - Touch | 25-1-2-5-6-5-6-7-12-15-17-23-30-34-X (14 weeks)

Securing their highest EOY position to date, Little Mix's Touch appears for a second year in a row. Touch became their second #1 in the final week of eligibility for the 2016 countdown, meaning most of its run took place in charts that count towards my 2017 EOY and therefore I felt it sensible to include it this year too. Touch is quite easily my favourite Little Mix track, and it was an instant smash to my ears. I was taken by both the album version and the delicate acoustic rendition - quite amazing how one song can make you want to dance and cry, eh? I was delighted to see Touch blow up so quickly following their X Factor performance, it was so well deserved because it really is a brilliant pop track, and I think they'll have a hard time topping this in the next era but hey, I have high hopes.

The last three are all superb! I didn't really rate Manel's song at Eurovision, but it was inoffensive at worst. I still know the hook from only the one full listen back in May, so I'll give him credit for that :kink:

(Swish Swish and Swalla have the same number in Nicki's EOY history)

(Just now listening to Best Behaviour for the second time ever. Such a f***ing tune. Wtf)

Best Behaviour really should have done so much more in the charts :( Much better than So Good for me.

How I hadn't realised The Fooo Conspiracy and FO&O were the same band is beyond me

Brazil & I Don't Mind are my faves of those yet to come so hope they finish nice and high!

Swish Swish and Touch are both great and the best of both artists of recent times. Great examples of dance pop.

16 Tom Jay Williams - Closure | 16-2-3-4-6-10-14-23-32-40-X (10 weeks)

A former member of boyband At Sunset (now disbanded), Tom Jay Williams released his debut solo single Closure in 2017. He'd been on my radar for a while, and I'd actually been following him on Twitter, but I didn't really have any clue on him musically. Nevertheless, Closure got strangely good placings on New Music Friday playlists around the world and I checked it out, simply out of curiosity. I was instantly impressed by it, even though it's a blatant future bass bandwagon jump, it's still a great track with pretty solid production. Closure peaked at #2 in its first full week, just behind Cheat Codes' No Promises. Unfortunate for Tom, as No Promises had leaked a week early - otherwise he'd have secured an easy #1! Closure is the second highest of my BJSC entries this year, leaving Nemo Schiffman as the highest.

15 Declan McKenna - Brazil | 20-21-24-28-32-7-1-2-3-5-10-15-20-30-37-X (15 weeks)

Every now and then, a random relatively old track will top my singles chart. This year, it was the turn of Declan McKenna's Brazil, climbing to #1 in its seventh week in my chart, for no real reason beyond it randomly growing on me. I suppose it's not so silly when you consider that the album was relatively new at that point, and I hadn't heard it until summer 2017 so the fact it came out in 2014 originally isn't really relevant. It became Declan's first #1 in my chart, and the only one so far. Brazil talks about corruption within football, which is a topic I naturally know nothing about but the lyrics Declan uses mean it's an engaging and thought-provoking song nevertheless, particularly for someone so youthful. I find the song quite relaxing too, it was my go-to song during my first few weeks of work when I was a little bit nervous (hence its climb to the top 10).

14 Camila Cabello feat. Young Thug - Havana | 13-16-21-17-10-11-12-14-5-6-11-10-2-4-3-5-… (16+ weeks)

On its way to becoming one of the biggest songs in my chart's history to never make #1, Camila Cabello's Havana has actually recently become the longest running 2017 hit. As of the cut-off point at the end of November, Havana was on 16 consecutive weeks in the chart - right now it's increased to 25 weeks and has re-entered my top 20 once again. Havana really defines slow-burner. It debuted at #13, just two places above OMG, when both songs were released as promo singles when I was on holiday in August. It made my top 10 in its fifth week, only at #10, before dropping down. It finally peaked at #2 in its third stint in my top 10, behind Rita Ora's Anywhere (annoying for Havana but Anywhere remains the bigger hit so it wasn't unjust!). I remember Havana took a few listens for me to enjoy it, put off initially by Young Thug's mumbling mess of a rap. The song as a whole continued to grow on me and despite understanding about 5 words he says, I've grown to enjoy the Young Thug part too. It's crazy how big this song became, as I didn't expect it, but I'm pleased as it stands out in a positive way amongst most chart music and I always believed Camila had the potential to be huge as a soloist. I'm confident she'll be making a big impact on next year's EOY, with her album Camila making it three week at #1 in my album chart, and counting!

13 Anton Hagman - Kiss You Goodbye | 2-2-3-6-9-12-15-22-24-29-31-40-X (12 weeks)

The first of two Melodifestivalen entries in my top 20, Anton Hagman's debut hit Kiss You Goodbye was also a very unlucky #2 hit. It got blocked by fellow MFest track Gotta Thing About You by FO&O for both its weeks at #2, and that's still to come! Nevertheless, Kiss You Goodbye was a huge hit for me at the start of the year, and it helps that it's quite obviously inspired by Shawn Mendes. You'd be forgiven for thinking Kiss You Goodbye sounds a lot like Stitches, but that's no bad thing in my opinion as Stitches was my #2 song of 2016. Anton managed a pretty successful follow-up too, as Somebody to Love peaked at #3 and only just missed my EOY top 50! I'm intrigued to hear what he does next - I'm hoping he doesn't fizzle out. Even an MFest return in the future would be great!

12 Martin Garrix & Troye Sivan - There For You | 20-1-2-2-4-5-9-11-14-18-23-24-30-38-39-X (15 weeks)

The first of two Garrix songs in my top 12, There For You was also the second #1 single for the Dutch DJ in my chart. Having secured his first hit in 2013 with Animals (it overlapped into 2014 so it appeared in both EOY charts as you can see below), Garrix has been mostly quiet since then in my own chart, until Scared to Be Lonely returned him to #1 (more on that later). There For You followed, and it's safe to say my anticipation was high. Not only was Garrix back on form, but he'd teamed up with Troye Sivan, ie. the artist who released the best album of the decade. There For You was Troye's first new material since Blue Neighbourhood, so I was naturally very excited from the moment it was rumoured. While the track doesn't compare to Troye's album for most, I absolutely love it and think it'd actually slot in quite nicely amongst Blue Neighbourhood! I was so pleased when this crept into the top 40, giving Troye his first top 40 hit, but it was infuriating watching Radio 1 ignore such a great track.

11 Robin Schulz, David Guetta & Cheat Codes - Shed a Light | 38-1-1-3-4-5-8-13-16-15-19-23-26-29-33-X (15 weeks)

The first #1 of the eligibility period, Shed a Light saw three big names within the world of dance come together for the first time. Robin Schulz led the way, as Shed a Light became the lead single from his new album. David Guetta and Cheat Codes are both involved too, with the latter's Trevor Dahl providing vocals. I was very interested in this from the moment it was announced, for a range of reasons. I'd enjoyed the last hit from Schulz (Sugar was a definite slow burner hit for me!), Guetta is generally decent and Cheat Codes had only recently had a massive #1 smash in my chart with Let Me Hold You (Turn Me On). Shed a Light followed in its footsteps and made it to #1, enjoying 2 weeks at the top and becoming the first #1 hits for both Schulz and Guetta. It's also only the second highest Cheat Codes song here, with No Promises now guaranteed a top 10 EOY spot! Shed a Light succeeds in being anthemic, and while I quite enjoy the tropical or future bass influenced dance right now, it's nice to hear something that has a club-ready chorus and drop. I wish it was a bigger hit than it was but nevertheless it was good to see it notch up a couple of months in the top 40!

1 Harry Styles

To the surprise of nobody, Harry Styles has ended 2017 as my #1 artist of the year. The former One Direction member was always my favourite in the group, for both musical and aesthetic reasons. The songs in which he took lead vocals were often the best 1D songs, in particular when it came to their ballads. It made sense that Harry's solo material was high up my anticipation list, but it speaks volumes that his debut single was, without exaggeration, my most anticipated release in a long long time.

I was so excited when Harry officially confirmed his single Sign of the Times, but I was also nervous. I'd heard all kinds of reports about how it would sound, and I'll go into much more detail later on when its position is revealed in the songs countdown, but my worries were pointless in the end, as I first listened to Sign of the Times via its radio premiere and was blown away by how much of an audio spectacle it really is. It's the hype that surrounded SOTT's release that contributes majorly to Harry's position here - nobody else has matched that level of anticipation and I doubt they will for a while.

Then came the album. Harry's self-titled album had a lot to live up to, and while I'm not sure it matched the quality of its lead single, it still succeeded in many ways. Firstly, it's not really the type of music I listen to on a regular basis. Harry's album is rock influenced in parts, and anybody who knows my taste well knows that rock has very little place in my iTunes library. Harry's voice helped me enjoy songs like Kiwi which are not my thing. Also though, there were songs that are more my thing, notably Two Ghosts and Ever Since New York, which both remain stunning tracks.

I'm seeing Harry live later this year, and I'm so excited as I think it'll be a brilliant show. Plus I'll probably be a wreck during Sign of the Times so maybe I should bring a box of tissues. Harry Styles defined my 2017, and he did so mostly with one song, but will it go all the way to #1 in my top 10 singles? :o

Shook at 'Closure' and 'Brazil' being together in the same section, both are amaze

Havana is brilliant, great that it made #1 in the UK and US she really deserved it.

Quite liked Shed A Light but not enough for it to make my top 40, and There For You was weak by Martin Garrix's standards (also doesn't help that I don't care much for Troye and it sounds like one of his own songs)

10 Martin Garrix & Dua Lipa - Scared to Be Lonely | 1-1-3-7-9-13-17-24-24-30-36-40-X-15-31-X (14 non-consecutive weeks)

Before this song came out, I'd have struggled to fathom it reaching my EOY top 10, but here we are. Martin Garrix followed up his smash hit single In the Name of Love (a measly #40 hit in my chart) with a Dua Lipa collaboration. Dua had been delivering great songs for a while by that point anyway so her name definitely created interest, but I didn't expect the song to hit me as hard as it did. It became the first #1 single for both Garrix and Dua in my chart, and remained there for 2 weeks, being one of the select few multi-week #1s of 2017.

What helped it hit the spot though? Unlike many similar-sounding songs, Scared to Be Lonely excels on the lyrics front. It's an emotional track, sung with conviction by Dua, and I find it exceptionally relatable, and certainly did at the time too. It summed up something I'd been feeling for a while so beautifully and hit me right in the heart. I fell in love with it all over again after seeing Dua live in November too, and it catapulted the song back up to #15 in my chart. I had a little moment when hearing it live, it just sounded so brilliant. Scared to Be Lonely is definitely my favourite thing from both Garrix and Dua, and without a doubt one of the defining tracks of 2017 for me on more levels than one.

9 Louis Tomlinson feat. Bebe Rexha & Digital Farm Animals - Back to You | 8-1-1-1-3-7-10-14-22-26-29-36-X (12 weeks)

One of only three songs to last 3+ weeks at #1 this year, Louis Tomlinson's Back to You is the first of the trio to drop out. It dominated my top spot for three weeks during the summer, entering at #8 on less than 24 hours of sales and climbing to an easy #1 the week after. It was Louis' second #1, out of two singles at that point, and he regained the lead as the 1D member with the most solo #1 singles. Louis brought along Bebe Rexha this time, who was already enjoying her best year so far in my chart but Back to You became her first #1, and the same for Digital Farm Animals too.

Back to You was an instant smash to my ears. The production is superb and not trend-hopping, and I love how Bebe starts the track. Her vocals shine alongside the production, and whilst I'm a huge 1D fan and obviously I've enjoyed Louis' solo material, I'm always worried about his generally lacking vocals. However, they're not a problem in Back to You and he and Bebe sound brilliant together. The song absolutely defined my holiday to South Wales in August, hogging the #1 spot for both weeks while I was away, and although it tailed off rather quickly, it's a song I still enjoy returning to now.
