2. Stormzy - Gang Signs & Prayer

 

What an album! I actually was slightly disappointed on my first listen but loved it on the 2nd. This album has really proved that he is the king of U.K. urban music. He nails every genre on here, grime, rap, R'n'B, even gospel. I seemed to have different highlights on even listen. Even the Crazy Titch Interlude where Titch is just talking on the phone from prison is quotable. I really couldn't see anything overtaking this to become the year end #1 for the longest time.

1. Kendrick Lamar - Damn. :gold2:

 

I never really understood the hype about Kendrick when Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City was released but this has fully won me over. Not often does an album come out where every single track is a 10/10 but they really are here. There are a very limited number of features on here but they are all used to brilliant effect. U2 being a massive shock, I had no idea what to expect when I heard they were on here. Some of my favourite lyrics of all time come from this album. I can't help but laugh every time I listen to Element and he says "Last LP I tried to lift the black artists, But it's a difference between black artists and wack artists". And if nothing else the story to Duckworth is fascinating. I want to see a film just based of that song.

Comment: The famous threesome come back together and produce one of their weaker efforts. I do like the chorus to this in particular but it tried to be a diss track and a radio single at the same time but it doesn't really do either that well. So I'm not surprised it didn't seem to light the charts up or be received that well.

Comment: A return to form for the John Lewis advert songs. The only previous JL advert song to finish in the EOY top 100 was Tom Odell's Real Love at 99 in 2014. I've always liked Elbow without necessarily listening to much of their music. One Day Like This is a classic. So they were a very welcome choice. I love the thick Manc accent when he says 'Slumbers'.

Comment: There's some great parts to this track. The 24K magic sample is infectious, and much less annoying than the Bruno Mars version. Rihanna steals the show, her verse is by far the highlight. Kendrick's great as ever but this is still one of the weaker songs from the album. I can understand why this was made a single but there was so many I would have picked before this.

Comment: This is one I discovered from the Rap Caviar playlist on Spotify which used to soundtrack my walk to uni every morning. I don't know why but I just love 21's uninterested, monotone flow. Comment: Fifth Harmony are one of the most successful acts in my chart history but Camila was always my favourite so I was very interested to see where they were going to go without her. But this must be one of the most anticlimactic comebacks of all time, I mean look at their history in my chart before this song. It's still catchy but it feels even less creative than Work From Home which is unforgivable. This was the perfect chance for Lauren or Normani to become to new lead of the group but neither of them took it. Thankfully there was some better songs on the album but it wasn't enough to match what Camila's done this year.

Comment: I'm sure like most people I've always preferred Noel's music since Oasis split. But Liam's really overtaken since he's gone solo. I've never known excitement as what the people standing around me at One Love Manchester were when Liam came on stage.

Comment: It was great to see this do so well in the charts. It certainly sounds like nothing else we've heard this year. MNEK is really the stand-out, he sounds absolutely incredible with his verse. Comment: I think I've ranked this is far too low. Last.FM says it's my 15 most played song of the year (although a lot of them does come from the album). It was brilliant to see this reach the top 20 in the UK. This song is so epic, it's non-stop and aggressive. The sample of the Fox News clip criticising him is referenced on a few songs but this is the largest pay-off is.

Comment: For the second year in a row the EuroVision songs have had their runs cut short due a big event in my chart. I watched the contest last year with my friend over Skype and although we had different opinions most of the time this is one of the 2 we agreed were the best. The other may still be to come. The chorus and drop to this is brilliant and sounds like something that could have caught on more if it wasn't from the contest.

Comment: This was such a poor choice of single. I do love this but it's one of the more forgettable songs of the album, I would have chose Bad Decisions as the last single but Greedy or Be Alright would have also been great.

Comment: I was loving this but I got bored of it ultra-quickly. The piano is really fun and the "I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it" part is so catchy. I'm listening to it now and I'm enjoying it again. I wish I hadn't gone off this so rapidly.
